Several years ago, I was talking to my friend, Tatyana Titova, who had just run The Comrades in South Africa for the first time. I asked her how she did in this 90 km race. She said she finished 18th in a daze. That was 18th for everyone in the race, men and women. I asked her how she felt about that. She said it was all right, but the next time she ran it, she "would be ready." She's the sweetest, toughest runner I've ever known.

I agree with Coach Holly 3:45. I don't like the gels or sugared fluids, and prefer to go with water and solid food (chips, cookies, potatoes, fruit and pasta) for races with aid stations.

Biggest mistakes I made is not getting in big distance “ time on legs”. I think one key might be incorporating hiking with a lot of elevation gain. Say 10 to 15hrs on the legs. Really still trying to find the sweet spot of Marathon vs Ultra maybe time on legs?

I used to be in the field and on my feet for long periods of time while in the military. Changing socks after 6 hours was crucial to keeping feet from blistering and just feeling horrible.
@galleyman5 жыл бұрын
Darin Pirkey well they ran a 55k, they weren’t in the military.

@@galleyman my point is that they were on their feet for a long time. Changing out socks even half way through can help prevent blistering. When I do my ultra I plan on changing a few times.

50k! Awesome job ladies. A marathon scares me. Doing the Philadelphia Broad Street run in October. That’s a 10 mile race. I’ll consider a half marathon depending on how that goes. Love the views of San Francisco in the background.

Very cool you were in Golden. I have been there many times. I just did my second trail race ever 42km with 5300ft vertical earlier this month. They’re so cool to do and recovery is faster than the pounding of a traditional road marathon. The lows are huge too. You gals are so informative. (Prediction......Morgan will do a longer race some day). Cheers to you two and of course Nate

Love this channel. Love San Francisco! Good video, good advice. Trying to build up my training for longer runs at the moment but keep getting injured :-(. Pulled a calf muscle on Tuesday doing intervals. Very frustrating. BUT I've entered a 10K race tonight for January because this video motivated me!

12:57 "just kind of cruise it" ok, that's like the sweet spot of HIGH Performance, it's called FLOW, and you can get there, into the 'zone' after a small rest after some great effort in something you really like; drink beetroot juice, it helps getting FLOW

I have my first 50k in December. Pretty flat but coastal and parts on the beach. Can't wait, thanks for the tips 👍
@toppdesignstt5 жыл бұрын
I was on vacation in Florida recently and did some runs on the beach, 6 , 10 and a 14 miler. Just because is flat doesn't mean anything. Running in the sand is extremely taxing unless it's part of your regular routine. I used muscles I never knew existed and it's mentally challenging in that it seems to drag on forever with no changes in sceneries, never mind no hiding from the sun etc. Best of luck to you!
@ladylouroll25 жыл бұрын
@@toppdesignstt Yeah ive done some running on sand and actually rather enjoy it even had some in one of my marathons (pretty steep sand dune type paths) but agree its hard on the legs. These beach stints are more pebbles/silty muddy bits. As far as the sun goes its days before christmas and im from the UK so ill be more worried about freezing haha! I dont intend to do it fast just need to get to 1/2 way before 4 hours to beat the tide but we shall see!

Ive only ran marathon distances x2. At the start of my training I started getting blisters. I read that 2 pairs of socks stops the friction as does putting vaseline on your feet. So I did that and have never gotten a blister since. Id like to try an Ultramarathon distance. On a marathon they say the last 5miles or so are the worst. So Im wondering if you keep running for an ultra do you outrun that ?? I havent found the end of my 2marathon runs too bad but it obviously did get tougher. On my second marathon at around the 35k mark I was thinking I might go for 50k on this one but then the last 3/4k went by so slowly in my mind(not my runtime) that I was just happy to finish the marathon. Can you train yourself past that ?? I was thinking if I got a few marathon distances(or close) under my belt in quick succession(3/4wks) that perhaps my body would get used to that distance so an ultramarathon wouldnt be a huge step forward.

just curious, why is Holly bulky? is she joining some body-building or strongman something? most long-distance runners I see are lean so they dont have to carry unnecessary weight.
@rowanmulvey86325 жыл бұрын
I think that any body who runs should know that the reasons, the motivations, the choices are unique to each and every runner. If Holly chooses to focus on being a well developed all around athlete that is her choice and it is NOBODY'S business to judge her for it.
@scout5285 жыл бұрын
@@rowanmulvey8632 well yeah but I have to ask why or in your whiteknighting opinion 'judge her'. shes a running coach on a running channel with the topic about ultramarathon not an offseason bodybuilder or mma coach.

Hey there! Holly here. I’ve found a balance between ultra running and strength training that works for me right now. Everyone’s body is different and it’s important they tailor their training and overall goals to that. I’ve found my strength training to very much support my getting through multiple 50 mile runs injury-free. It also helps vary my training throughout the week. Thanks for your comment
