It rarely comes up in adaptations, but in the novel, postmortem examinations of Martian camps yielded shriveled corpses of a biped Martian species that the invading Martians had brought along as a food supply. Having them look like Jabba the Hutt's house musicians and be used as guinea pigs to test the black smoke seems like a reasonable invention of the game designers.

Incidentally, in the book the martians are depicted as cold, calculated and unsympathetic but NOT needlessly cruel or sadistic. There's a moment told off in the novel where humans had managed to restore power to a district in London and the crowd had consecutively celebrated and enjoyed their evening with dance and drink. On the morrow, the crowd noticed a fighting machine stood nearby, observing. It's unclear how long that martian had simply watched the humans, perhaps as a human might enjoy watching animals go about their business. Only when the crowd dispersed in fear, did he give chase and catch some hundred of them for food. Many such moments are in the book, that display martians are not evil, merely out to survive and as humans care not for the trivial lives of lesser animals, to too do the martians not care for humans. But like humans, it's not impossible they might have felt some curiosity and amusement in observation.

@@ct918 The book details that the martians' intellects were so vast compared those of humans that they considered humanity nothing more like sophisticated apes. They never once consider a human worthly of meaningful conversation. Perhaps because to them, humanity would have nothing interesting to say. Mankind has also massacred and subsequently domesticated somewhat intelligent animals with whom we might co-exist. Some people give priority to expansion and exploitation and so those animals had to go. Does that make mankind evil? Are those people entirely evil? No, it's a selfish act derrived from inconsideration, apathy and desire that is often cruel and heartless. The act is evil. That machine capturing humans and probably killing a few is evil. The martian inside was not evil in the way we often see comically 'evil' characters bring pain because they just loooove inflicting it. The book even opens apologetically, by stating the reader not judge the martians too harshly because it was their survival at stake and desperation that drove the reckless and merciless conquest. It's not moral relativism, it's nuance. Distinguish an evil act and an evil mind. A person who takes joy from seeing others' misery is probably closest to evil. Because they might go out of their way to cause misery just for their own enjoyment.

Corporal Xander Seeing as how they were watching long enough to know that humanity was always at war, they should've no doubt seen disease at work, also noting that they had wiped out bacteria on their own planet (in the book) which means that they already knew of them (also keep in mind, they were looking at an image of a globe, by your logic they wouldn't have seen people in the first place and would've thought of it as abandoned).

I had the music dubble Cd plus the game on Cd-rom aswell. This was around 98'/99'. I even read the book at the same time and I saw the old War of the worlds Movie from the 50's around the same period. I was around 10 years old and other games that were to be higly sucessfull was coming into the picture, like Star Craft and Age of Kings, Diablo II. But this is true nostaligia for me. They existed so many cool games already then witch was both alternative and fun, such as this one, Abe's Exodus, Gabriel Nights and Riven, the mist sequel. Only to name a few!

@girlgarde4 жыл бұрын
I do to an extent. While I don't want them to invade the Earth and wipe out Humanity, I don't want them to die out. I'd want them to be able to fix the problems with Mars but barring that, allow them to peacefully settle in isolated areas of the Earth in exchange for some of their technology.
@doobiesmoke154 жыл бұрын
@@girlgarde That sounds like a very fair and wise solution
@girlgarde4 жыл бұрын
@@doobiesmoke15 Yes but sadly, neither side would go for it. The Martians see Humans as cattle and not worth talking to or at best, dangerous savages that can't be reasoned with. In turn, the Humans would see the Martians as monsters and try to kill them on sight since the Martians look quite alien compared to Humans. Of course, the Martians think of Humans as being alien looking and hideous in appearance. I'd have to try and get both sides talking to each other and guiding them through the negotiations. To do all this, I'd need to be some sort of super being like Q from Star Trek or at least be the head of a more advanced race then the Martians.
@doobiesmoke154 жыл бұрын
@@girlgarde Very good points.Interesting and well thought out. Have you ever read the Last and First Men? It has a sub-plot that puts humans in the same role as the Martians in this story.Humans flee the dying earth and settle on Venus.Things don't go very well for the native Venusians

H.G. Wells himself made a parallel that humans are no better than martians, if to remember mass genocides for new territory. America, for example.

In this game, disease is not a problem for them. In the book, it was explained that the martians have no bacteria on Mars, and had no concept of their existence in the first place. It does make me wonder what the martians thought was going on every time a plague happened on Earth, though. They must've been really confused as to why so many humans would die for no apparent reason. As for the population, they knew how large ours was, but they didn't know how dangerous we could be in large numbers because they aren't as intimate with warfare as we are.

It is true that countries like the USA and Great Britain have aided others, it happened in the 1920's when Communist Russia was starving and Lenin was desperate for help... But I don't know that a lot of people would be willing to share resources with aliens who just promptly showed up and demanded a portion of the planet as their own country. More importantly, the martians see us as animals and like to use our blood for food. They don't see any reason why they should cooperate with us when they assume that they can simply conquer the planet. They are all brain and no heart.

It’s such a shame that modern depictions of the War of the Worlds don’t use these Martians. They don't need magic plot Armor shields to take on a modern earth, they just fight smart like they're supposed to be and invoke a systems collapse. - Before the invasion, load the space gun with cylinders full of black smoke and target major cities. Earths current population of 2+billion is only possible due to a very fragile system of specialization and trade. If that system is disrupted for just a few months it would condemn billions to death via starvation. And those billions would cripple humanities ability to resist in their desperation. But with a few hold outs for a real thunder child moment.

That would be interesting. Although I think they could come with a game where there is a Martian campaign and a Human campaign. As the levels go on, you constantly switch between the two races. The human campaign could be based on survival (with the occasional chance of battling, like controlling Thunderchild), and the Martian based on fighting or capturing humans. As each chapter goes on, you get to see the story on both sides. Maybe there could even be a bit of free roaming on some levels.
