Lessons in Reenacting | Ep. 2 | The Wool Uniform

Every impression needs a base. For the US GI, that base typically comes in the form of the wool uniform. Today's video will discuss the history, the changes made, and how to incorporate it into your impression. I own a wool shirt from ATF that fits perfectly at the neck and arms (as is the basis of their sizing) but is very baggy and loose around the chest and waist. To a degree this is ok for me, but its a good thing to keep in mind. Tailoring your trousers and shirt might be something to consider!

As with the original soldier you need to get the shirt fitted.

i bought my first set of wools a year ago at the age of 15, they barely fit, i now have a set that fits me amazingly

You should do a video on the class a uniform (4 pocket jacket) For dress uniforms and how to assemble them, going over regulation and all of that, it's very important for people who start out in the hobby so they don't wear their insignias upside down lol. (I actually saw a fellow wearing his upside down)

Just want to point out real quick, the Wool was rarely used in the Pacific because wool absorbs and holds water.

Wool was issued in Korea & Vietnam too in the form of the M51 Shirt & Pants OD7. I own a set and wear it all the time. I prefer the M37 mustard wool from WWII.

I think you should have mentioned that the ATF "flannel" shirt is terrbiely wrong and should be avoided.

i just got a wool shirt (original 1943) and it looks amazing but it is pretty uncomfortable on the skin. What should i do?

Hey! Unfortunately that’s just how the uniform will feel on your body as wool is not terribly comfortable. However, with plenty of use you’ll adjust to the feeling and it won’t be a problem!

Thanks for the reply! i'm not the age to start reenacting (so i'm mainly doing airsoft) but i'm a very big fan of your content. funny you said that, after wearing it for a while it got more comfortable. thanks!

Some people find that a little bit of hair conditioner will take away some of the itch. Just don't let your Mom wash it in the machine or dryer. It will likely mess it up. Just DIY with a capful of Woolite Delicates $5 per quart sized bottle. Some use hair shampoo, but regular laundry detergent will ruin wool. Then watch videos about drying wool in a cotton towel and hanging on a suit hanger or drying rack. Wear a cotton undershirt or long sleeves and it'll serve you well for many years. @@radifool6320 Hope that helped. Right now I'm wearing a Marino wool base layer. No itch. Over that is a vintage 100 % wool military surplus mid layer. It's in the 20°s today F, so the vintage Woolrich coat or long overcoat will be the choice. If I do much hiking, I put a thin layer in-between to allow freer movement because the friction of wool uses more energy. Of course you can use a liner sock if you have the heavy rag wool socks, but save up for merino and you'll never look back. What did you think of the link?

Feel free to start saving money and collecting some more basic equipment, but I wouldn't recommend buying any uniform until you're old enough to join a proper reenactment group. It may seem like a loooong way's away, but you'll get there sooner than you think!

Make sure ww2 impressions has your size in stock otherwise you have to wait up to months for the uniform parts.

Here's another small idea by a white belt by the actual buckle and then died the belt in coffee you will come up with the same exact shade as you need it's the cheapest option cuz you can find white ones anywhere

That's very much called farb and I would suggest against that.
