Don't forget sharpening stones. Chisels won't work without them. I am totally hooked on the Liogier rasps now. Lousy tools make gun building frustrating. The good tools make it a pleasure.

Yes, a carding brush for those files, keep them clear they work better, last longer. I would say if somebody is going to make one kit, don’t kid yourself you will do a few, plan on it. Looking forward to this build, I like the style of it, Gemmer. Thanks Ethan

Sweet i just ordered one of thes investarms from gunbroker yesterday. It looks to be very nice used investarms hawken in .54 cal. with 1:48 twist. The only thing that makes it not look brand new, is the brass is tarnished, but that is just the way I like it, so a win-win!

I would love to see a shop tour. I keep looking at your back bench rack to see what’s back there. Years ago, milling machines like a Bridgeport were not even a dream! We called files the poor mans milling machine. Back then Nickelsen was GOD! The gold standard. But their quality has gone down. Harder to find locally is a German file… PHERFD or horse in English. I really like these for metal. In metal, esp brass and aluminum, your teeth clog up. A good file card comes in handy. A closed file tooth will leave scratches. A file card card is a brush with metal bristles for cleaning out files. Swiss needle files are handy for detail work in metal. I found some quality rifflers at woodcraft. I think they are French or Italian. A riffler has two heads and often a curved head to allow you to get into all sorts of odd tight spaces in wood. In pattern work they are indespensible.

When is the next one coming out? I'm trying to build mine before the muzzleloading season is over and i'm just not 100% sure out to finish it the right way.

A lot of folks will just trot down to Harbor Crap Tools and buy the cheapest set they carry. My suggestion is if they have more than one set or tool on the shelf or rack look at which one is the better quality. A couple dollars more at purchase can relate to ease of use and durability. Even if you only do a couple of guns, these tools are great for other projects.

Yup, one kit won’t work. The advantage of kits is that they solve the most vexing issue of all…..DIMENSIONS! I was lucky to get a set of shop drawings for the 1874 sharps. The muzzleloaders are a nightmare. When you want to build one, the cost and effort makes it a requirement to be as period correct as possible. Finding DIMS for lock parts, guns in general etc is not easy. The custom made nature and lack of accessible specimens make it hard. The kits get you a good place to start. Barrel speed is also an issue. Modern barrels are super fast compared to ball shooters. I’ve seen as much as 1 in 72 in and more. This one is 1 in 60. Your last one was 1 in 48. While sabot slugs are the rage, they are illegal to hunt with during muzzle season. So it’s nice to find a slower more period correct barrel.
