Agreed, the film version really cuts out a lot of what makes it a Dune board game. Particularly the player alliances and faction specific victory conditions. But also just how the Fremen soldiers are worth twice what soldiers of the other factions are worth, and the Sardaukar are as well except when compared with Fremen. There are just so many small details that highlight the major plot points and themes of the book that aren’t demonstrated in this version of the game.

Just a production note, I would mirror and flip the above camera for future videos where you use it so when you are gesturing or watching the hands played it matches the other view. It was confusing keeping up with the two views where Laurie and Tom were on opposite sides depending on above and hard cam as an example. Great video as always NRB!

When Brooke played the shield card at 1:01:03, shouldn't that have created a nuclear explosion because she also played the lasgun in the same turn? The text on the lasgun says "if ANYONE plays a shield in this battle" everyone and everything dies.

Just discovered the channel and absolutely love it! I'd really enjoy more Dune content in all forms, 6 player advanced Dune which costumes I think would be hilarious and awesome!! Also Dune Imperium. One thing I noticed during this game is that the starting troops were forgotten, normally the game starts with an ongoing battle!!

Just to let you know the battle between blair and adam with the laser gun shouldve been an explosion. the card reads if anyone plays a shield card it creates an explosion in the space. you can play both to cause it not just if your opponent plays one and you the other.

Great job guys! Probably said below but you can have more than one faction battle in a territory but only two factions in a stronghold. Battle Advantage is always in turn order, which is counter clockwise starting with the person with the First Player token.

There was a Dune board game that hasn't been in print since the 80s I believe. But it is my preferred way to play since this version is just an incredibly stripped down version of that game. You can play as Harkonnen (basically the same as this version but when they buy a market card, they get another card for free), Atreides (mostly the same as this version but they can also see what the top spice card is and they can see what card is on top of the market deck as well), the Fremen (again, quite similar except they get 3 soldiers back for free and can deploy them anywhere within a specific third of the board, they also move three spaces as opposed to two but they don't get the bonuses of ornithoptors (another thing in the old edition where if you own one of the two cities, you can move out of that city up to four spaces unless you're the Fremen) and they can ride worms rather than be eaten), the Bene Gesserit (they have the Voice portion of this version's Imperium and also don't necessarily need to engage in combat, they also can pick a player and turn at the start of the game and if that player wins on that turn, the Bene Gesserit win instead), the Emperor (they get spice from item sales and also can pay to revive up to 3 additional soldiers), and the Navigator's Guild (they can pay spice to redeploy their forces around the map, the other players also have to pay you spice in order to get their forces on the board except for the Fremen since they live there). Purchasing items is also an auction where everyone has a chance to bid on the card but only the Atreides player knows what is up for grabs. Cards include weapons, defenses, sacrificial heroes who can take the place of your real heroes, musical instruments or clothing items (these are useless), and a jihad card that permanently destroys the Stormwall and makes the cities (not strongholds) vulnerable to the storm. Once a worm appears, alliances can be made. Being allied means your ally gets a minor version of your abilities. So allying with the Guild means you can pay half price to deploy your forces, being allied with the Emperor means they can pay to revive 3 soldiers for you, being allied with the Fremen make you better at moving around the map and you get a few free soldiers back, etc. To win in an alliance, you need to own 4/5 strongholds between the two of you rather than 3/5 if you were solo. It's more complicated, but it's a whole lot more about scheming and picking the right allies to use their abilities to circumvent the randomness of the game. An Emperor-Fremen alliance can field and recover the most soldiers, Emperor-Guild alliance is the biggest economic powerhouse, Atreides-Harkonnen can run the market, Atreides-Bene Gesserit can just run combat with the Voice and seeing battle plans, and all sorts of other combinations.

Gale Force Nine released a new edition of the old Dune you're describing in 2019. Most of the rules are the same as these ^ with some minor changes (I think they included some old expansion rules as an advanced version of the new base game). The 2019 version is not stripped down like the one in this video, and the art isn't tied to the movie.

what I love about this game is how it perfectly portraits Dune. The careful maneuvering, the backstabbing, the emperor swimming in money, the storm, the worms, the Atreides getting obliterated at the start, the Fremen being good at combat, just perfect. Sadly I normally dont have people to play it with.

Love the videos overall and this ones great, couple rules errors though. 1. The two faction limit only applies to strongholds. All sand territories can absolutely have three or even all four factions in them. 2. Blair played the Lasgun and a shield together the first time. That would also cause the Lasgun shield explosion. The Lasgun says if ANYONE plays a shield the explosion happens.
