You should have a banana circle. Dig a hole and put the Banana's on opposite ends of the hole, fill the hole with mulch and cuttings and loose soil. The banana's will grow their suckers around the circle. As you trim the leaves, put them in the middles, continue to fill the hole with cuttings from your weeding and pruning, they will create nourishment for the banana's and create a grove. Banana's grow from the roots and send babies out. Once they are finished fruiting, they are finished and can be cut down. There should already be replacement trees growing. I cut down the old tree and put it in the circle to feed the new growths

Hon, unless you plan to move your trees in a year or two , they seem to be to close together. I may be incorrect, I often am lol , but you have to account for each trees root system plus the width of each canopy. I walked out of the room to let my puppies outside so I probably missed where you said how much room each will need. You both are such hard workers, your homestead is looking amazing❤❤. And the added ability to help against wildfires last weeks video is wonderful and I’m sure gives you added piece of mind🥰

Blueberries like very acidic soil. Other berry bushes need lots of room as they will spread far for sure.

Love that you are gardening. From the video it looked your little trees and bushes are too close to each other and the wall. Did your spacing account for their size when mature? Also, when they mature, their leaves will cast shade on other plants/bushes/trees. Then there is harvesting, you need room to safely stand, walk around and reach into trees with grabbing tool. Hope this helps.

Brittany it’s great to see you doing some practical tasks rather than just Drew all the time , it suits you. I am really looking forward to seeing you pointing the walls in the water mill and many other tasks in the future. Drew does a great job, but it’s fantastic to be seeing you working together. I am sure your garden will be very productive in the future if you nurture it and keep on top of the weeds. ❤️🐈❤️

I hope you won't mind me suggesting to move your raspberry blackberry bushes and plant them along your driveway against one of the walls. The root system is aggressive and will speed waaaay to much. It will crowd out other plants you have in that area. By year 3 it will be everywhere. It was one of my biggest mistakes along with mint. I will only do them in pots in the future. When planting potted plants always plant the plant at the depth of the top of the soil level that it was in the pot. Not planting the root ball lower or you can possibility rot the stem killing the tree or bush. Also crushing egg shells into a fine powder and mixing it in the soil when planting is great for them and adding it in a circle around it in spring will make it happy. Anyway that's just a bit of help, really getting a how to grow fruit will be you best idea. Or watch many gardening videos like me and then trial and error what you learned. Happy planting!!😊❤

70 year old Farm kid here. We started seedlings with seeds from last years tomatoes. When it was time to plant, we striped 2/3 rds of the lower leaves off and planted the roots plus 2/3 rds of the tomato plant. We also would pinch the top of the plant of if it was getting spiky. I still grow tomatoes this way and have more than I can use.

You can plant 4 female banana trees & 1 male tree. Plant many bc you can't gender them until they bloom. The female trees flower against the stem & the males have a green extention with the flower at the end. If you keep breaking off the heads, the arms that sprout forth will give you more fruit. The main stem also grows stronger. Don't allow too many arms bc they get top heavy & the tree can topple over easily. Thin out the fruit for the same reason. Pampino variety is the best. By taking off the crown it keeps the tree lower & if you plant them next to a terrace wall you can pick them from the higher terrace without a ladder. Passion Fruit (Grenadilla) needs a trellis or fence. It only bears fruit the 2nd year. If you can find a Guavadilla, it yields fruit immediately. Once you have them growing, I will let you have a famous recipe for either a shooter or a divine sundowner. You'll be the talk of the town!! 😅😅😅

In Australia we call the green vegetable Choko, it's a bit bland on its own but it is very good for you, it's a good filler for any dish, just use your favourite flavours with it and it is a nutritious way to bulk out your food. I've heard people blend it with apples cut the same way in apple pies to make the apples go further.

You can appreciate what our ancestors did to survive. My father grew up in a farm like environment, but not the children. We were all born in Brooklyn, NY. My dad always planted vegetables in the house. He placed pots byvthe windows and grew certain herbs. I don't have a green thumb but one of my younger sisters does. I love home grown fruits and vegetables. They taste amazing.

