Of all the many versions of "Ruby" there has never been one to compare with this, Mel's own version with just his acoustic guitar.... The most haunting song possibly ever written, especially knowing the fact it was based on a true story that Mel had read in the papers. I could loop this and run it all day and never get tired of it.

I know that I am replying to a very old comment, but it is with a touch of irony (because he was on the show), that I must say my favorite version has always been the one recorded by Faron Young (Jerry Lee Lewis also did a great one).

Porter was real. A country plowboy who made it big down in Nashville. I saw his show in person six times. He was a darn good guitar player and his custom made guitars had an incredible tone. He surrounded himself with some of the finest muscians in Nashville. He was one of, if not the first, country star to have his own show. He was the first country star to sell ten thousand seats on a regular basis. He was humble and appreciative. As my grandpap said one time... If you gave Porter and Dolly a mule and a plow, both woulda knowed which end to hook it to! 😆

I love how they left in whenever Porter had a brain fart (briefly forgetting lyrics) and how Porter didn't take himself too seriously. BTW, as of early 2020, I live in West Plains, MO, where Porter (and Speck, BTW) grew up. Porter has a street named after him here, too -- Porter Wagoner Boulevard.

After watching this video, I know now what made these entertainers so special. It's not just the apparent raw talent that they possess, but they all have their own individual sound. When you hear Porter, you know it's Porter. When you hear Mel, you know it's Mel and so on. Today's acts sound so much alike that I can't tell one from the other. Thank God I grew up hearing these people's voices around my house. I truly feel fortunate that I was exposed to such good music.

Hi Paula.. Just read your post.. About 30 years ago there was a family driving around out here in the country where I live ( Oklahoma) claiming to be Wagoners. They were looking for a old house that they said Porter lived in when he was a little kid.. I always thought that little red sign that said that said Porter Wagoner lived here was a joke.. I guess it was true?

@@jamesmitchell4160 Thx Oh, where did you find such specific info? There have been books written by several producers about Hee Haw. But good that Porter with Dolly appeared on the show. Just about every other Nashville star(s) appeared one time or other. The question now is where are all the taped 600 shows being stored? Suspect that Gaylord Enterprises (Opry) bought them around 1985. Interesting.

Virtually ALL the Porter Wagoner Shows were great - just totally natural pickin', singin' an' jokin'. Porter was way cool back then. Mel Tillis w/ "Ruby" - a true example of a real-deal "Singer-Songwriter"...just like he wrote an demo'd it. And what about "Unmitigated Gall"...now there's a number which Faron delivers as he also does on "I Just Came to Get My Baby Out of Here". The whole Wagonmaster gang - great players/singers. Man oh man - Mac Magaha and Red Hayes twin fiddlin' plus wonderful of Porter to sing (and acknowledge) Red's "Satisfied Mind" with Don Warden and George McCormick joining for the trio. Finally...can' t forget Dolly (that's for sure!) and her clever "I'll Oilwells Love You" song.
