And I completely agree with your assessment of the game. I'm so glad I got to play it almost for the first time again. And I'm also glad that Cyan is still out here being themselves. A small indie studio that was founded 30+ years ago, never got bought out by another company, staying true to themselves. I hope they're able to keep going. Another thing they added in the remake: you can open the door in 233 and go outside. There's not a lot out there (except more burned books) but it's very atmospheric. The door misbehaved a lot in VR though, hopefully they've fixed that by now. In the original it seemed likely the dome spinning was a part of the mechanism to power the books inside. In the remake that doesn't make sense any more. Perhaps instead it's related to containment of the expanse. Also, still kinda seems like a dick move from Atrus to leave you to fall into the fissure, rather than inviting you back home with him. Granted, this was the last time the fissure would be accessible, but just because the book landed where you came from once doesn't mean that you would travel the same path, many years later (especially given Gehn's observations that the stars in the fissure were moving) -- or that what was a safe journey and landing for a book would be safe for you. And especially since it turns out where you came from was not far from k'Veer anyway (though nobody knew that at the time).
@Mirality4 ай бұрын
Actually, speaking of "many years later"... if the book did just land in front of you one day (as the Myst intro always depicts it), and didn't just spend many years buried in the desert, that does suggest travel through the fissure does take a great many years (time enough for Atrus and Catherine to have now-adult kids), so it's at least going to be a very boring journey, or a fatal one if the mysterious energies of the fissure don't remove your need to eat (which could be possible since they do something similar for breathing apparently). And we never really hear anything about the Rivanese people Gehn "tested" the fissure with... did they turn up in the desert as well at some point or did they land in a different Age entirely?

That was great, I really enjoyed watching you go through the game thoughtfully, with an eye to the story and the original game. I watched another LP almost a month ago, right when this game released, and there are definantly something that have been changed or fixed. What stands out the most is that the first play didn't have the persistant tremors at the beginning - they go a long way to establishing the premise that the world is collapsing, before you get deep enough to read journals or see broken tram stations. Also, the imager seems to have been patched. The first time, as much as the player tried the drawer wouldn't open so they only got the one Keta message.

Another thing - not sure if you mentioned it - if you go outside on 233 you can find the burnt remains of a descriptive book with some odd topology flickering out in the linking panel. 28:03 - sniffles from Anna after the imager recording already finished playing and the ash settled back into a pile? Also at 25:34 she pronounces "D'ni" the way I'd've thought it is from how it's spelled. (I always thought it was weird Atrus and most others pronounce it "Dunny"). Which is weird to try to explain in-universe, since wouldn't she've heard it first, and only read it much later? And again speaking to Catherine is a balancing influence... the horizon level is off by 2.2° before, and only by 0.2° after speaking to her. And then again it's off by 2.1° upon returning to ground level, whereas it was level before speaking to her. And then after freeing her, it's back to normal, 0.2° tilt at ground level. Edit: Oops, @Dilandau3000 hearted this comment and then I edited it to add the part about "D'ni" pronunication. I didn't know that editing a comment automatically removes the heart. Oh well, now I know.

A few comments: 1) Why are there no restrooms in any living quarters? 2) Katherine treats you like a wife after twenty years of marriage; as soon as she sees you, she starts giving orders. 3) After Capturing Gehn, wouldn't it be safer to throw away the prison book to the ocean? If you have it at home some idiot might accidentally liberate Gehn. 4) That guy Atrus is not that different from his daddy: as soon as you are not longer needed, he throws you away. Couldn't he at least tell you that the way home or a safe place awaits you through the fissure? 5) Instead of all this elaborate rescue operation, I would have sent Gehn an actual linking book to D'ni and have a prison capsule waiting for him there ( just like the cell at the beginning of the game). And I would welcome him with a loaded machine gun in my hand like a good old Godfather movie. 6) I enjoy your walkthroughs very much. Thanks a lot and I hope there are more coming!!

