You are spot on Eileen when you call out Carrie's selfish behaviour toward Charlotte, expecting her to bail her out of her money problems by selling her engagement ring. When I first watched that episode, I was so offended on Charlotte's behalf and couldn't understand how that was supposed to be how a friendship worked. Back then I had a cash-strapped friend who was obsessed with SATC and expected me to help finance her irresponsible lifestyle. Needless to say, she wasn't a friend for much longer. It's true that it's best not to mix friendship and money.

Hi! I’m from New York-at the time this was set rent control was way more common than it is now. Her eating out, smoking, drinking, taxis, and shopping are more unrealistic, but I can also tell you there are a plethora of girls I know currently living this life and not saving for the future, which is what Carrie did.

Lovely collection! I bought my first LV when I was 25 and I only used that bag a few times, haha. Also, love your clutch! I have an Eva clutch in the DE print and love the little chain. But I don’t want to spend so much money on it now, I have been *esluxy* buying the bag I want, it is as good as LV and is one of my favorite things. Durability

SATC hasn’t aged well - I enjoyed it at the time, but now cringe at the shallowness, the obsession with shopping, the financial irresponsibility, the problematic relationships with the male characters…..

It was created as feminist propaganda trying to destabilise the family nucleus, thus giving more power to the government to influence people. Both parents at work, children can be indoctrinated by propaganda at school. See how many people come now from broken families, it did work at the end.

Carrie Bradshaw is an escapist character, she's the most unrealistic one from all of the other ladies: Miranda is probably most relatable to ordinary women, while Charlotte and Samantha, well, are the extreme opposites where society's expectations of women go. Carrie is supposed to be this fantasy all women crave: someone who can work on her own time, shop famous labels, travel, be courted by wealthy and handsome men, be free and irresponsible. Well, even this carefree character is faced with real world problems. And I absolutely would not bail a 'Carrie' out. Where are too many financially toxic women who spend alimony or welfare checks on labels while children get second hand items and crappy foods, women who spend all their earnings on labels but expect others to pay for their rent or emergencies. Now I have 0 problem with owning labels, I do too but I make sure it's the last thing I buy and that I can well afford it.

They always mess up the painted edges with overpaint, such a pity. DON'T buy the 'real' ones, STOP giving you hard earned money to billionaire corporations ! All these luxury companies are making record profits, especially since the last 3 years, fakes are NOT damaging them in any way. A women wearing a *esluxy* is still advertising the real thing in the eyes of most people.

Greta video with a great message for the younger generation who can learn from Carrie’s poor approach to spending. It is simply unrealistic and irresponsible to not have savings for a rainy day. In today’s world where we have ready access to social media, instagram, ads and constant messages promoting consumption, we all need to learn to be judicious and not fall prey to materialism. There is nothing wrong with enjoying your hard earned money every now and then responsibly!!

I think everything you said about Carrie is absolutely true. I was like that until I was about 30 and got my act together. But I my humble opinion, Carrie is a fantasy character. I remember women just liked to watch the show for a bit of escapism from their snotty kids, nasty bosses or complaining husband's. But it is a different era, I mean how any trees were killed for those shopping bags.😮

I have to say, I understand why people say they don't care about people buying fake or knockoff goods, or why people should care. However, people don't necessarily "care" about people who own fake goods. Smart people buy bags at *hotdups* . In fact, people who have the money to buy luxury goods and invest in them do so for a reason.

I never watched satc, but I came across a video comparing Carrie's life to her creator Candace Bushnell. Obviously Carrie is based on her - writer, living in NYC, fashion lover. Candace definitely had her struggles - she couchsurfed or had roommates for years even when she was successful, but she never wrote them into Carrie's experiences. Carrie is definitely her fantasy self brought to life lol.

Rent control in New York is more common than you think. I have family in Manhattan who still have their apartment from the late 60’s. Last I check they paid maybe $700-800 a month. But you’re right Carries income doesn’t match her lifestyle😂

I hope this inspires those that probably still live above their means to come to their senses and live a more realistic life. Yes, this is fiction and it was such a well-written series. Fun to watch!! My daughter and her family lived the last three years in Manhattan and their two bedroom apartment (975 sq. ft.) was $4,000 per month. They moved to the suburbs because their rent was going to go up to $5200 per month. They are now paying $4300 per month for a four bedroom house with a backyard. They have two kids, so it is so much more sensible for them (even though I am going to miss walking in the city when I visit them).

SATC was relevant to me when it aired and I was in my teenage years. I acted, spoke and had the same financial mindset as the ladies (Carrie mainly) on the show. These women were in their 30s. I was 18. So sad.

