I'm considering building this same kit as my first flintlock but I've had a few people tell me that the Investarms lock is substandard and has issues. What was you impression of the lock?
@jacobwilbert10182 ай бұрын
@mojomike3913 Basically a TC lock, uses a coil for the main spring. Its no Chambers or L&R but the only real problem is angle of the jaws. Your gonna wanna have your flint bevel down to get your contact higher up the frizzen. Still it will only strike at maybe the halfway mark. Its not ideal but its fine, they work.
@ILoveMuzzleloading2 ай бұрын
@@mojomike3913 Sorry mike, don't know how I missed this. It's an okay lock, fine for hunting, but I've had difficulty with the breech design when trying to do match style shooting. It's been great for a few shots here and there, but when trying to do a lot of shooting it can struggle. Working on a 100 shot review video for this piece.

I have a TC .50 flintlock Hawken (factory built), and a CVA .54 flintlock (was percussion and I converted it) Hawken kit that came to me half finished. I finished it the way I wanted and both are working guns. Love them so much I sold off all my other firearms. Now I've got the hunger to do a full build (75%, I'm not blacksmithing the metal parts) but would love to carve the stock, all inletting, etc. More pride when you say you made it.

Hi, Ethan! I never normally take the time to write KZbin comments, but I did want to take the time to thank you for your contribution to the community. I started work on a Traditions Trapper a couple of months back and was able to make a nice finished piece following your guide over on the NMLRA page. It's my first muzzleloader, and I'll get to go make my first smoke (with supervision) next weekend with it. Following your page, I also found out about the spring shoot in time to make it down to Friendship. I had no idea that the Mecca of muzzleloading was an hour from where I live! That's all to say that your work is appreciated. At least for me, you've provided an entryway into a broad and sometimes complex hobby/sport/art. I hope that you do keep making your content for as long as you find enjoyment in it. Have a great 4th! G

I remember when I built my rifle shope musket the amount of time making sure my underlugs and corresponding chiseled out areas to except the lugs took me over a week before committing to the work. I measured and double checked measurements so many times. And then it came to the barrel pin holes in the fore end and that was another few days of measuring and checking until it was time to commit. And it came out well, not bragging it was a real learning curve for me, and was so relieved that it worked out.

Hi Ethan. I want to congratulate you from Spain, for how well your Investarms rifle has finished, a replica quite similar to an original Hawken. I have followed all your steps, video after video. You have worked very well, with great skill and patience. It is a pity that these rifles are not imported in Spain because they have a coil spring lock, although I have the Dikar Hawken Mountain (CVA), in 58 caliber and the Pedersoli Hawken Rocky Mountain in 54 caliber. I have also had a Hawken Woodsman from Ardesa (Traditions), like the one you have. Congratulations and best regards from Spain.

My percussion Hawken kit just arrived and I’ll be putting it together later this summer. I really like how your dark on dark came out so I’ll blue the barrel, black the brass, and use a deep stain. This will be my first and only wood stock, cold blued rifle. Can I use a simple mineral oil or gun oil over all the parts in the last step instead of the specialty oils?
@ILoveMuzzleloading2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely you can Lonnie. I recommend the mineral oil over the gun oil on your wood stock, it will be a "cleaner" oil and shouldn't color your stock any. The gun oil might have a different color that could dye your stock an ugly green. Feel free to use the gun oil on your metal hardware.

I live in the sub tropics and I understand why you mentioned using a modern lacquer but I have never had to ever resort to this. I would be upset at myself for such a thing. Linseed oil mixed with gum turpentine has been my choice and I like a satin finish which with use begins to polish areas of the stock. I have had problems with mould but not on modern replica muzzleloaders. There is a good all round product here safe for organic materials which kills mould. But I have only encountered this twice in my life and we have killer humid summers.

Can you please recommend a couple brands that are reasonably affordable, and of good quality? I’m planning on getting into this within the next year, and I think building my own would not only be fun, but as you said, I would know the gun inside and out. How could you start out in something in a better way?
@ILoveMuzzleloading2 жыл бұрын
Certainly! There's nothing wrong with starting with the Traditions Brand, thousands of folks do. It's a lower price point and easier to handle on a budget. From there if you want something more, the InvestArms models like this one have been great to me. This rifle does a nice job. Once you break 1000 clams, you are into the Pedersoli models, as well as the Kibler. Pedersoli has a wide selection of eras and models. The Kiblers are a more limited selection, but the quality is top notch on the market. I hope this helps, reach out anytime!

Um your not using the 2 trigger system correctly I don't think.... on my cap and ball CVA rifle I built I would fully cock the hammer squeeze the 1st trigger till it clicked then a fine touch on the 2nd trigger set it off (releases the hammer) the idea of the 2 triggers is so you can set the amount of the trigger pull the beauty of that is really important when target shooting if the set trigger is set too hard your groups will be erratic.... but when you set it correctly and use it correctly it is unbeatable ! i believe that is the way all black powder rifles are set up with double triggers the first trigger from the muzzle back is your set trigger it's a hard pull... the second trigger is the firing trigger.... at least that is the way I used it....

Danish oil, tru-oil, tung oil, and on and on. you can buy real tung oil from the real milk paint store online. but the tung oil and most anything else you buy from a handwear store, lowes, Home Depot, ect. all are loaded with polyurethane. why do you think it is sticky and shiny? i like it but it is not even close to the way they really finished them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks OLSKOOL, I appreciate you watching and your comment. I'll admit I'm not a chemist so I didn't know these oils had polyurethane in them.