Cracking LP, as always! I always love your attention to detail and also explaining the logic behind puzzles. Too many LPers want to rush through things, which is poison to the environment and mood of Cyan games. I had some mixed feelings about the Riven remake at first, mainly just because they changed things. Thinking about it now, though, I really appreciate the changes they made; the puzzles feel much more integrated into the world, even moreso than the original game, and I love the little tweaks to the lore with things like the changes to the Starry Expanse. I still wish for/hope for an update that will do things like add the bumps and jolts to the mag-lev rides, but that's such a minor thing now. So, I do feel Riven 2024 is a worthy remake that in some ways surpasses the original. Which is no small feat, and Cyan should feel proud of what they've accomplished. P.S. Regarding Aitrus's appearance in the imager vs. the photograph we presumed to be him, I figure that it was silently retconned that the photo is of Khalis, Gehn's grandfather and Aitrus's father. Aitrus was in his 80s when he died, which for a D'ni man would've still been quite young. P.P.S. There was an update recently that added some subtle changes that have interesting implications for the lore; as a hint there's something very interesting in the sky on Age 233. 😉

Loved it! The game is simply perfect but there are areas that could use a little seasoning like a day and night or as you progress in the game Riven begins to show signs of decay like tremors getting worse or the sky turning red. One part would be getting back from the the 233rd age and as soon as you opened the door to Gehn's lab you're hit with a massive quake and the sky becoming blood red and fractures can be seen on the walls and buildings. Just little things like that would have been neat. Still this is a great game and it's been an awesome let's play!

And so all were saved and sent back to where they came from... maybe. On the recordings I wonder if Ghen partially just copied his mothers belief on who was to blame here though, she'd have been influential after all. In which case maybe he kept that recording as it seemed to be a record of guilt. Something that made it all make sense to them on why things had broken down then and there. Well it was a good game overall, impressively done overall. Some compromises had to be taken in models and where you could walk, no doubt in part due to their limited size and funding, but with in those constraints it seems to have been for the most part quite amazing.

It kind of annoys me that every character in the Myst games and novels, including the ones who are sympathetic to Anna, take for granted that she caused the fall of D'ni. I can believe that she would feel that guilty-people feel guilt irrationally all the time-but I wouldn't expect Atrus and Yeesha to uncritically go along with the idea, which is what they seem to do on the occasions they acknowledge it.
@micahbush53974 ай бұрын
Judging by the imager message and _Myst: The Book of Atrus,_ Anna blamed herself for the Fall of D'ni, and Atrus never heard an alternative perspective until he began searching out other D'ni survivors. As for Yeesha, she seems to believe that the old D'ni needed to die, so from her point of view, Ti'ana actions were good, and it was D'ni's own corruption that destroyed the city. Of course, _Myst: The Book of Ti'ana_ tells a different story. Ti'ana didn't "force her ideals," she submitted evidence that proved Veovis had been framed for the murders for which he had been imprisoned, and made a case that beheading him (a virtually unheard-of punishment) would be cruel and unusual. The Council ultimately made the decision to implement her plan of writing a Book to a special Prison Age that would be destroyed as soon as Veovis linked through, and the plan would have worked if A'Gaeris hadn't used inside information and the help of slave labor to link in, dressed and shaved exactly like Veovis, such that he would be touching the Prison Age book's linking panel. So Ti'ana did nothing wrong, it was A'Gaeris who was at fault, and, to a lesser degree, the Council for underestimating him.

It's unfortunate they had to get rid of the live-acted scenes, and I somewhat wish they'd used some other technologies (assuming they might have been available) such as face scanning and the like to keep more of that feel. That said, whether it's intentional or not, I *really* like that the lighting on the characters is slightly different than in the world proper, which keeps some of that same feeling I remember of them looking a *little* out of place (since the live-acted videos were likewise done to a green screen in most cases, I'm sure). I'm also going to have to look into this debate about the nature of descriptive books. Being able to edit the world by editing the book seems a clear-cut answer to me that the books define the worlds, especially in addition to the fact that we never see a whole world (admittedly, due to game limitations). Instead we have little isolated islands. I guess my current stance on the idea is clear, at any rate.

