I don't fully understand the tool yet, but I'm starting to piece things together. A number of clever mechanisms to specifically hold angles combined to allow for configurable and repeatable passes. Since it's a tool sharpener, it's not a terribly great revelation, but the clever combination of clever mechanisms is interesting, and showing them piece by piece certainly helps to understand how each part adds to the functionality of the whole. Wonderful!

When you need to find the edge of a disk on the mill you can use the small angle cosine effect to your advantage. First you take a very shallow tangential cut on the disk. Then measure the width of the cut surface by eye with a caliper. Having that measurement and the disk’s diameter, you can trig out the depth of the light cut you made to a good degree of accuracy. If your disk is 1” diameter and your light cut leaves a patch that’s about 50 thousandths wide then the depth of your cut is only about 6 tenths of a mil. Of course the larger the diameter the better it works.

Excellent, I am up to this part on my kit too. The little bits supplied are on their way to the spare bits bin as we speak. I learn't heaps from your video as usual. In regard to uses, the designer; EccentricEngineer has a video that shows how it is used. While the work arm will keep the head at the correct angle regardless of where you move it, it has to be attached to the slide to keep it the right distance from the Wheel, as you move left to right. I also plan to make some alternative holders that fit for other tools like Wood Plane Blades, Chisels, etc. Utilising that rail to allow you to slide the blade across the wheel and keep the perfect distance.

The shop I work for here in Western Washington is in the process of filling out all out our collection of metric tooling. At this point if youre in indistrial repair in North America you need to have both. Heck, Cutting Edge Engineering keeps both sets of tooling around and they're in Australia.

I found some Regal R8 metric collets on ebay in 8mm and 10mm but for smaller sizes like your 5mm, I use a small ER11 collet chuck with a 1/2 shank and hold it in a 1/2 R8 collet. Yes, the stack up adds a little run-out but not much if you are careful. This also lets me hold funny imperial sizes that I don't have an R8 collet for.

That t-nut may be a bit snug if the corner radius is rubbing on the corner of the 5mm slot. Most satisfying part of mashining is when all the differnt parts come together and you get an actual working mechanism. Sadly not a thing I get to admire often in the shop I work at. We get parts from baking factories to chemical and petro industry to tank and warship transmissions, but rarely a complete project in house.
@paullehmor982
@paullehmor982 3 күн бұрын
The T-nut will never reach the ends of the slot. The stop block that it locks to arm is always somewhere in the middle, and it moves just a about the radius of the end mill that is sharpened. The whole arm assembly is mainly used for end mill sharpening.

Great to see the progress on this project. I only get to work on mine in between side projects (does that mean this is a side-side project?) and then only in two or three hour blocks once a week so it has taken me literal years to get done to this point. This is one time that I am making mine from bar stock and not the kit of parts. Those little discs would have bene frustrating to try and use.

The left side should have a sliding fit, not a clamping fit. The clamping action on the right side is sufficient. By tightening the left clamp you lock the angle of the arm, and it can easily move up and down the side of the table, keeping the angle constant. As far as I understand, the main reason for tilting the arm is to compensate for grinding wheel wear when sharpening end mills, so you follow the actual surface of the wheel. Work piece angles are then set by turning the work head.

I thought you’d probably collected all the chips and give them to someone who eventually melt them and do another bar, does it bother to have aluminum and iron chips all mixed up? Easy to fix with a magnet though. Also, could you have used a piece of noble wood? Maybe not oversized along the sides? My guess is that the noblest of materials (the one that comes from trees) has a tendency to shrink under pressure…? And that would not give you a solid bench..? But you didn’t square the aluminium bar either. Best wishes! You r the best

The clamps on the left and right: why were they designed with two different size holes?
@paullehmor982
@paullehmor982 3 күн бұрын
The right side handle has a M5 screw to make it slide smoothly in the slot. Contrary, the position of the left handle is fixed. A M5 screw there would interfere with the cut out in the clamp. The position of the hole is choosen so that the two clamping pieces line up nicely with the end of the arm. It looks great when finished!