In Australia the Chayote Squash is called a "Choko", which is the Cantonese name for the vegetable. If you peel the skin and boil it, then the flavor is mild and very full of water. The longer you let the Chayote grow on the vine, the harder it gets and requires cooking. If you pick it early, then it can be eaten raw like a cucumber.

loving the plants! Keep in mind with tomatoes, you want to keep the soil off the leaves, even when watering. be careful not to splash dirty water on them as it can contribute to tomato blight. i usually even take the bottom leaves off the plant so they dont droop down.

By the way although the leaves look similar, you'll find they aren't clover, they are Oxalis 👍 Also just a little tip, You'll find that you are planting many of your plants and trees too close together. The Bananas will grow in clumps and spread anyway but for example the avocado will become an enormous tree. Also, your Kiwifruit are vigorous climbers and can reach lengths of up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) or more. These vines need strong support structures, such as trellises or pergolas, to grow properly and bear fruit. The vines produce large, heart-shaped leaves and can create a lush, green canopy when fully grown. Make sure to provide plenty of space and a sturdy support system to accommodate their growth. They also require regular pruning to manage their size and encourage fruit production. Also advise mulching quite heavily around the plants in your climate to keep the roots cool and moist as they grow, it will really reduce the stress on them as they try to take hold. I'd also try and start a much bigger compost as adding a good layer of compost around the plants and trees under the mulch will help significantly. All will appreciate that but particularly your bananas will need it at least annually for good strong healthy growth as they are heavy feeders and fast growers:) Great to see you lovies exercising those green thumbs and don't be afraid to do a little search about what your plants prefer before planting them there are so many great resources online :) Aproveite!!!!

Clover is in the legume family and fixes nitrogen so they can be good around your trees. Unless that Biochar was “charged” by mixing with compost or nutrient liquid mix for about 30 days it can temporarily zap the nutrient uptake as they bind to the charcoal. Might have to do some watering with compost tea if that is the case. Several trees are too close as others have stated. Avocado tree spacing is 15 ft if you are actively pruning and up to 30 feet. They also can get quite tall so they could end up shading the banana trees depending on sun direction.

Guys when planting pay attention to the size of the tree's when fully grown. That Walnut Tree grows as big as an Oak Tree. To save yourself digging it up and replanting it, I advise you to rethink the space it's going to need when it's five or ten years in the ground. Berries are ok, they die back and grow each year and trees are very different. Its important to let them have their own space. Think about the shadows from the matue tree's falling on your fruit bushes that needs sunlight to ripen, think about the root structure of the larger trees like walnuts, they will move stone walls etc and the roots can impact on the fruit trees too. 🎉❤

FYI, the one banana tree planted will multiply and will spread. It’s best to plant them in a big open area. I bought a dwarf banana tree planted it beautiful harvest bananas taste yummy but I had to dig it all up because it kept spreading next to my house and next to the fence on the other side. I had a very small backyard area. It’s too sad but lucky you folks have a lot of area to grow bananas. Good luck be sure to move it or you’re gonna have to move your pool.

Bananas grow better nearest to water - when I ground pools swear, the banana tree loves that so on a lower terrace near your running creek would be ideal and know that when the banana blossom forms, cut off the big purple flower and brew it into a tea (very high in iron) and the whole tree will die and fertilize the ground as more trees sprout up from your root base!

Or around the new container pool 😃 Wow, I had never heard of that avocado trick! So cool! I think you’re supposed to plant trees with the top of the root’s just below the surface. If they come from a nursery in a pot, plant them so the top of the pot is level with the ground, and twice the width of the pot. Am I making sense 🤷🏻‍♀️? Hi guy's, I'm sooo excited to see you planting, it's so important to get your tree's established. With the Cape Gooseberry (Andy plant, tomatoe) be warned, the roots are huge and really needs to be moved away from the Kiwi... my Gooseberry grew 6 metres wide, round and 3-4 metres high and will drink a lot and take the water from other plants, the flowers are amazing too. They are strong plant's, cut them back hard once after first fruit but here in Australia mine fruited all year round and got bigger each year.

