Wow. They changed the ration heater a LOT. Much less bulk, and now included inside the MRE itself. Back in the days leading up to Iraq 2: Electric Booglaloo, they were separate items. I guess they're trying to stop everyone from making the typical fun-bombs by crushing up the green reactant pad and shoving it inside a gatorade/ice tea bottle, adding water to it , then quickly putting the cap on and tossing it into the nearest occupied porta-john. Good times, good times. On one deployment we literally ate MREs 3 times a day for 3 months straight until they finally imported some cooks and put up a DFAC. Us smarter folks would go outside the wire and trade stuff with the locals for fresh food which we'd then cook to near charcoal to make sure it was safe to eat. Now you know why pretty much every ground-pounder, dirt-dart, mechanic, and dumbass tanker knows how to build a grill out of an old barrel.

I bought a case of surplus military MREs a few months back. It was alright, but I did get one item that was amazing. A cranberry first strike bar. It is by far the best energy bar I ever had. If those were sold in store I'd buy them all the time. The only thing that was not good about it was that it was super chewy so I had a sore jaw after. Also they had some of the best peanut butter I've ever had. EDIT: I still had a packet of the instant coffee, so I tried it like you. Don't do this, Oh my god, don't do this. I regret so much right now. It was instant type 2 spray dried.

Marine here. The Southwestern Style beef with Black Beans is one of the best MRE's we fight over some MRE's because they are so good lol. Now if you want to try one that is straight nasty you have to try Creamy Spinach Fettuccine. No one will eat that MRE like no one. The MRE's we get are years old where the Candy is expired 3 to 4 years. We play games to see who has the more expired candy, we still eat it anyways because we still want candy.

When I was in the field training I would make coffee dip. Use the napkins they provide and get the coffee ingredients and BOOM! Up and ready to go.
