Let's grow a Zebra Plant! - Aphelandra squarrosa

I grew one of these many years ago and killed it. Lets give it another shot :) These plant love their water however they don't want to sit in water.

I have one of these that I rescued from a dying $1 shelf, and I've found it actually quite easy to care for. I didn't know what it was until just a couple days ago and I'm surprised by how many people say it's a difficult plant! Mine does not require a ton of water like you say, it's happy with a weekly watering, and in the 6 months I've had it I've never seen it show distress, only a flourishing recovery from the scraggly thing it was when I got it. It's in a bright warm window that gets early morning to early afternoon direct sunlight then shaded light through the day. It likes moderately moist soil but stays happy for a few days as the top dries out. I've never seen a plant make such a vigorous, quick, and beautiful recovery as this one and of the 64 plants in my house, it's amongst the most reliably happy plants I have.

I have a zebra plant, it's never flowered, I'm mainly happy to keep it alive. It's lost all it's leaves a few times!

I have one of these and its lost most of its bottom leaves after curling up and turning brown. All my other plants seem to do well with my watering schedule but this one is a real drama queen. So I thought Id read up about it and found out that Im not watering it enough of course and I decided it needs to go into a bigger pot. Its already in a sunny spot but Im thinking about moving it into one that is just bright but not sunny, sunny. Our office will do I think. I also just learned today that this plant flowers so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for your fun and informative video. Now I have to go look up why we say happy as a clam.

Your awkwardness is probably why people watch. It's real and you are being yourself. I learned that the Zebra plant just loves to be wet. It's in a 4" pot and I literally water it every day. Where did you find the watering system?

I bought a "Tropical Plant" from a greenhouse that was grown at Burnaby Lakes Greenhouse. I had to look it up because I had no idea what it was given their generic name. But I do believe I bought a Zebra plant yesterday.

I got a spray bottle. I use tap water and set it on full spray ; not stream. I spray the plant once an hour. Light spray, It comes back to life every day.

I water mine every single day. so far so good. I have never had a plant that you have to water everyday its crazy. We will see. I did give it to much sun and it got really droopy. put it back in the house and it purked right back up. it is a weird but beautiful plant

+Gardening at Douentza Yea if you are a lazy waterer this might not be a good fit... However a self watering pot would help a lot :)

It does fine with a moderate watering once a week in my experience, that's nothing crazy. This guy may live in a place with low humidity? Mine does not crave the kind of watering he describes at all.

Hello, how is this plant progressing? I live in Minneapolis and have had one through two springs and one winter. I water every day in the summer and it does really well. The dry winters are another issue. I had lost quite a few big branches due to lack of humidity. The plant is up and running again this summer, but it has ground to make up in terms of branching. I did plant mine in a rather deep ceramic, so some of the lagging growth may just be the plant having to grow into the pot. The new leaves look beautiful. I have it in full sun by about 3-4pm until dark. This winter I will try a different warm room with a baby humidifier. Hope for the best. I really have enjoyed Your channel for many years now. My plant is actually standing still at the moment... it got infested with scale... I didn't notice right away and the plant was really set back... it is still quite small but it's still alive thankfully. you're right... it can be really difficult to keep these plants happy over winter. but you are on the right path with the humidifier ... and maybe a brighter window for the short days.

I started growing new leaves and they recent browned and fell off to touch. What should I do? I keep relocating. I am getting new leaves. But browning keeps happening. I currently have in the restroom on the toilet tank. slightly have the curtain open. I keep the house at a constant "heat" 70 degrees.

Depending on where you live... and the intensity of your sun... it might require full sun during the winter months. also make sure to keep the soil moist but not soggy. if they are too wet they can drop leaves... and if they are too dry they will wilt and loose leaves.

I have a Angel Wing Begonia that wants to be flooded once a month, and have adapted using a pot with no drainage hole and a PVC standpipe to aerate the roots. I'm curious if it would help with plants like this that want to be wet all the time. I might try to find one and test it out.

I don't have a video on this unfortunately... you should be able to just take stem cuttings with a few nodes... they should root either in water or soil... if you go the soil route... keep it moist... and maybe cover it to keep in the humidity

I put too much fertilizer in mine and the leaves turn brown n burnt on the edges how do i save her, should i let the roots sit in water until all the dirt comes off and replant her in new soil ? If so what soil should i use lmk what i should do😢

It might need more water. The second they get too dry they droop... but if you have it sitting in water then it could be root rot.

+Claudia Hightower they like a bright indirect spot in the house... away from any heat register. They like to be moist but not soggy...this is a tough one to figure out... I think that daily watering would be too much.

I water mines 2 to 3 tines a week. Don't put oy directly in front of your window. Im thr summer tjey like misting if you under water it, it will go limp, put it between other plants. When it gets other stalks you can cut it below the nodes were old leaves were and out thrm in water anf start a new one. When u water it make sure you see water coming out of the bottom so you know you watered it if not it will wilt and drop leaves. Good luck. And fertilize once a month 😉

They can be tricky... could be too wet... or too dry they like to always be moist... best to use a free draining soil and water it regularly... letting the top inch of the pot dry before re watering... if its in a large pot maybe wait for the top 3 or 4 inches to dry....

how do you root them? Mr plant started to die because my car used the pot as a liter box :/ I cut it out and it's survived in a glass of water but I'm getting no roots.. it's been like this for a month now and The Roots are not there and the leaves are starting to look burnt help
