Let's Break: Ultima 9 - Ascension (Part 4)

An anti-walkthrough for Ultima Ascension, where we bend the game out of shape and try to complete it by exploiting as many bugs as possible. In this episode, we slaughter our way to three more sigils and then go off to annoy the Guardian.

Fantastic! Besides entertaining, you are making it extra funny. In the Blackthorn scene, I also did it once to have the Avatar killed just when it's triggered, so after cancelling out the automatic journal load apparition, I could watch the happenings while I was dead. Surely, there is a lot of glitch-potential in there, it's just since the scene is too long, it takes an enormous time to experiment. Same for the Guardian scenes. Otherwise, "László" is a Hungarian name and it's common through the series that Gypsies are filled wih Hungarian references, like Zoltán in an earlier title and Anya, who is best known for being the mother of somebody, while "anya" actually means "mother" in Hungarian. This was so fantastic and unique for me at the time. It's still great, just now I'm more used to that such things are modeled over countries or languages that are not of the development team or general theme of the game/area. Though I (re)learned about the jumping scene-cancel trick this year, it's new that you can use it to cancel out Raven. What a relief that it's a possibility! Magnificent!

Thanks! That's very interesting about the Hungarian aspect to it. And yes, I did try to get the avatar killed during the scene but neither Blackthorn nor the guard seemed willing to strike the fatal blow once the cutscene started. I did get some excellent footage where I led Blackthorn to the beach and then triggered the cutscene with him missing, but it had a few technical problems caused by the Orb's video crashing the HDMI recorder and breaking the sound sync on that entire session. I'm intending to show that as part of the bonus material in part 5.

@@tapewolf I used skeletons for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5O1naypoJdqbLc NPCs are very finicky regarding when they attack and who. Sometimes they are triggered when the Avatar is being attacked, sometimes when other NPC is the target and as I found a few weeks ago, the charm spell turns everything upside down, too. That latter also can be used to make giant spiders bind various monsters with web. I hope I eventually find one that also causes some fun glitch. But the skeletons, those always want to cut everything up. They are very reliable for combat related experiments. (Of course it doesn't necessarily work out for first. If the Avatar dies before the scene or the skeleton is distracted to other NPC then it's not that fun.)

Low-key love how the dialogue is cut off during cutscenes in this video. I do the same thing when I play video games sometimes. :P

@@CharemTheShadox Thanks, I had a lot of fun trying to make the dialogue sound ridiculous throughout most of the series. The Rom Baro is particularly good at it because his lines usually start with "Ahh" or "Hmm".

The closest is her complaining - if you show the slightest hesitation - that if you're not humble enough to solve her problems for her, you're not good enough to save the world.

When you were at the shrines, were you intentionally boosting the attributes that weren't governed by that shrine's virtue?

No. I was picking ones I thought would be useful early on, and then more-or-less randomly afterwards.

why did we accept these cutscenes as tolerable? It's offensive just to look at. What was collectively wrong with us? Watching your anti walkthrough is giving me an existential crisis
