Bought a new Ram 2500 4x4 with a Cummins turbo Diesel in 2006! I put 80,000 miles and most while towing a 2007 5th wheeler! No problems other then a leaking water pump replacement years ago. I do my own repair jobs, changed my transmission fluid last fall and changed air, and fuel filters, thermostat and radiator cap. I will be changing the front and rear differential fluids this spring. I check all fluids, belts, hoses and battery connections on my vehicles frequently! Had help from my son changing the exhaust a year ago. I'm 81 and learned how to maintain and service cars from my Dad by helping him with his cars. Secret to making vehicles last is to check the fluids, do your own maintenance when possible and learn how to inspect repairs you have done by others. Don't be afraid to crack the hood, and the owners manual on your vehicle, and save money, and keep your vehicle running trouble free.

Your ‘04 F150 had one of the most troublesome gas engines Ford put in trucks in recent years. And it did fine. I’m sure the F150 made you pucker with that size trailer but it didn’t cost an extra 20K (BS warranty, uncovered repairs, unrepareable, upside down when traded, etc). I would’ve gone with the 7.3 Godzilla gasser.

Just sub'd onto your channel. I was truly heartbroken watching the cluster truck episode. Used car dealers have no soul. They just say whatever to make a sale. You went from buying the worst possible diesel truck on earth, to the best diesel tow pick up you can buy! And i'm a Ford guy! I have always owned Ford and Dodge. I owned a 2015 Ram 3500 single crew cab Laramie. What an amazing tow vehicle. The torque and engine brake on that truck were outstanding! You made a great choice with the ram. On the tranny, i know personally a 2011 ram 3500 with the stock 68RFE trans that has been completely abused and never serviced for over 350k miles. It just got rebuilt at 365k for the first time. Also, i just have to say what an amazing and beautiful family you have!! Loved seeing your kids playing in the background. What a great platform to make personal youtube videos...family togetherness! The problem is idle time on a diesel. The emission will go bad within 3 years if the vehicle sits at long idle time.

Bingo. One of the most important things to look at on a newer diesel truck would be engine hours. High engine hours relative to mileage is a reason to run away.
@thegeneral74844 жыл бұрын
Its not a idle issue. Its a Egr, Def issue. So a leaking egr is from idle NO. The exhaust recirculating throughout the turbo, and engine from idle NO. The Def fluild getting clogged from idle NO. The camper your towing is a beast but the 2500 with the diesel should do fine. Towing that rig with with an F150, well that was on edge. Personally, I could do without all the bells and whistles and go with the Bighorn 3500 with the Cummings and Aisin tranny. Or if it's a tight budget, the power train 3500 Tradesman. Tunes, especially on powerstrokes will not hide issues. They will make them more pronounced and damage the diesel if it wasn't built for the tune. Likely what happened was the previous owner put a heavier tune on that 6.4 without fortifying the engine for the tune. However, I watched your video and the first time it was in the shop for the 11,000 they should have found the tune and the issues. I kind of feel like they got you a bit on that repair.

According to the warranty at 70000 you're supposed to do a transmission check by a certified ASE mechanic. Well I had no idea that a year later when the transmission blew they wouldn't cover it because I didn't get that transmission check I explain to them I have bought the truck with 69000. They said sorry we're not going to cover it. Live and learn extended warranty suck ass

A transmission check at 70,000 miles, first time i heard that on transmissions, i wonder if other trucks are like this, i know about keeping up with changing the transmission fluid There are different things you need to do n know as new vehicles come out, i will have to study the papers on what i need to do when i buy a new truck Extended warranties are worth it at times n not at other times, n some will try to rip you off n not pay for it if they can N they do got many hidden things at times that help them not cover damage that is done

Hi John - I sure hope you can start enjoying the RV Life style as it was meant to be, Also I like to say the warranty company needs to be less picky on what parts are covered for engines, ALL parts on the engine if stock are covered - dosnt matter what seal - what gasket or what part broke - if it is stock that it came built from the factory then the warranty company cant nit pick or you need to change warranty company's or take them to court - it's really a shame you lost almost 15000+ on the repairs - which I kinda wondered why not go to a gas engine where less problems of the 250/350/ 2010 Ford F series - I have a 2008 F250 gas super duty and the only thing that I had to get up to speed was the issues of the 5.4 3valve . The only advice I can offer you on the dodge you have now is don't idle for long periods of time as there was an issue with the Hemi's gas engine of the roller followers starve for oil due to the engine design- now I don't know of the diesel version but the hemi gas engine had a bad block design where the cam and the roller followers had very poor lubrication to the point where the lobes on the cam flattened - I recommend to get yourself up to speed and read up about this - research on hemi cam issues and see if it also affects the diesel version too. - Safe travels

