In art school they warned us that one of the dangers of painting is being too precious about painting on canvas. This is exactly the kind of experimental abandon for which my teachers would give a standing ovation. I was not sure why you weren't happy with the first cooking, but maybe you require a twice-cooked journal and you want to test the absolute limits of this process. I was wondering why you did not bake the journal the second time, which would dry it out and possibly fix the dyes rather than dilute them. Maybe that's another groundhog-day video? I think it was wise of you to wrap it with a new fabric, so that there is no risk that the old stained towel contaminates the newer applications of spray stain and mica stain. I'm really curious to know what happens with the mica stains. Hats off to you Luise!

Comment two: a couple of years ago during a heat wave, I tried coffee and tea dying papers, left them outside to dry layered with doilies and plastic lace placemats. As in this video (about half an hour in), the impressions were not dark or crisp. So I left some of the lace "stencils" on the pages and sprayed a solution I made of coffee plus cheap imitation vanilla extract and left it to dry. That worked a little better, and it made the pages smell amazing!! So there's an idea if you don't like how your pages end up smelling, the way I didn't like mine when I tried eco dying with red cabbage. 😄 (Btw, changing the pH of the cabbage water with baking soda made a gorgeous blue color! I also neutralize my coffee-tea solution with baking soda so the papers won't be acidic. Just half a teaspoon was the right amount. I used pH strips for aquariums to check.) Heads up for anyone who hasn't tried anything like this yet: the wetter the page, the more likely it will tear.

I would have liked to see it dry before cooking again. I'm thinking the pieces that were so gorgeous but wet will "bleed" more and mix. Maybe that's what you wanted. You are a true scientific crafter, no holds barred. Great journey you are on. Good luck. ❤❤❤

Eek 😱 We have to wait more??? I love how so many of your pages turned out. And those die cuts 😳 Stunning!!! Scary putting it in for another 45 mins though, as the water reactive colours tend to disappear 🫠 Spray stains should be cool though & since the Alum fixes colours to the paper, maybe it will all be ok. The photo paper ones are spectacular! Can’t wait to see how this turns out …/gulp 🤞😁🤞

WOW!! LUISE you are so brave!! Can't wait to see the end results. I would of never guessed it would be so intact. My opinion on the coloring results on the pages with the matte photo paper is, could the acidity in the vinegar help with the colors of the digitals changing? This is so interesting!! ❤
@megmiranda9480 Жыл бұрын
Love your experimenting. You could also try steaming the journal. Ive gotten some great results with steaming eco dying. Wetting the paper and then steaming would keep the pages from being so water logged.
@luiseheinzl Жыл бұрын
Are there tutorials on how that is exactly done?
@megmiranda9480 Жыл бұрын
@@luiseheinzl I learned the technique directly from an artist. For eco dying paper we layer damp paper (you can spritz with vinegar) on a sheet of plastic (the type house painters use as a drop cloth) lay the leaves out and cover with paper towels that have been dipped in a solution of iron oxide. Then roll all the layers tightly around a pipe so that the whole thing is covered in plastic. Tie off the ends with rubber bands to seal and tightly wrap the tube with string. The idea is to create close contact paper to leaves. Then place the bundle on a rack above boiling water, cover and steam for 90 minutes. I hope this helps give you some ideas. My one thought though is that since the papers aren't immersed in water the inks/dyes aren't going to be diluted. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Cheers, Meg

Awesome experiment, I personaly would have left it up to an hour on the stove completly covered in the "water" and weighed down. Leave it maybe another 30m in the pot with the heat switched off. Take it out of the pot and leave it in the towel over night and only then open and see what was going on with it. But then that would be my experiment and not yours😂. You have done an awesome job❤❤

What a special project and being able to experience it via KZbin - did you hear me shout? I find the effect on the different paper types and quality fascinating! Such as photo paper, which contains chemicals that react to moisture and heat. I think it also applies to the black watercolor paper, which also contains all kinds of things - perhaps it says on the packaging? Anyway, I'm happy to be able to watch with you: thank you.

Hi Luise! As usual I'm watching KZbin on my TV, and had to turn on my phone to write this comment. I can't wait, have to know what is that powder you put on the page at about 3inutes 50 seconds into the video. It looks like cinnamon, or maybe cocoa powder, but is it some kind of instant coffee, or regular coffee grounds? It looked like a lot! I'm also on the edge of my seat waiting to see if you put all that in the oven, since your video has "cook" in the title! Distress inks have a lot 9f resin, so I'm worried about the fumes. Hope your kitchen has very good ventilation if you are actually going to "cook" that! 💙 👩🍳 Update: okay, about ainute and a half later you mention it's cinnamon, and a washing machine. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
@bettylongshore9594 Жыл бұрын
Does turmeric completely dissolve? I think that may be a factor in the powder you have left. You may need to crush up water color paint to maybe get the color without having the leftover residue powder because the paint would completely dissolve. I don't know. Your coffee crystals dissolved.
