You know what -I saw this and while I never really liked, or thought I liked, Hello Dolly, and really only went to see her, I LOVED it. She was fantastic, but this production was stellar even without her, and she is right - it really did lift my spirits. I've seen a ton of musicals on Broadway and this one of my favorite productions. Who knew?!! Go see it if you can - I'sure Bernadette Peters is good too, but the show is wonderful.

A comment was made about 'clearly you haven't seen the other nominated performances....' Clearly, I prefer to be entertained and not depressed by the 'entertainment' of a show as overinflated as some of the other shows were (I see you Miss Saigoon). Who put the most butts in the seats, though, huh? Audiences PAY to see Midler, and stay for the rest of the show! True, actorwise, she didn't give a gut-wrenching, death defying performance, but she wasn't supposed to! She was memorable, and carried the show on her shoulders. These lovely younger women, if as tenacious as Midler, will have more opportunities coming up. And saw 3 out of the 5 performances, btw. ALL deserve recognition.

At the 52nd Academy Awards, Bette Midler was nominated for best actress for The Rose (she didn't win). But her ad libs were the funniest thing going. I always felt that she should have been chosen to host some awards show after all of these years. She was that quick on her feet. I've changed my mind. Last night, she was just plain rude and self involved. At the end of the ceremony, I loved what Kevin Spacey said about her, under the guise of President Underwood). She needed to stop talking.

Really? In your life, or for that manner, almost anyone's life, did you ever get an award? She is, as always, fun to watch. And, what you don't realise is, she worked her ass off for most of her life. Maybe her humility button was turned off because she is always aware that opportunities don't always come again. As Streisand said: Don't rain on (her) parade.

These shows are rude.They have time for all the commercials,but not to let the artists thank the very people without whom they wouldnt be standing there.
@flickering-ghostlight7 жыл бұрын
@Noelia Jaime it won't let me reply specifically to you lol ok but being rude and telling the orchestra to "shut that crap off", then talking after they're done playing, is different from just going over time. there were lots of winners who went a little over and courteously wrapped up. the orchestra even gave Bette 150 seconds, A FULL MINUTE LONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE, before they even started playing. just being diva-ish and going on because you're "above" or "better than" the people running the awards is not okay. (by the way, the broadcast, at least for me, had to be cut off only about a minute into the final song, probably due to her running over time.)

@smallcrabs17 жыл бұрын
i understand that this may possibly be her last award, which is why she acted that way, but again this is an award show, it not just about you, no matter how dedicated you think you are, or how much you may have deserved it; she failed to acknowledge others in that moment, which is such a pity.
@aroundtheworldin80sdayscas805 жыл бұрын
She failed nothing. She did exactly what she was paid to do. Play the character of Bette Midler and make sure that her speech, from an awards show that is not watched by the masses, was front page news the following day - thus providing publicity for the Broadway show she was in.

I could forgive someone who is winning their first tony to go on a bit longer than necessary, after all they are probably in shock and excited. An actor or actresses dream is to win a tony. But Bette took way too long. And she wasn't even as good as the girl in Miss Saigon in my opinion.
