Darn it, @SeaLemonDIY when we read the title of this video we were all "Harumph! Cheap paint? Why I never." but when we saw where you were going with this, we took back our "harumph". There's a long tradition of artists pushing the limits of materials and discovering ways to use supplies that exceed their original purpose, and we are so impressed with the results you're getting! We had a thought about the tissue paper: You could layer it over entire sheets of paper using wheatpaste or thinned glue, let it dry and press it like your other collage stock. Then, you'd have the slight texture and transparency of tissue in sheets you can cut!

Tim Holtz scissors are fab for paper and fabric. Micro-serrated titanium blades. Very comfortable handles.

I have the Tim Holtz microserrated ones myself, they will not be that great for cutting paper as she does. I personally always forget which side has the serrated age, end up cutting paper that has that over the edge and it doesnt match the paper that does not have it. Don't you get this problem? I have ended up leaving those scissors for more heavy cutting for mixed media and Sizzix put out some very similar/nearly identical scissors that are mint colored and don't have that serrated edge that leave indentations on the paper. Tissue paper provides an interesting transparency when glued down. It layers beautifully. Maybe try a collage with just tissue paper to see what it does. I would recommend a slightly watered down Elmer's or Mod Podge glue brushed on the page, then put the tissue paper down and brush more glue over it. That will help with the problem you were running into.

Gel prints make great collage paper. Lots of texture etc. especially if you use stencils and masks or texture plates. I used to just tear up painted pieces of paper and then try to make a picture with the shapes I found in the bits of torn paper. Quite the challenge.

I have both the EK Success Cutter Bug and the Tim Holtz Tonic Studio precision cutting scissors. I find the Cutter Bug better for fussy cutting because the microserrated edge on the Tim Holtz scissors leaves the paper with a textured edge when I want a clean edge.

Hi *Jennifer.* Hands down the finest scissors I've ever used are the *Japaense Kai scissors.* Needle-sharp, you get get a precision cut even with the very tip of the blades. Happy snipping!

I know it seems a bit backwards but I usually find that the bigger the blades of the scissors, the smaller, fussier things I can cut. My favorite kind are those old school butcher scissors? All metal, because they can always be resharpened and easily cleaned, also can be held in a variety of hand positions for different work.

Some of the best fussy cutting scissors I've tried are Cutter Bee by Ek Success. They're extremely sharp and have a nice pointed end to get into really small corners and around intricate designs. 👍🏾❤️

Oh, this take me back to my childhood's schoolprojects, collages are superfun for children. regarding tissue paper, we did tear the paper up by hand, precission isn't tissue paper's force, you can layer it up to create 3d effects, but requires a lot of glue, like borderline papermache. School glue work better for it, than glue sticks.

A hack I saw on the channel superraedizzle is that she used corn flour to thicken cheap paint make sure to add the right amount of flour so that the consistency is like a little thinner than toothpaste. It really works well so mostly instead of more expensive paint I use that .I love the new style of your channel .

Yes!! I actually used that a few times..and it worked. I was able to finish a present with "cheap " paints. Added baking soda..(didn't have corn flour.) And it matched perfectly. Nobody knew. ❤

My scissors always used to hurt my hands. I finally analyzed where my hands were specifically hurting and wrapped yarn around the scissors in those corresponding areas. Feels much better now. Also, I hated the so-called collages done by so many journal makers which were just bits of left-over digitals glued to paper, so I really appreciate this new-to-me type of collage meant to represent something real - WOW!

I have very tiny scissors that I used to cut paper with to do fine detail work with. They are the best. They kind of look like scissors you use to cut your nails with. I want to say they were scissors my grandma used for sewing when she cut extra thread on fabric. Buy yourself some tiny sharp scissors! I been using mine for years. I love them so much! I get perfect cuts every time. You might find these scissors in the sewing section. They are just made out of metal. They are tinier than what your using and super comfortable to cut with. Check out scissors like that.

Oh my goodness, I'm making a quilted wall hanging for a friend who lives in Santa Fe, and I'm doing a cactus with flowers in applique using melted crayon. It looks very similar to the one you worked on here! Thanks for showing how you made the spines with the pink crayon. I was looking for how to do that in my quilt. Great video--thanks!

For scissors try Gingher(the lightweight scissors, not the big steel shears)or Nakabayashi(coated blades that resist sticky buildup from glue or tape). JoAnn sometimes has the lightweight Gingher scissors and all the Nakabayashi scissors you can get from JetPens. They stay sharp and the handles aren’t as clunky as Fiskars can be so they’ll suit cutting small bits of paper. I use mine when I’m sewing and they work well for cutting curves.

Enjoyed the video I have used the non toxic mixed paints from The Works in the UK and found them to be good especially mixing the colours together get lovely shades and only cost a pound each for a decent size bottle 😊 you don't need to spend a lot of money to get good effects especially if your on a budget

For the tiniest bits and the most control, I recommend embroidery scissors. Keep them sharp, and keep separate pairs for paper and embroidery. Also, pinking shears of various patterns could literally give you a creative edge to your art! Thanks for the inspiration and happy crafting!

For fussy cutting scissors, you might try asian-style sewing scissors which look like tongs but with cutting blades at the end instead of grabbers. They are small and sprung open so less fatigue. Other folks like the crane or bird shaped embroidery scissors for small details. Happy scissoring! ✂️

maybe exacto knife and self healing mat would be best for small corners and shapes and the fiskar scissors for general work. I also really like scissors marketed for fabric. they're just nice and big and stay sharper imo.

