I read lots of comments about "you should have," in reference to second wagon, second truck, larger chopper, etc. The family is using just what they have. All those "should have..." costs money. It appears they only have a couple of days of chopping work, using what they have. Investing in other equipment may help speed the chopping process, but also costs money for not much use time. What equipment they have works for them. They are minimalists. Society does not have many of these types left. Many in 2021 do not even understand the term. Good on the Bernard family!

That looks like a very good start for the silage crop. Even though there is a lot more in the field, I would think that it was a very satisfying day. It is so good to see neighbors helping neighbors which is also great role modeling for Wesley and Austin. That's just another great part of their "continuing education" on the Bernard farm.

It was a milestone event when I got to run the tractor and work alongside the grownups for the first time. I am now almost 66 years old and I'm envious of Wesley's position on the farm. He has a good handle on what is necessary, seems to enjoy it and is good at it. Good on you and Lawrence for instilling that attitude in both your children. I wish I was young again...BTW, I had to also learn to crank start the tractor I used. Wouldn't spent $8 for a battery as long as it would crank. Glory days! Glad y'all escaped Ida's wrath mostly unscathed. Peace!

I remember chopping corn silage and we were wet so I was driving a little tractor like Wesley was and I was pulling the tractor that was pulling the harvester and dump wagon. My job was to go one gear faster than the big tractor so I was spinning the tires and the one I was pulling had cleaned tracts to follow me. The water was deep enough that as I was going down the field I had a mallard drake paddling down the chopped corn rows.

Here in the Midwest we use upright cement stave silos or at least we did. As the dairies and beef herds have grown these operations have switched to using bunker silo systems. I always love silo filling and when I was in high school I would be able to stay home from school to help. Wes did a really good job packing the silage!!! The crop really looks good and as my dad would say, "that's a good problem to have!" Till next time.....

When I went to first grade, the teacher ask me when my birthday was, and I said when you chop corn and fill silo-( because that was what we were doing when it was my birthday) she says, when's that- I thought she didn't know much if she didn't know when to chop corn and fill silo!!
