This is great. So far my "mastering" has been pushing the track up against a limiter until some stuff saturates slightly and then sitting back and going, "Okay I'd get drunk listening to that."

honestly, the "i'd get drunk listening to that" is a legit test.

Jeremy, mastering my track: "So this track is a little *too* center-focused..." Me, remembering that all three synths that were used to make it were mono-synths: "...oh yeah. Forgot that stereo imaging is a thing you usually wanna do. Whoops!" (Seriously, I'm amazed at the amount of stuff you can tweak in Ozone. I need my own copy at this point.) Great video overall. Lots of useful insight in here! :D

It's always lovely to watch how other people master things, but mastering a fully-exported track has always been terrifying to me. I do so much work pre-mastering as I go through my production workflow, and the idea of taking someone else's track and trying to master it, without stems... you're a brave soul.

Another great video, Jeremy. What you've inspired me to do is use the stuff I've got in better ways. While I don't have Ozone, I do have all the nice mastery stuff that came with the DAW I use and a great deal of what I saw here will translate to that. Basically you inspired me to care more. Cheers.

Excellent video Jake. Love your vibe and music! That's some serious wideness at 17:27! The analyzer of Neutron often sound quite weird so I never use it. But the plugin is quite helpful for doing dynamic compression and sweetening. Subtle saturation on the master can sometimes be helpful. What sounds nice is nice. Did you ever try the mastering part of Studio One? It's cool they got a specific workplace for mastering. Great work on this mastering video! 😋

This is the best tutorial I've seen because it has different tracks that require different "problem-solving". I'll want to rewatch this at home (don't tell my boss) and take notes, really interesting stuff! I noticed you didn't use Tonal Balance Control at all, right? (sorry If I missed it) I can't understand that thing, maybe it's for pop music.
@RedMeansRecording5 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah I haven't used that thing yet. I need to learn it. Thanks for reminding me.
@BosseCory5 жыл бұрын
I find Tonal Balance Control to be just another really handy reference tool when mixing. Especially after a long session when my ears are getting tired, it can better pinpoint the difference between my song and whatever reference song I'm using (you can use its built-in reference settings or put in any song as a reference). Its bass dynamics readout has shown me problems I couldn't hear in studio (when I ignored it and took the mix to my car, the bass was definitely overcompressed).

Cheers! Q: Selig's Level plugin (on vocals, very happy, but I know little) - is ozone and the starting point you get from a reference mix (ignoring couple of selections maybe) achieving same thing but better result? Or is it by chance a sort of math thing or pultec-style passive eq 'trick'? Thx for the extra tips. New to Ozone, its taking time to get each tool/area, this vid and 2-parter help loads. +yep - fix pre-master!

Since you do your own mastering, how do you balance/decide on master buss processing/fx vs... well mastering separately? How much processing do you do on the master buss before you start mastering and what kind of processing do you like most? A lot of the techniques you went over in this video I find myself doing within the song project itself on my master buss (still keeping my peaks under -6) then I typically send it off to LANDR. Thank you for the very informative video, great as always man.
@RedMeansRecording5 жыл бұрын
I have ozone on my master channel while I'm mixing with a super basic preset on. Then near the end I dial that in, save the preset, turn off ozone and export a premaster. I don't use any master bus effects on my premaster.

Thanks for this Jeremy, I’ve been meaning to ask you a mastering question. Your video about LUFS, you mentioned you should mix your tracks to -6db. Why is that? Is it to prep for mastering?
@RedMeansRecording5 жыл бұрын
Headroom is important, so yes, it has to do with mastering. Mastering should be the stage where one gets the final volume boost for the intended medium.

The KZbin (compression) is a real thing. (It's not really compression) Musicians need to think about it. DAW levels are not the same as KZbin levels. This also goes for iTunes, Spotify and others. The Loudness Wars are over. Use loudness penalty dot com to check your mix. It is a free online tool.

apart from the fundamentals, mastering is subjective and seriously overhyped. every "engineer" has their own tastes and hear sound differently, have different opinions on how a mix should sound. learn the fundamentals and ANYBODY can master, i'm sick of this being treated like magic when it's not. good music not mastered will always sound good. bad music is just bad even when mastered.! If you can produce and mix, you can master your own track. Why have someone else claim they finished the sound of your track????
