I built a 54 cal. Pennsylvania rifle. I worked on it in my spare time. It was a Thompson kit. Finished it in time for the 1981 PA Flintlock season. Second week l killed a 4 point buck. I had that little buck mounted. The Taxidermist didn't quite understand. That little buck was more important than the bigger bucks l got.

Cool Another kit build. I first saw my first hawkin in the 1970s. A friends Thompson center fire. I bought two books vol 1 and 2 called 100 yrs in the hawkin load. While not fancy and lacking tech specs it cover the hawkin and the hawkin brothers of St. Louis. In modern deer riffles modified from military guns, you see the term sporterized. This often entails cutting a full length stock down and shortening the gun for deer hunting. What got me was the hawkin of today is sporterized. But hawkin was THE GUN you got when you went out west to find a new life. Each one was custom made to order. Kit Carson was a mountain man and Indian scout. His custom made hawkin was made to his perception of what he needed. Spending most of time on horse back, scouting for the cavalry , he came up with the short version. So the true inventor of the sporterized gun easvKit Carson and the first sporterized rifle would be his hawkin. What I don’t know is if Carson used brass or iron fittings.

In looking at the lock photos I see a number of brown and blue colors on the hammer. This suggests that these parts are Case hardened using the bone case method.

It's a Lyman Great Plains Rifle by another name? Sure looks like it. They're great guns. My GPR was made by Investarms.

I just came upon your videos. About 30 years ago I built a cva mountain flintlock kit. The problem with all those “economical kits” were the locks/frizzens made from softer steel. I’ve since hardened the frozen to improve the percentage of firing success My question is how is the quality of the lock/frizzen?
@ILoveMuzzleloading Жыл бұрын
The locks aren’t as good as the American made “custom locks”, but I’ve fired at least 100 shots with this lock and have had no issue

Cool beans! I was going to ask if iron furniture was available as an option. I have a TC caplock 50Hawken, and would prefer to replace the brass with iron, but don't know if I do. On a flintlock iron is more authentic.
@ILoveMuzzleloading2 жыл бұрын
Great insights Kevin. I like iron too myself. Oddly enough, the iron was more expensive in the 18th century, brass was cheaper which is why many believe there are so many brass mounted longrifles rather than iron

Crazy as it sounds, just grab a propane torch with a fine tip and go to town. Plan it out a bit. Have tried wrapping with twine and cordage and it’s time consuming with varied results.

having built several of these I find the cheak piece design to be something that has , got to go. I square them off in couture with the lines of the comb and general lines of the lower stock and butt.
