it works as both. by mashing you add many little bits to your "progress", but by letting it charge you add bigger chunks. mashing is more effective only when the opponent misses their last input (which can happen as there's no timer displaying how much time you have left in the clash)

While I very much enjoyed the game. It still needs alot more done to make it GOTY material. Mostly because there's actually not alot to do in the game besides story mode and online mod. Compared to bt3, that had alot more to do, such as a longer story mode with tons of mid fight events, 2 very cool side modes, and a much better difficulty curve. Not to say sparking zero is bad, but it could've done a lot of things better.