Yes! Sorry Kona, but I love paper talk!! Work on your own book of desert flora and fauna and critters!!!! What a great idea! I think your cactus came out beautiful! It's inspired me to concentrate on what we have here! In South Tx....cactus! LOL among other trees that I love, mulberry, mountain laurel, passionflower vine, sunflowers, etc..... With tissue paper, since I've read it's not recyclable....the stash I have, I make paper flowers, and also something more fun, I place mix elmer's glue with water, to dilute it, I spread it all over and then place string, dried vines, petals, etc.....and glue over that ... place another sheet of tissue over and glue over that....let dry...I have used some pieces in other works of art and also to cover over windows (not one that absorbs a lot of heat)....something fun to work on.... :) Hope you and your family are doing well. The best, most-comfortable scissors I have ever used are Fiskars brand spring-loaded scissors which look like garden snips. The ones with gold-colored blades work best and last longer, but the ones with silver-colored blades cost half as much. I get them in Amazon because the local craft stores stopped carrying them.

I use the fiskars “razoredge micro-tip easy action” scissors 5” for a lot of my detail collage work; they’re quite comfortable, get really detailed (they don’t do that thing where it continues tearing the paper a little bit past the tip of the scissor if you know what I mean) I’ve been using them for a few years now on various materials and they’re still sharp, fairly cheap for fiskars too!

For scissors, I know a lot of people like cutter bee scissors for fussy cutting, or if you really like nicer grips, the Tim Holtz scissors with Tonic is really nice. I have a pair of serrated edge for general cutting (and it works for paper too, one side is smoother while one has a little bit of texture), and a smaller pair of the 'fabric' non-serrated for fussy cutting.

I also really like craft paint, some have mixed in opaque pigments to make actually transparent colours opaque and with these a few layers are enough to get an opaque surface. craft paint usually has such a consistency that brush strokes are hardly visible and i don't have to dilute them extra, and finding out this water paint ratio is sometimes difficult. I like to use them to paint a kind of pop art pictures and to paint objects with it. Artist high flow paint is too expensive for me, and i don't always feel like diluting my high body paints for it.

I use a Tonic micro serrated scissor, Tim Holtz brand that works well. I've never noticed if it leaves a textured edge which may or may not matter for what you do. I also have a similar looking handled non- serrated Kai brand scissor I have had for -EV-er. I do use a similar spring loaded Fiskar like yours. Great for simple cuts, like tiny printed leaves for a miniature room kit. But can still fatigue on more complex cuts. I have large hands, not man sized by any means but definitely not petite. I might also be a scissor hoarder but I also sew. 😂

I believe that so many acrylic paints are the same as you cannot get a superior pigment load because you can only add just so much to the acrylic polymer. Many acrylic paints are cheaper because of added water, not less pigment! I ahve been amazed by Ace of Clay, Anthony who uses Folk Art paints! His use shows that you do not need to empty your bank account to buy decent acrylic paints! I think if you used ModPodge on top of your tissue papers it would stiffen up and you could cut (better?) shapes or more workable "papers" from tissue paper. Best of Luck!

The kind of tissue you use can make a difference. "Art tissue" will easily bleed its color as you glue it down, so that it creates a glaze of color. If you use acrylic soft gel gloss medium as a glue it will fix the color bleed when it dries allowing you to layer glazed colors as you go. I know gloss is not a favorite finish for paper work, but it can be deglossed once you've finished your picture using fine steel wool. I'm working with paper a lot these days, dying it with coffee, tea, spray acrylic, or watercolor, and using whatever paper I can find from my stash including vintage papers like blueprint paper, tracing paper (makes beautiful translucent layers!), and junk mail envelopes, old dictionary pages, packaging papers, etc. Most recent find was a partial pad of palette papers with a thin layer of plastic on one side that I have painstakingly peeled off leaving a delicate, translucent paper that takes dye readily and creates the most satisfyingly rumpled appearance.... ok, I have an obsession with paper sounds and textures, LOL!

I really love fussy cutting stuff, unfortunately I also have really bad carpal tunnel in both of my hands. Normal scissors can be painful. Tim Holtz has a pair that are small for fussy cutting and are semi-ergonomic. They work well for me. I've also heard good things about the Cutter Bee Precision Scissors by EK Success.

Fiskars makes good scissors for ‘fussy cutting’. Go back to JoAnn’s and try some - pick them up and put your hand in them and see how they feel. I have several different ones and often grab the little ones for fussy cutting. P.S. I am super jealous of your huge and fabulous Michael’s and JoAnn’s! Our Michael’s are about half that size and our JoAnn’s are just really sad!

The Tim Holz scissor series is worth a try, great grip, not so painful and many different sizes, the titanium blade makes them last and very sharp, cuts practically anything, they cost a bit, but I have had mine for at least 8 years now could be more. I don't really like promoting big companies but.....😂❤

It's going to sound kind of weird, but I was walking through Michaels around Christmastime last year and they had near the front these little kits of tiny office supplies. And in that kit, there was a pair of almost comically tiny scissors. When I first got it, I was thinking to myself that there was no way in hell I'm going to use these. Until I was working on decorating a planner spread and needed to cut some of my thinner washi tape. And they were so perfect and so precise and I started using them for cutting up my die cuts to be a little smaller to fit in my planner. I mean, sure, the stapler (and remover!) and the little tape dispenser and all the tiny paper clips are cute, BUT those comically tiny scissors? Those take the cake. It was probably $3 for the whole kit. Worth it just for the little scissors.
