I work at Blick and every time someone is in the bookbinding section I’m like “Have you watched SeaLemon??!” And geek out if they have, thanks for helping artists everywhere!

WOW. Your Michael's is awesome! Ours is a crap heap. It's always a mess and all the shelves are bare. What we obviously need is a Blick's! 😁 I gel print a lot and I only use one brayer. Just run it off on a scrap piece of paper between uses--then use that paper for collage too! 👍

2:30 have you tried sticking it to the inner wall of your cup? Swishing your brushes at the side of the cup helps the pigment sink to the bottom without stirring up what’s already settled.

Oh! I didn't think of that. I'll give it a try next time I paint!

oh how i LOVED this!!! i had not realized that BLICK has actual physical stores as i always thought up until this video they were online only🙃🤪🙃... but anyway YES!!! please do more of these, pleez!!! i also totally enjoyed when you went into that high-end stationery store a little while back!!! i live in a VERY rural area, and so it's so nice to get a sense of being "out and about" shopping "with you"!!!😆👍👍

I got to take a Gelli print class last year, and half the fun was just finding fun textures out of any old materials - we used paper doilies, mesh fabric, etc. Anything with a texture can work! We also played with using acrylic paint pens (they can hang around for a bit after using on the plate, so be warned) and even baby powder and pan pastels for different effects. Also, sometimes you got cooler effects from the "ghost print" of the second or third pull off the plate when you're cleaning off extra paint!

Love BLICK's! ^^ While I unfortunately haven't been to my closest BLICK art store in a while (takes a long time to drive/ride public transit to it), it's always been fun to go to in my experience and still draw in some of the sketchbooks I've bought from there too!

I agree with the other comment, you will most likely get better results with a soft braver and I also prefer speedball. That being said, you can totally stick with 1 braver. I have a bunch, but that’s a “me” problem, lol. I actually use a page in my sketchbook to roll off the braver between colors, and love some of the backgrounds that can create. Happy printing! 😊. Ooops, edit to add tell Kona hi and give him some ear rubs for me ❤

Jennifer, I live in a dry climate, too, and you might want to invest in some golden open medium. Just mix a couple of drops into the paint. It helps slow the paint drying time. Of course, if you have golden open paints, those are great also. My favorite brayers are the speedball white rubber, which Blick should have. You can get inexpensive sponge brayers at any box paint department. They are fun for something different.

Gelli printing is so much fun to experiment with! You can use all sort of things to get interesting textures: bubble wrap, fabric with a really loose weave, string, yarn, the end of an empty toilet paper roll (makes neat 3D shapes when you drag it on the gelli plate) etc. You can use pretty much anything soft that doesn't damage the gelli plate. I was at an art gallery last Summer where a gelli plate artist had used old jeans and lace to press on the gelli plates, to get prints that looked like that. They were very cool. Just remember to wash the jeans before the paint dries so you can reuse them in your art. xp I also recommend trying out what you can get when you cut out pictures out of magazines. Cut out a picture from a magazine, put paint on your gelli plate, press the magazine picture on your gelli plate, remove magazine picture, press a fresh paper on to the gelli plate, remove paper and the original picture should now be on your paper. You can also pre-press something on your paper before transferring the magazine picture on your paper, so there's something on the background. You can also use the paint that's left over on the magazine picture and press that straight onto a paper. Layering different colors and textures is the way to go, but it's sometimes difficult to know when to stop and what's too much. If people want to try out gelli printing without buying their own plate right away, you can make your own with powdered gelatin from the grocery store and water. It will just go bad after a day or two in room temperature, or a couple of weeks in the fridge. But you can at least try it out.

Always fun to see art shops in other countries (I'm in the UK). I'm glad though that the yarn doesn't have a uk equivalent (that I know of) as it would have been bought otherwise. All my gel/gelli plate purchases have been online so it was fun to see them in store. For the size of gel plate you bought a single 4" brayer would be adequate. I've got red and blue handled ones by Essdee which work well for me (I've used the blue one, which is a soft rubber roller, more). Thank you for an interesting shopping trip.

Interesting to see one of the yarns made up as a sample in the shop! That’s a great idea for multicolour yarn because you never quite know how the colours will look when it’s knitted/crocheted. My favourite cardigan (in my profile pic) was like that. I expected it to be random patches of colour but it ended up as stripes. Fortunately I like it, but it wasn’t what I expected. I enjoyed this video, thank you. Kona is looking adorable as always!

I have 2 Essdee soft rubber brayers (blue handle) and a small Abig one. Not sure how available they are where you are but they are very affordable and easy to find in the UK. I enjoy lino cut printing but would really love to try monoprinting too, especially using gel plates. They look so much fun! 😊

Oh my goodness….gelli printing…do you realize what you have done??! It’s SOO addictive!! 😂 you’re going to have such a blast. You really don’t need more than one brayer. It’s always good to have some extra papers to roll off paint onto or even a journal to roll into can create a background for you to come back to later.

Wow! Your Joann's has tons of paper! Ours has zip! But then again, they also seem to be the most expensive of the big three in our area (Hobby Lobby and Michael's are the other two) so that's probably a good thing for me. Great video!

I LOVE Blick. I get to one more often on vacation than the one technically closer to me (but traffic and parking is cray cray). I'm excited to see what you do with the Gelli plate. I have an old school Speedball set with sturdy plastic handle and 4 interchangeable rollers from like 20 + years ago, when the full set was less than just the plain singleton. lol You'll be fine with any Amazon du Jour offer. I'd probably go with a soft rubber,. I think for reference only- Speedball- tan is regular rubber, black is more firm rubber. But also look at the handles. (sorry if I'm being too specific) the handle on my interchangeable is not the most comfortable- compared to a more solid contoured handle on other brayers. It's probably not important. But as I age- I'm all about ergonomics. lol Oh and sometimes Dollar Tree has those multi-edged weird texture scrapers in the cake decorating/ party area. Sometimes they're on hanging tabs on the endcaps, usually near the frosting knives and bags. Just fun textures to drag through paint on the Gelli plate. As well as hair picks and combs 😊 I'm so excited to see what you make! oh look another novel. I can't help it. You just make me remember what I love about being creative and all the accoutrements.

You could have skipped the paint brush cleaner. Dollar Tree has silicon trivets that are deeply textured and make great brush cleaners. They also make great stamps for just stamping directly or for using on a gelli plate.

I don't really know what brayer to get. But I'll admit that I pretty much got most of the plate and tools from the Dylusion line. I was watching Dyan show her products, and got addicted. Needless to say, I got all the stuff, worked with it for a bit, but never really got around to the Gelli plate yet... one of these days... I hope you have fun with it. Some of the things I've seen people do... just wow. :D

Hullo Jen, Brayers are a personal preference and I have used soft and firm! It can also be determined what kind of paper your using and what your inking on! I love my paint Puck! I have one in every water cup and even my oil paint rinse or brush cleaner! I think you paid to much! I got 6 pucks for $20.00 so I suggest you look around for a better price or a sale! I have a thought, why not feature the local art store? I believe that the local art shop closed down 10 years or so ago, they simply couldn’t compete with the Joanne’s and Michael’s after they moved in.😢 Is there a local store in your area? The closest place to me is 2 1/2 hours away and they are just a mom n pop shop in a tourist area just outside a National park! So not really a place for locals to buy supplies!
