Let's Look at Sonic Free Riders!

Kinect makes everyone look sexy. Because Microsoft had to make a motion control peripheral, Sonic had to join in on the fun. And it was terrible.
I wished I could've done more with the game, but my place just isn't suited for Kinect gaming. One day I might return to this, but don't hold your breath. Besides, we have a colorful future ahead of us.

The Kinect is something I find fascinating in retrospect. We all know how the Wii tried to push motion control in almost every game, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that motion controls for Wii games were being relegated for only some sections of a game, or were not reserved only for party type games, like developers wisened up and realized motion controls is good for some things, but not everything. Same thing happened with the DS in its early years when stylus controls were more obtrusive than they are today. The Kinect, by its very design, can't become wiser. The hardware itself works fine, the problem is that it's such a step up from the controls the Wii remote uses that it's just so much harder to program software for. I'm always fascinated by developers getting enticed by a novel concept and ignoring long term consequences.

I have no problem with these voice actors, it's the writing in this game that's terrible. Everybody is such an asshole in this game for no good reason. And while I think Sonic Colors is incredibly boring (not bad, just boring) I'm looking forward to Clement's thoughts on the game.

+NintenDex This is easily the best voice cast yet, Tails actually sounds like a kid, sonic's egotistical tone adds more to his character, Knuckles is just kinda standard but still good, Amy's voice while annoying is still fitting for her character, Silver and Blaze sound the same, vector, charmy and cream are a good mixture of both old voices, Rouge finally fits her age and Shadow while it sounds like he's trying too hard still fits him, I like it more than the 4 kids one at least

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: Honestly, I like the new Sonic voices. Amy still sounds like Minnie Mouse, and Omochao as rule of thumb must sound annoying (granted this voice actually sounds like she's trying), but otherwise, I kind of like the rest of the new voices. I like Jason more as Shadow, but not by much. And I personally think Roger is the all-around best Sonic so far, even if his scripts suck a lot.

Not at all. Roger Craig Smith is a better actor and I think his voice is a better fit for Sonic. Griffith was great in _Unleashed_ and _Black Knight_, but those are the only games he didn't fail in. I never had any problems with Griffith's Shadow, though.

+RisingJericho I think each of the actors of Sonic gave something special along with something crappy for their legacy as him. Ryan Drummond had the right voice attitude and upbeat voice. And only problem is the voice directing was awful for the Adventure games and by the time it was a little polished in Sonic Heroes, he'd be replaced a game later. Jason Griffith gave Sonic a more heroic, freedom loving personality. And we got "YOU'RE TOO SLOW!!" and "COME ON STEP IT UP!" from him as well in Brawl. But his problem was his legacy was voicing him in most of the worst to mediocre Sonic games until Sonic Unleashed. Roger Craig Smith made Sonic a little more snarky and sarcastic, I think mostly to modernize his character a bit more. It took a while for most of the fans to warm up to him, but he had already done some great voice acting for other iconic game characters. And his voice acting was decent in the Sonic Boom series. The in-game audio queues and the games overall were just awful.

They may not have had the greatest debut in this game, but I personally think the current voice actors for Sonic and the gang are the best we've had so far, especially Roger Craig Smith as Sonic and Kate Higgins at Tails. (The latter has seemingly been replaced by his Boom actress Colleen Villard. Honestly, I couldn't even tell the difference. I guess the replacement was that good.) Also, HELL YES!!! Sonic Colors is next! I can't wait to see that! 2nd only to Sonic Generations for my favorite Sonic game. :D

Seeing how this was the last Riders game, at least it brought us the Babylon Rouges. I like that Jet, Wave and Storm are characters that SEGA try to keep around. Mainly just because I like that there are birds in Sonic's world.

Idk why, I actually had a blast with this. The menus were easy to navigate for me the controls generally speaking were pretty good (Though any missions that involve rail jumping or power can go fuck themselves). I find the main difference with how people have found the game is mainly how the kinect is set up. Having the kinect so it can get a top looking down on the chest down to feet seems to work for me but idk. I can't really see Free Riders as bad (Except having some CGI cutscenes and an actual plot would be nice tbh...) since I have a blast with it.

There are three Kinect games that I recommend, Kinectimals, Kinect Disneyland Adventures and Kinect Rush: a Disney and Pixar Adventure. Update: The two last games are now available on Xbox One and Windows 10. So, getting a Kinect for your Xbox 360 is no longer necessary since now you can play them on your Xbox One using the controller, as well as on Windows 10. I think that's the better alternative.

What pains me most about Riders' failure is that I had visions of a game just like this as a kid: Sonic and friends racing and doing battle on boards, like F-Zero meets Snowboard Kids. When older me sees the dream become a reality, only to find it's just the slippery Sonic Adventure sandboarding stage regurgitated as a racing game... three times, no less... well, you'll understand why I didn't wanna touch Sonic Racing Transformed at first, despite it being a solid apology. Oh my God, what the fuck! I actually got good with the controls with my play time enough to get a lot of achievements. This is easily the worst in the Riders series. No fully animated cutscenes, weird motion control, and unresponsive motion control. This game really would havs been much better using a controller. Controllers (or keyboard) are best. Still awesome to see a Clement video in my subscription box. Keep being awesome Clement!

How to play sonic free riders. First, you must have plenty of room. In your house. Preferably one with a lack of furniture. Second, you must completely disregard the controls. If you want to in the direction you are facing, hold both of your arms out, and if you want to turn in the opposite way either have a really flexible back, or switch directions and hold your arms out. Third, whenever you get a powerup of any kind. Flail your arms around like a a madman and hope it works. To do tricks, preemptively jump and 50% of the time you might be able to do a trick. To grind on rails, hope that the jump registers and lean DAMMIT! To fly, hold your arms out to the point to where they will fall off, and for power, flail your arms around and it will work 20% of the time if you're lucky. Hmm... I wonder why people hate this game so much. I can't see it. (That was sarcasm for those who don't get it)

I remember the first time I got stuck on the first Knuckles mission on that snow stage where you had to punch some things to go faster (you either had to punch a certain number of those things or complete the lap within the time limit...I forget which one but who gives a shit). THE DAMN GESTURE NEVER WORKED! (until I practiced it a bit in the tutorial mode, but even then it's still awful) Also are you playing Sonic Rush Thre--I mean, the DS version of Colors - alongside the Wii version, a la Unleashed? Or will that wait until afterwards?

I don't know if he still holds it but my friend was at some point holding the world records for a number of courses on the leaderboards of this game. Possibly by factor of being the only one who gave enough of a shit to try (he is/was a big fan of Jet the Hawk) but if you see Weirdo on the leaderboards, that's him. He said that for whatever reason it worked a lot better for him than it did most people.

Wow, just hearing the currant cast in this game, yeah, they came a long way, some even got replaced by time. There was a time where everyone hated Roger Craig Smith as Sonic, Kirk Thornton as Shadow and a few more to point out, but now, I don't really hear those rants all the time anymore, not even in the Twitter Q&As. So, it seems that the ones that used to be hated did improve enough to finally have those angry fans shut up, I think it's all thanks to Lego Dimensions where they got to say lines from past games.

Kinda hilarious that in the commercial at the end everybody is in an empty storage unit lit up by flood lights. Makes me wonder if they actually thought that's the typical home entertainment system setup. They probably did, otherwise why make a peripheral that requires a spacious, well lit room in order to function?

The only time i've had fun with this game is when i'd play it with a friend and we'd rag on it the entire time. Of course we looked ridiculous playing tag mode but how could you not?