From a pulling standpoint diesels are very nice to have. Unfortunately with all the emissions put on the them and your experiences I am thinking about going gas. @@NoOrdinaryPath sorry, I should have explained. Most aftermarket warranties on diesels won't cover like you expect a warranty on a gas due to the cost. As you experienced they will find ways to protect themselves from paying an $11,0000 repair bill. Blue book don’t always add what the optional the truck had and additional. I don’t go over what NADA and KBB prices because they don’t listed what modifications. Like you add 8 inch lift and 22” rims. Lift cost ranges $1,000-4,000. 22” rims range $900-2,000 for a set. Mostly dealership give the offers that is stock prices. If the truck has tuner and small modifications, cost you around $2,000. Dealership would not add it. Trying to rob you off over the modifications. Dealership knew the truck has it. After trade in, they will raised the price that listed of modifications. Best is sell truck yourself. If under lien, good luck with it. Mine is 2005 Ford F-150 crewcab 4wd with lifted and locked cam phasers. Has no problems for 4 years since major work with broken spark plugs and replacement head and timing chains and phasers. Now pulling 2019 rv gross weight 4k and haven’t gotten problems yet. If truck has tuner, best take to diesel performance shop. Dealership don’t do any modifications works because they are factory trained technician. I’m former automotive service technician for dodge. Have seen what training centers has done. None of training for modifications.

Ford makes a wonderful truck. Unfortunately those 6.4's are randomly unreliable.... I mean they fail, and fail in so many different ways. I would literally prefer the 6.0 not even bulletproofed over the 6.4. 6.7 is amazing and reliable. However, that Ram will serve you well. So yeah, used car dealers typically buy from auction. The cars at auction are mostly the stuff the new car dealers don't want or trust. Also, invest in a $40-60 scan tool. Look for all the readiness checks in the pcm to be complete. If they're not it's a good sign that the dealer cleared the codes so you don't see the check engine light on, i.e: they're hiding something.

The story the dealer told about the "program" being the cause of the issues is BUNK! The dealerships have advanced computer readers that can tell right away if the factory computer has been altered including its programming. They just lied so they wouldn't have to stand behind their work.

carfax will be more, on average, accurate than autocheck.. you can look at miles and how the miles on carfax match up to verify past stuff.. a quick way to check for past damage in fenders is look for vin tags.. or difference of paint on bolts. sometime if removed and replace the paint will be banged up. if you have a diesel truck you might not want to be filled up with gas. (12 min or so mark comments.) in the great debate the new, 2017 and up ford, GMC-chev, Ram are about the same.. This is the quality "order" for Ford diesels. 7.3 Navistar = best engine ever. 6.0 Turbo Navistar = has known issues with cooling (water and oil) but once resolved they have a very strong lower end. 6.7 Turbo = expensive to fix and over powered with reliance on the turbos. 6.4 Ford Engine = the most prone to major lower engine failure. Extended warranties are a joke. Put your money in the bank and fix your truck as needed. Never skimp on oil and coolant changes. Good luck!

My 6.0 has 150,000 on it and the gaskets are still original. The head bolts are on this winter's maintenance list. If a paid for truck lasts 15 years, you can consider that work as maintenance. If you "performance tuned it" then you caused the issue. I've spent more money on tires......lol

NOTHING can make a 6.4L a "solid motor" Understand this...NOTHING!!!
@markbremmer86424 жыл бұрын
There is one thing that can make the the 6.4 a solid engine: Concrete. Then you never need to worry about it going bad, because it is no longer there🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. That is to replace it with something that is of better design, be it another Ford, without the 6.4, GM, or Ram. The 6.0 can be made reliable but not the 6.4 u less it is used as a boat anchor.

My advise:Buy new! You would have saved yourself and your family thousands! Your towing a trailer that you live in! Sorry but cheaping out cost y’all! Stop punishing yourself and buy what’s needed to pull and give you piece of mind! My two pennies.

The Ford 6.4L is never, and can never be described as a "solid motor". It is 100% junk. Tuned, deleted, whatever. Still junk. No one should buy one of those trucks.
@beinggrownupsux80404 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. Deleting it will only allow it to shit the bed a few months later than it would have had it remained emissions intact.

Dodge truck components are junk, good motor (Cummins), junk transmission... Word of advice... Do not get sold on a "ATS trans", when you get to trans replacement... On your new dodge.
@CGCampUT4 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with the trans on the Rams. My old man's 2014 ram has 145k miles on it, good friend of mine has 130k and few people I know on the cumminsforum has over 500k on a 2015 and 2013

The best thing to do when buying a used truck...buy a new one..it might cost a lot more up front...but the savings on repairs will more than match the perches price...most new trucks have a 5 year warranty so that's 5 years of not having to find the money for repairs!!.😎❤🇺🇲
