One of the best mage tower builds I have seen so far. The idea that you can mess up the project pretty much at any stage and all goes to waste gave me chills every now and then. Great improvement over the water as well and not many people know this but learning Houdini is pretty hard task plus the renders takes a lot of time as well. So cheers on that achievement as well. I guess you will start mixing your builds with some Houdini effects in the future like the mage summon tornado or so. Anyway looking for it ^^
@RealTerrainHobbies
@RealTerrainHobbies 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lazar! Yeah, Houdini was a big challenge to learn alright. I've actually since not renewed my license as that has to be done yearly, and have switched over to Blender. It does a decent job with particls and has a fairly nice render engine. If I ever felt I needed some nice water effects again or some other really detailed effect like sand, snow, fire, lava etc, I'd definitely switch back to Houdini. 😎 A tornado would be sweet too and could probably be achieved nicely with Blender. Not as detailed as Houdini but still not too bad. :)

This is more than "all right." It's absolutely fantastic! As for the stone lacking detail, nah, it's just weathered from the storms lashing it down through the ages. i have never played a tabletop version of DND but projects like this make me wish I had. In fact, I haven't played DND since it was first done back when computers ran only a shareware version where every character was simply an X on a black background and dungeon walls were merely brackets. Funny thing about it, though, if I was really immersed in the game, my imagination took over and everything became "real." Love the wizard keeping a watchful eye on your building progress.

Never have understood why a wizard would want to have a tower. They are old, all those stairs would suck. I've climbed a lighthouse, which is similar in shape and size. It was a 177 steps to the top, had to stop and catch my breath halfway up. Great looking craft.

I really love your self critiquing. You do an excellent job on a certain problem, but because it’s your work and it’s not perfect in your eyes, you scrap it until it’s perfect for you. Even though the pieces you create all seem like wonderful pieces of work. If the ideas for different methods that you scrapped were done by someone else I’m sure you would think of it as great work, but when it’s coming from something you created you are able to see it for what you want your standard of work to be and what you know you’re capable of. Bravo to you sir, you’re an inspiration and a wonderful artist. I just now am recently starting to get into set building right now thanks to you!

Really amazing build. One thing that seemed a bit incongruous (just my own opinion of course :)) is the tree. On a wind- and wave-swept rocky place like that, a tree is likely to be bent and gnarled (like many bonsai trees), rather than a large, up-right, leafy tree...
@RealTerrainHobbies
@RealTerrainHobbies 5 жыл бұрын
Great observation and yeah you're right. Would have been a lot harder to get that look finding a small plant that formed in that sort of shape as well. In the end though, it's a fantasy setting so maybe the wizards magic gave the tree that added strength to withstand the winds :)

the hot glue actually works now days,, I used it to hold up a light fixture for 3 yrs ,to where the fixture only needed to support its own weight , which was brass. It held until I took it down this yer for the new ceiling light fan with remote. I like to use loctite glue,, it rubberizes and can be used on so many different things,, and even repair a screw hole,, once it dries it rubberizes the spot with a really good bond.

Hot glue: good to hold pieces together while another slower glue dries. The formula was changed in the last couple of decades, so directions for old kits might say to use it, but no! A year or two and things will start falling apart (in a nice climate. In some place like coastal Texas with the extreme heat, humidity, and the constant ionization of the air indoors by the AC, you'll see failures even faster. Not sure how elevation affects glues...) Anyway, the tower is awesome

I would have loved to see a bit of sealife down by the water - seaweed, starfish, banacles and limpets, mussels et c. Maybe some seashells. I don’t intend this as critique, merely as inspiration for future projects. Also, set the rest of that oak veneer in a sunny window for a year and let the UV light work its magic, I think you might like the weathered silvery or lead grey of old oak. Especially down by the water or any place where it’s exposed to the elements.

this turned out great. just a suggestion for future - when you do a multi video project, add part 1, part 2 etc to the title. it would make it a lot easier to find the parts of the project. I was surfing KZbin for videos and ended up clicking part 3 of this build. it was very difficult finding part 1, 2 and then 4 in the list of all your other videos.

I quite enjoyed watching your build on this! However, I strongly suggest shooting this at 60p, or 30p. It feels like 24p, which is far to juddery for this kinda thing. Also a smaller aperture would let us see more of the final project, instead of a razor thin focal plane. But regardless, it was quite fun to watch your process!

Yeah agreed! Sorry, I don't know why he never came to mind. This would make a good Merlin's tower I think. More suited to him for sure.

Hot glue is better used as a supporting glue. Use a longer setting stronger glue on a piece then use a bit of hot glue around the area too. The hot glue creates a fast bond to hold it in place until the longer set glue can take hold. It’s not real great as a glue on it’s own but it’s an amazing temporary and fast hold glue!

Hot glue is not designed for structural use. It’s designed to stick wires to PCBs and temporary quick fixation to then have your hands free to properly attached what you want.

Thank you for your videos. It's really relaxing to hear you narrate and work, and your choice of music and editing makes a great experience while I feel overwhelmed from quarantine and stressed from work and hobbies, or just plain doing nothing sometimes. I realize this vid is a year old now so someone has probably mentioned it but high heat hot glue should hold up okay and not fall apart. The stuff at home depot is also supposed to hold up pretty well, but I dislike how all of it makes spider web string messes :P Most people/stores carry multi temp which can melt in a hot car or attic. But your more permanent epoxy glue feels better, and I've since moved onto using contact cement where I can :)

Thanks for the tips. I have started using hot glue on my more recent projects. Hope you are doing better with the quarantine. it has been hard on all of us. :/ Hang in there!

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but a little wood working tip. A hot iron is the most controlled and easiest way to activate the glue on veneer. That's why furniture makers have an iron in their wood shop. Just FYI. 👍🏻

I can't speak for models like this as I'm pretty new to it (binge watching all the terrain videos I can find atm to help with making an HO scale trainset for my dad) but I've used hot glue in prop costume making, but it just depends on what you use it on. It's perfect for EVA/craft foam, but with some surfaces it'll just come off really easily :) I guess it's the same as other glues, works great on some things but terrible on others! Absolutely loving this project, amazing video!

I had a bad start with epoxy glue as it did not want to bond a sculpture I was working on. It may have been due to a lack of experience or just a bad batch. Hot glue is good for materials such as fabrics and plastics. Does not work for hard surfaces and meltable projects. I love wood glue as it makes good skins (effects), has a good hold. versatile and can become transparent. Just keep experimenting and you will always learn something new about something you thought would not work in the past.

Im blown away. Actually Thoroughly enjoyed the whole build and the whole story you took the time to tell. Im glad it was a long video. A cool idea would be to make the room which is located at top-most tower would be to have it a library where the wizard would go to to find some hidden ancient magic. But seriously awsome job and thanks for sharing.