I agree with you… People fail to realize the ladies in SATC were wealthy. Average people do not have access to wealthy people or lucrative business opportunities. Carrie was essentially a well-known writer in Manhattan. Their lifestyle is unrealistic for the average person. The TV show is meant to entertain (escapism) the viewer even if it’s not relatable. I actually loved SATC and Carrie’s relationship with Big. Life is rather complex. Relationships do not always end with a happy ending. There are so many people who are single and experience instability in some aspect of life like Carrie.

Great analysis! Thank you, Eileen for this video! I always liked this show, although I never liked Carrie´s character. She was whining too much for my taste. And I did not like her clothing. I was a bit like Carrie, financially, one time, but I sobered up, when I bought my first apartment. You are right, there are some discrepancies between her income and spending habits. In my experience even with a decent income one can´t do everything. There has to be priorities. Since I live in Europe, I prioritize travel to clothes and eating out. But to each their own! 🐩🌻🌻

No one should ever watch Sex and the City with such seriousness. The show was meant to be a fantasy of friendship, relationships, and fashion! So it blows my mind to keep seeing KZbinrs analyzing the characters finances. If realism is that important, maybe watch another show? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Great analysis about Carrie and the fantasy era in NY, during the 80s and 90s. This was just a “ flavor of the month “ idea, not only from the producers of Sex in the City, but a fashion, to be caught in the fashion itself, and show the world you can not afford it, but still , you can own it. I still know people mostly in their 30s and 40s living in the edge of their possibilities. Therefore, you can find on line great deals, and consignments stores, where people dump their shoes, bags, bracelets and even luxurious suitcases, because they are desperate selling there expensive luxuries goodies, to pay the high cost of living in such a city like NY. This was great , i remember this era. I never got caught on, but I curated my closet and I am more than happy. Thanks Eileen. ❤

When I saw the show years ago I was fascinated by it and really liked Carrie… years later and with a more mature point of view, it makes absolutely no sense financially! It’s not only Carrie, on the last movie, when the 4 of them are told that they have to pay 22.000 dollars to stay an extra night at the hotel, they all panic and immediately start packing, although they all arrived with LV luggage and an extremely expensive wardrobe. So those same 4 women, didn’t have 5.500 dollars each, to pay in an emergency? Although Samantha was willing to pay 50.000 dollars for a ring in the previous movie? And her boyfriend actually gifted her the ring! 🤔

I agree - watching this show when it was originally on it was so intoxicating to see the fast paced boujee lifestyle of these ladies - as an almost 40 year old Carrie (and all of the ladies) are whiny and irresponsible. Funny how you can watch/see something at different times and theyre completely different views of the same show.

This is a really great vlog because its a reality check about spending and saving for the future and the end game eg retirement. I am always thankful that I have never had the body for clothes and shoes. Handbags, jewellery etc I can take it or leave it but one thing I know for sure you have to put something away in an account every payday and even if its only a few dollars because it's true from little things big things grow. The other thing I know for sure is that Carries spending was never sustainable for the average person and if you whack it on a credit card its a double nasty because you have to pay it back so your great purchase ends up costing you more than the original price and you are a slave to debt if you couldn't afford in in the first place. Put a little away every payday you never know when the need will arise.

Eyelean... It makes sense to me. Carrie Bradshaw will buy an outfit. Wear it a couple of times and will return it. And this process will repeat itself over and over - Fake Luxury. It's no different from youtubers who will buy luxury to create content on Youtune and photos for Instagram and will return the item back to the store only to repurchase new items.

I was way too young to watch this show when it originally aired and once I saw a few episodes as an adult, I found it completely laughable and unrealistic how much money Carrie has compared to her job. I'm guessing she's in massive amounts of credit card debt that the writers just gloss over! 😆 Unless her job pays her $20,000 a month, seriously how does she afford brand new designer items?!! Emily in Paris is the same, ridiculous type of TV show too. Nobody in Paris lives like that unless they're trust fund babies or in massive debt!

at least she didn’t have credit card debt or a mortgage, a car payment, klarna or whatever pay-in-4 stuff going on. she was living within her means, just right on the edge and not saving anything. her plan was a man, which for many women still is a plan. just a few decades ago, it was the only financial plan available to women who didn’t want to be dirt poor.

Not only is she not saving, on her income, she'd run out of money way before the end of the month. I also find it difficult she's that good a writer. She never reads, she has zero political aptitude, and she's not a sophisticated thinker - she's the least savvy of her four friends. I know a lot of journalists and writers and they all hustle all the time. She has one column. Carrie clearly was getting money from her parents or a wealthy aunt somewhere. 😅

I understand where you’re coming from, but I think the point is that characters like Carrie can negatively influence watchers. It’s kind of like the Instagram life phenomenon. People see others living the high life, visiting places all the time, buying to their hearts content, but we don’t really see the reality of what’s behind those photos. It can lead people to spend irresponsibly or just lead to feeling like a failure. I appreciate analyzing her lifestyle through the lens of realism. It helps keep things in perspective.