We don’t hot compost, we built a compost bin using pallets, then toss all of fresh food scraps, pulled garden plants, leaves, grass clippings, egg shells etc in it & let it sit. By Spring, it’s compost. We add it to our beds, then I plant pumpkins or butternut squash in the bottom of the pit. They do amazingly bc the bottom is soil from leaving it year after year. Yes, Comfrey will make a great ground cover for the tree, retaining moisture & fixing nitrogen. Beans, even green beans grow nodules on their roots that fix nitrogen to the soil. So, it’s good to rotate beans with tomatoes. Activated charcoal has been used for raising the acidity, drainage & retaining moisture for 1000s of years.

Overview of your what we call them here in Australia, chokos. My mother grew them but in my opinion had no taste much to them at all. She would boil them I think then put them under the grill with a dap of butter, chopped onions and bacon and that’s what gave them flavour good enough to eat. Apparently they have good nutritional value. Enjoy! Chayote or Sicyos edulis, also known as christophine, mirliton and choko, is an edible plant belonging to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. This fruit was first cultivated in Mesoamerica between southern Mexico and Honduras, with the most genetic diversity available in both Mexico and Guatemala

When planting trees it is important to keep in mind the size of the tree when mature. This will help with working out spacing. Also permaculture design principles planting the higher need and usage closer say herbs and veg and lower need and usage further, for example, nut trees which could go on your new terraces. For gardening youtube channels like "nearby veggies," Charles Dowding, or Hugh Richards could give you plenty of hints and tricks.

Brittany is so cute using the blower! I got a blower/vac, but it is corded and a little heavy for this 76 year old lady to use. I is tiring, but it is faster than sweeping, racking and picking up the leaves!

Hi Guys, Congratulations on an amazing 2024. So much achieved. If I could offer a few ideas plant groundcovers on the banks that are slipping. Try juniper or a plant called catmint it has so many uses. The fig next to the mill is ready for taking cuttings. It would help the tree and give you so many new trees. Buy lots of cork trees and find somewhere to start a grove and ask everyone who has worked on the Mill to plant one. As they are a protected species they would be there forever. Wishing you both, your families, fur babies,' builders and viewers a wonderful Xmas and you both a safe, productive and magical 2025. Subscribed and liking from Sydney Australia

Living in Hawaii I got told all the time that bananas are a plant not a tree. Plus once the give you the fruit you have to cut it down cuz it dies. But a new plant or a few new ones will sprout up out of the routs. So plant them in an area away from others.

Chayote squash can be used as a cooked apple replacement. Diced, cooked with sweetner and a little lemon juice. Then add apple pie spice. We eat low carb and you would never know it isn't apple. Apple crisp, apple waffle, empanadas.....😋

Because you all have so much on your plate here is a small heads up about something that might be important. In the sides those new terraces, I see a lot of new eucalyptus trees coming back to haunt you. This is the best time of year to replace them with trees that don’t use so much water and are more fire resistant, like Iberian oaks, holm oaks, cypresses, carob trees, cork oaks, etc. If you don’t do this now, you will have to wait for next year. Like someone said, when is the best time to plant a tree? Last year.😊

Great job on the planting. Just an FYI, comfrey can overtake an area quite rapidly. Your bananas are planted exactly where ours are, next to the pool. We had to cut down our walnut tree, it was at least 40 ft and unfortunately took over our garden (we didnt plant it, previous owners did and didnt account for it size).

My mom was from Mexico. She used to grow chayote in our garden. As a child I was adverse to greens so never really tried it. But I do know she use to put it in her soups like a potato. I’m sure that’s how she snuck them into our diet. 😊 Your video reminded me I should try them again as an adult. I’m not as adverse to greens now. 😉

It's great to see you tree planting as boy do we need more trees but tbh they look a bit too close together unless they are dwarf varieties, of course ... also, it's good not to add fresh compost so the trees send their roots out to look for nutrients, which makes them stronger roots.. and the winter period is always the best time to plant or transplant trees as they tend to be more dormant so get less stressed ...but water them well for the first week or so 😊

Don't forget the perennial veggie's like artichoke bed, asparagus bed. Plant once and enjoy forever. Like trees and berry bushes they take a couple of yrs to start producing.

New Orleans Stuffed Mirlitons. Banana’s are very invasive. I found the best way to control them to be a round point shovel to cut back the roots.

Guys kiwi are trees. This means that as a tree you need to provide each one the space to grow roots without tangling to the other and have space for the leafage to spread. I mean that you planted them too close. They at least a couple of meters between them.
