G3 actors have the choice of using either Sprite Hands or Bone Hands, and each has their own benefits. Sprite Hands allow you to draw all your own custom hands which are individual sprites, whereas Bone Hands allow for the movement and animation of individual fingers and the use of preset hand gestures which you can merge between.
Currently our actor rig of Larry Stickman only has one hand sprite, the Normal sprite. Now the quickest way to give Larry a functional set of hands is to bring them in from another actor. So let’s do that first!
The only thing you really need to concern yourself with is the colours of the hand-set you are about to swap to Larry are close to his skin tone. If they’re not, you could easily fix that using SVG Colour Management, but for now, go pick yourself a character who has a of hands that match Larry’s skin-tone as best as possible.
Whichever character you have chosen, take them into Composer Mode. Open the Content tab of your Content Manager, and then select the Body tab and open the Hands folder. Left click one of your actors hands to select it and Save them to your Content Manager. You can name them at this point as well.
TIP: It’s always a good idea to flick through your new set of Hand Sprites to make sure they are all positioned where you want and sized correctly. Should they not be, you now know how to make those changes!
TIP: When you make changes to an actor in Composer Mode, save them as a separate actor file (ctTBactor) from the original, so you can always return to your starting point.
Return to Stage Mode and bring Larry into Composer Mode. Select one of his hands, choose the Content tab, followed by the Hands tab and open the Hands folder where you will find your freshly saved new set of hands. Choose Apply and they will automatically be imported to Larry, giving him a wonderful new selection of hands.
