Let's Build the Suprinceton, Part 2: Chassis Painting, Assembly and Wiring

This is the 2nd video in a 3-part video series, in which the scratch-build of Uncle Doug's Suprinceton is shown in detail, preparing it for installation in an original Supro Supreme tweed cabinet. We paint and letter the chassis, install all the components in the chassis, then begin the process of wiring all the components together into a functional circuit. Several modifications are made to the Fender 6G2 Princeton circuit, which is the basis for the build, including a switchable NFB Loop, a switchable cathode bypass cap for the second triode of V1, and a unique grounding method in which all the HV circuit grounds are connected directly to the HV Center Tap, rather than the aluminum chassis. In addition we will have a discussion of electrolysis, which can adversely affect the combination of aluminum and steel, and take three brief hot-rod-related breaks from the "drudgery" of wiring and completing the chassis. Here is a schematic of the Suprinceton circuit: app.box.com/s/4w0s4i1iwu8qz34...

Lol love the hotrod fireup payback for the leafblowers 😅 Reminds me of last spring the neighbour hoodlums were out front one day admiring gee i dont know perhaps about 4 of their "sewing machines" running in the street for a solid 45 mins to an hour.... (infringing bylaws i am sure) at any rate i heard enough cracked my garage open about 18" just enough to see the chrome bumper on my 67 and let the 440ci Big Block chrysler breath for Oh maybe 5 mins... didnt even warm up fully before i gave it a few snorts and the neighbourhood kids suddenly went silent. Love the videos uncle! Tube amps and hotrods n humour!! Thank you!

Thank you again for a great video. I love the very methodical way you go through every step and the additional deviations into theory. I also enjoy they way you are getting "fresh air" in between - I hope your neighbours do too. Firing up un-muffled vintage combustion engines in a residential neighbourhood did get me into a lot of trouble here in Germany. I am amazed that you were able to make the labels look so good on your first try with this type of decals. I have experimented with water slide decals for a while, but finally gave up on them. You need to cut them out as close as possible to the letters and you always want to round all the corners. Square corners will stick out a lot more visually. Spraying clear coat over them tended to be a lottery. Some lacquers sort of dissolved the membranes and made them all wrinkly, some turned the black letters grey and some worked just fine. Be sure to experiment on a separate piece first. This turned out to be too much of a hassle so I found some rub-on letters (you can still get them on ebay or Amazon). It takes patience to get them on straight and you never have enough As or Es on the sheet, but once you clear coat those they look kind of professional without the "halo" of the membrane.

I have a restomod 67 Mustang convertible! T5 trans, 3.55 rear end, front disc brake conversion. This past summer I pulled the 302, had a local engine builder build me a 347 stroker short block. Toss in AFR aluminum heads, long tube headers, classic Edelbrock performer and 500cfm carb. Over the winter she’s getting a sniper upgrade! I’ve done all the upgrades and work myself. This is the second time I’ve pulled and rebuilt the engine. Did it in 04 just to refresh the 1968 302! Moderate street cam, 4bbl and manifold upgrade back then. Suspension has all been upgraded too!

@@miloferreira-hayes8155 Don't see '34's huh? Geez! Did they not have them in the UK back then? Or the hot rod scene isn't big over there? I imagine the open-wheeler configuration would be a very interesting drive in the hissen down rain all the time! Front n back wheels flingin' roostertails of rainwater over everything travelling behind it & in front of it as well as occupants. Pushbikers are probly nervous round these 'fenderless' hotrods, or they should be. Even other car drivers need to stay in their own lane a tad more vigilantly also. If you haven't got a 'hardtop' one o these it might get too cold in the UK winter.

Another great video! Looks like a lovely amp build - and some nice rides too. V8, a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. You really should get a DeLorean, if you don't have one already! :) I never rivet the tube sockets. It's a pain in the ass to replace one if it fails. Screws are way nicer to do that kind of work, though I've seen rivets used all over the place in vintage gear. Had my good deal of swearing and ranting too. Speaker wire disconnect resistor is a good idea. I do that too on smaller amps like EL84 PP. Thanks for the insights on electrolytic corrosion. Being a bicycle mechanic with a keen eye, I see it especially on bikes that have been standing around in the open. I'm not a fan of using the chassis as current flow path. Of course, that's how they did it way back when... but I've always used either star grounding or bus grounding, to keep the hum in check, AC wires twisted, heating center-tapped, virtually center-tapped or even with a hum pot. I like these old paper tube catalogs. Got two of them, a handy reference if I don'tt want to waste time looking a datasheet up in the net. "They say 1W, I say 2W" - for a good reason. Modern metal film resistors are way smaller in size compared to carbon comp - that's less thermal mass, less dissipation surface, higher temperatures. Not a good thing.

Thanks a lot for this series Doug, it's enormously helpful in the (admittedly slow) progress of my parallel SE 12BH7 micro amp build using a reverb transformer as the OT.

NOTE: I have prepared and posted a schematic for the Suprinceton circuit: app.box.com/s/4w0s4i1iwu8qz34gcqj899zq2hba2nhk Also, as several viewers have mentioned, the addition of 470 Ohm screen resistors may be a useful addition. Another good point: Using Pin 8 for B+ from the rectifier will allow the use of indirectly-heated rectifiers, like the GZ34 and 5AR4.

G'day Uncle Doug, Thanks for another great video. The Suprinceton is looking good. I always enjoy longer format videos, since they are usually filled with lots of good information. Sots & I are both looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the good work Andrew & Sots

@@UncleDoug No worries. I do have a few questions for you, which are not related to this build, as much as they would be to your channel. And they would be fairly involved. Where can I ask them?

What a terrific series on this little amp. Packed with useful advice and good practices for the noobs, and enough theory background for the rest of us. And what a gorgeous layout... Sometimes I wish you'd write a book collecting all your skill and advice in addition to YT. But if video is how you want to roll, I'll keep watching till they roll me out horizontal. Many thanks!

To make applying the decals easier, add some cleaning grade white vinegar to the water you're using. I also then like to use a pair or tweezers and a small paintbrush to apply them, in particular as you noted Doug, the smaller ones. Have some paper towel handy too to help soak up any excess water or to dampen and wrap around your finger to help flatten the decal down
@UncleDoug

Although I didn't use vinegar, by the time I finished, I did use most of the tricks you mentioned. Applying decals takes some time, experience, and resourcefulness.......it's more of an art than a basic procedure.

That chassis Looks very nice! BTW, I used to use that laser decal paper but switched to a computer controlled vinyl cutter a few years ago. The cutter allows me to make vinyl stencil's of anything I can print on the computer. I make stencil masks and spray paint (any color, not only black) labels with no decal ghosting. Not too expensive but well worth it for ultra professional results.

To apply the water decals, you did the application correctly, but after they are in their final position you need to lightly blot them to force the trapped water out from underneath which is what caused the white behind some of them. I learned this trick from building models and rockets.
@UncleDoug

Thanks for the tip, Jim. I did that on most of the decals......but apparently not all ;)
