why do metal heads love to compare metal to classical music like it makes it an intellectually superior genre it shows such ignorance toward classical music in general especially as contemporary classical is far more often aligned with electronic and electroacoustic sounds and aesthetics. I rate some areas of metal super highly but why would you try to highlight the fact that the music you like is making use of sounds and ideas that were established like 300 years ago rather than doing something new and creative

Eh, some metalheads are absolutely elististic and they make us, other metalheads, look bad. And I've been passionately listenting to metal for about half of my life (~12 years, give or take). Is the best music I've heard so far from a metal band? Yes, but that doesn't mean I should put it on some pedestal, like everything else is for plebs who don't know what music is. Elitists are just so close-minded. The worst part is when you have an elitist, but he's also an elistist when it comes to metal (eg. trve kvlt Black Metal fanboys).

Ah, the "metal = classical" argument. While I find it silly, I can see why people say it. Classical is considered the peak of sophisticated music and metal is often considered trash by anyone other than metalheads. It's a way for people to legitimize the genre. Also there is classical influence in SOME metal, like Metallica's And Justice For All, for example. It's full of lengthy tracks, volume dynamics, different passages that intertwine beautifully, etc. Then there's neoclassical, symphonic, and progressive metal which incorporate classical more directly. But yeah, nu-metal and any *insert here*-core is not classical at all. I just love all types of metal though. Good music is good music.
@ranchyeezys57355 жыл бұрын
Yes metal is not for everyone. You can't really compare genres, or ever have inferior or superior genres, because music is subjective to taste. Just enjoy what you like.

Better examples of classical influence in metal than "And Justice for All": "Storm of the Light's Bane" by Dissection, "The Karalian Isthmus" by Amorphis, "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" by Burzum, "Pentagram" by Gorgoroth. IMO this is actually more of a death and black metal thing than Thrash or Heavy Metal.

Personally, I hate the cover art that is just the artist's face. I can only think of a few where it has actually worked and MF Doom made a legendary album cover on Madvillian. As for other kinds of album art I do think artist should put time and effort into the craft since it influences a lot to style and iconography. The best example would be marvel comics doing classic hip hop album covers with marvel characters. You know what they are referncing just by the albums being legendary and the style. It also just adds to the experience as melon said with the albums Currents by tame impala and Nonogon Infinity coming to mind.

Cover art is very important to an album. I’ve given multiple albums by artist that I didn’t know a chance based solely on the fact that their albums had good cover art. If an artist puts a great deal of work into their music, there’s no reason that their artwork shouldn’t get the same treatment.

Things every good album needs: • Track cohesion (songs flowing properly) • Good, or reasonable album art • Good (if not exceptional) production • All-around great songs • Best tracks should make up the first half of the tracklist • Energetic or mood setting openers

For me, Dark Side of the Moon is the only Pink Floyd album that feels less like an album and more like an experience. I also just like the sound that they went for on that album more, and it feels more personal to me than any of the other big 4. That's why it's my favorite.

When listening to an album like Blonde, the album art definitely enhances the experience. Vivid and descriptive albums can often be hard to paint an initial image in the listener's mind. However, in the case of blonde, the contrast of different shades of brown, white and the green really paints this image of a dream-like reality. Frank under the shower hiding his face, replicates the insecurities and vulnerability he portrays in his album. This is evident in any albums and not just blonde. The album art allows the listener to understand the artist's state of mind while making the album.

I think album art never necessarily gives me an expectation or informs me on the music itself but rather gives me a fresh idea of in which context the music an be used. For example, I wouldn't imagine those figures going through the desert or something similar if I listened to Sleep without it (I'd most likely imagine something generic like Satanic imagery) but the art givs me a fresh new perspective on the vibe of the music.

I cringed at the metal/classical music one. Like woah classical music influences music today? Slow down there I love how to metalheads, metal is the most complex music any plebs could listen to and this complexity HAS to be connected to sophisticated musics like classical music.
@professionalmemeenthusiast21176 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's really annoying. My dad is an actual classical guitarist and metal doesn't usually impress him. Robert Fripp is the best modern guitarist easily, because he plays, thinks and writes like a classical musician/composer.

I really love the new Gorillaz music. At first I wasn’t really with it but it grew on me. I think that’s a reason a lot people don’t like the new Gorillaz. You have to give it time and it will sink in. But if you have listened to it multiple times or came back to it and still don’t enjoy it then that’s okay your entitled to your own opinion. In my opinion I love Gorillaz and literally everything they do. So usually when I watch the music videos I ignore the music and mainly focus on the visuals. Anyways that’s all

Album art is is the bands shot at giving the listener a visualization to set the tone one should have before going into the album. Everything in the style, quality, colors, and content of the art matters. It's part of the reason why vinyl is popular as well, where the record cover and sleeve had a lot of effort put into their presentation inside and out because the listener would look at this when playing the record and have a complimenting visual to match the material. Bands or artists can even take it one step farther and dress the part to match their music like the misfits or kiss. Album art can even influence things like stage visualizations or lighting color and can help define an artists particular era.
@hollysmyth27046 жыл бұрын
As someone who is part of it, I can testify that the Panic! fan base can be incredibly irritating at times. Especially when any critique I make about the new album is responded to with the phrase "he swore to shake it up and we swore to listen", yeah I freaking swore to listen if he continued to produce high quality music. That aside while I wouldn't call A Fever You Can't Sweat Out "one of the greats", it is a good record. The sound was unique and it does set itself a part from other pop punk records of the time. The production can be a little spotty at times, but the lyrics tell a story and touch on interesting themes such as religion. I hope people don't let their dislike of the fan base keep them from checking out their music.

I am sick of seeing the solo wu projects being compared to 36 chambers. the appeal of 36 chambers is how grimy it is, and the variety of rappers involved. none of the solo projects come close in that regard. honestly if you're gonna say that any solo is a classic it would probably be ODB's. personally I just feel like while all the albums were consistent, none of them packed a punch like the original project

Hell, I dont even HAVE a Dark Side vinyl yet. I want one, yeah, but it's not my favorite and while it's cool, I just find so much emotional depth in their other concept albums. As an artist myself (working on both the art direction, and packaging for my debut album Soaring Stereo Bomb) have to say it does and doesn't. It is but one of many factors. However it is a critical one. Your cover and packaging must look good for the customer to want to pick it up. To see fantastic examples of packaging I recommend buying physical copies of Freeway & Jake One's "The Stimulus Package", MC Esoteric's concept album "Saving Seamus Ryan", and Kazzer's "Go for Broke". None sold too well as these are or were (The Kazzer project is done sadly) all underground artists. But if they did sell them in major stores people would probably be quite interested in the design, and pick it up on impulse. From there you have a potential new fan.
