Let's Play Bloodborne - Late to the Party

Our Ian Higton didn't really get on with Dark Souls when he played it for Late to the Party with Johnny, but how will he fare with Bloodborne, given that it's a little more aggressive, has guns, and is therefore much more up Mr Higton's street? Aoife Wilson decided to find out. For her sins.

Thanks, Ian and Aoife! This was a ton of fun. One of my favourite games of all time, and it's still so much fun watching people go through the early areas! They really throw you in at the deep end. Everybody should give this a shot now it's free! It won't be for everyone but you might be surprised; I'm already seeing friends who thought they'd hate it start to really come around on it a few hours in.

I am also a Filthy Inverter, but never before had I considered that perhaps I was imagining the joystick impaled in the back of my avatar's skull and that's why it's comfortable. Thank you, Ian.

Very late comment, but using this logic - meaning that the joystick is implanted in the back of the character's head - inverters should invert both y- AND x-axis. Because turning your head left would mean pushing the joystick right and vice versa. But most of them, like Ian, only invert the Y-axis. Which isn't consistent with their justification for inverting.

@@nightcatarts Absolutely, but in a game where it's allowed like Bloodborne, Ian's logic (joystick attached to back of head) would dictate that he inverts the x-axis as well. Which he doesn't. Inverting controls is 100% absolutely fine and no one should be lambasted for it. But the "joystick-in-the-back-of-the-head" argument does not hold water unless you invert both y- and x-axes whenever possible (like Bloodborne).

@@Paroex Your argument doesn't make much sense because to look left/right we rotate our heads left or right. You can't rotate an analogue stick, only tilt it, so tilting left or right is the most natural, just as tilting back on the stick mimics tilting your head back to look upwards. Though I only invert controls in first person games, where the view is very similar to real life, and use standard controls in third person games where you're controlling the camera rather than your character's direct view.

What I said was that if one uses the stick in the back of the head-logic, i.e., tilting the analogue stick tilts the hypothetical stick in the back of the head, then for constency's same, both the X and Y axis should be inverted. I was only directing my comment towards those who A) uses the stick in the head argument AND also B) inverts Y axis only, and not X.

Ian, I've only watched five minutes of this so far, and I'm new to Eurogamer (apart from Aoife and Johhny's DS playthrough), but your arguments on inverting controls have won my respect already. Bravo. Been saying that for YEARS. You and Mike Channell should have t-shirts printed or something.

I definitely think Ian should give this a chance on his own time. I've seen many people who didn't like the previous souls games really like this one and it nails the iconic lovecraftian existential horror feel better than any other game or movie.

Haven't played it for a year or so, but I'm pretty sure to perform a visceral after a stagger you don't do a charge attack, you just press R1. So: a) I'm wrong, b) Aoife doesn't know this/got it wrong accidentally, or c) she's trolling Ian at around the 25min mark. I hope it's c)

Use your switchy switchy to (a) unlock your fastest combos (R1 > L1 > R1 > R1 > L1) (b) Make use of the hard knockdown in long-axe's charge R2...it has hyper armor (so you can't get hit out of it), AOE, and knocks almost anything on the floor for easy okizeme

I reaaaaally hated this game when I first played it last year. Forced myself through to the Cathedral Ward and just couldn't stand it. Picked it up again about a month ago and I adore it, for some reason. Just managed to kill Amelia and I have a lovely hat, so all is well. This should totally be the Let's Play after DS!

I've always assumed my preference for inverted controls comes from playing flight sims decades ago. Pulling the joystick back makes the plane go up, and afterwards that mechanic just felt right on other 3D games.

My second character I ran past the scourge beast (wolf) and dodged the huntsman (man beast) then pulled the lever then dodged him again then went up the ladder and lit the lamp then went to the hunters dream then got weapons and the notebook. With my first character I am new game +. Bloodborne is amazing and my favorite game. My favorite game used to be [PROTOTYPE] then the Darkness II and now Bloodborne. The Darkness II is not nearly as good as my top three games, Bloodborne, [PROTOTYPE] and Life Is Strange.

I love both Bloodborne and Late to the Party but I had to turn this off after it became very clear that no one was ever going to tell Ian about weapon transformation, which is bizarre because Aoife mentions it at the start of the video. How do you get someone to play Bloodborne for over an hour and never mention L1 to transform weapons, how regain works, or how to perform visceral attacks (which is the primary purpose for guns in the game)? I was SCREAMING at my monitor.

The lack of regain attacks was what was killing me. It's the defining aspect of how dark souls and bloodborne are different to me (and why a lot of people who aren't dark souls fans love bloodborne). In dark souls, you get spanked, you retreat. In bloodborne, you get spanked, you charge in to recover your health.

bloodborne is great and definitely a notch above dks3 in terms of map design but it still falls flat compared to the shortcuts and connections of dark souls 1. the shortcuts in bloodborne are ultimately limited to within their respective zones. there was never many scenarios where you realized you had gone through a whole new area only to end up back at the very beginning of the game with minor exceptions (the woods leading up to yosefkas clinic but at the back end of the building). ie: getting to blighttown the standard way and ending up in valley of drakes to realize it connects to new londo which then connects to fire link. that shit made the game super immersive. blood borne was very repetitive in its short cuts and i at least predicted two shortcuts, one at every midpoint and endpoint of a zone. with that said everything else was topnotch.