Thank you for this Playthrough Sven, it was an amazing ride! Will you do a Bonus Episode showing off the Bad Endings? I remember that you did that in your Original Riven Playthrough and I wonderd if you do that here too, especially since some of the Bad Endings have changed slightly in the Remake. Also I dont know if you noticed it or not but when the Dagger falls into the Fissure you can see Massive Starry Expanse Breaches appearing in the Sky behind it and keep growing larger and larger, was a neat little addition with the recent patch that IMO makes the Ending all that more dramatic.

16:05 Yes, they changed the date, probably because the old date (87.7.30) is impossible with the D'ni calendar, which has 10 "months" of 29 "days" each. Unfortunately, it seems that instead of changing the "month" to 8, they moved back a month, which still can't be right, since the dates in Atrus's journal weren't changed. (Unless they're implying that Gehn forgot which month it was, a very human thing to do.) Also, I don’t like the change of Gehn remembering the theft of the discarded Linking Book, or putting together that Catherine has written a new Age with that Book. I prefer the idea that the Moiety, by taking the Book out of the furnace, evaded Gehn's notice.

Also, it is a bit weird that Aitrus appears much younger in the imager than in the photo. Maybe the imager recording was from around the time he married Anna, and the photo is from shortly before the Fall? (That, or the photo is of Kahlis, as you suggested.) Regardless, it's a bit strange that Aitrus went through all the trouble of learning English when Anna already knew D'ni. (Actually, the same is true for Catherine, because she already knew D'ni when she met Atrus, yet they apparently settled on English for their default language on Myst.)

When I first played Riven, one thing I was hoping to find in 233 but wasn't there was the Book Crystal Gehn had stolen from the Moiety. But now I think the reason we can't find it here is because Gehn took it with him. Since he had no way of knowing the Riven book was still in K'veer, Gehn probably had a linking book to 233 with him along with the Book Crystal to power it.

I tried to watch your Myst III LP next but.... your style has improved since then? I did enjoy your opening fanfic tho!

I guess myst 3 is next on the list of remakes? it's the one I grew up with and I know there are a lot of views and scenes in it that would be a treat to see in vr. also, something I've wondered about for years now is how much of riven got destroyed when the fissure got reopened? the immediate area we see in the game, the entire planet riven takes place on, or did the entire universe it was a part of somehow collapse into it?

Is that final scene teasing Uru again? Do you think they'll release this remake one for consoles (my roommate wants to experience it for themself as they never managed to play the original game)? And do you think they'll make a remake of Exile - would Brad Dourif's retirement (outside of Chucky/Childs Play related works) affect things, if they did have to make changes to the dialouge... hm. In any case, thank you for making the return to work amazing for me, getting a little slice of your calming LP style has been great. Now I need to finally get off my butt and watch Firmament lol

It's just a little joke based on the fact that that's where the fissure comes out in Uru. As much as a remake of Exile would be cool, I doubt it'll happen since Cyan didn't make that game in the first place.

Thanks for yet another great LP buddy! Looking forward to your next one. By the way, did you back the Linking Book kickstarter back then? And if so, did you get that inkwell?

Thanks for this. I also played the original when it first came out. I might have to get the new one, based on your review. Even though you just walked me through it. EDIT: punctuation

ironic that despite how long the series has persisted, there are still only *five* main line games. #ghenwasright

How did Catherine know ghen was actually trapped in the book when she opened it?

I assume there was somw way to trap yourself and thats why that bridge cant be retracted any more. My guss is it had to deal with auto telporting location if you get stuck or fall out of bounds put you somewhere that if bridges were all retrackted yould be trapped
