Let's Play Riven (1997) - FULL REMASTERED PLAYTHROUGH

This is a sort of "remastered" version of the original Riven Let's Play from 2009; it uses the original narration, but the gameplay footage has been re-recorded. No, it's not the game that's remastered, just the Let's Play. Dozens of hours of work went into recording new footage, editing the videos with the narration, checking everything lined up properly, etc. I hope you enjoy the end result! Please check the video description for lots more information about how this video was made, and some of the issues that I could not fix. It definitely was a lot of work. I went through a few different ideas before deciding to do this; first I thought I could maybe just re-record the cutscenes, or maybe redo part 3, 4 and 5 to fix the missing cursor, but the more I looked at the original footage, the less happy I was with the quality, and upscaling it just made that so much more obvious. So, I ended up doing this. I'm very happy that this is the only Let's Play that needed this treatment, as I wouldn't want to do it again. :)

The original Riven: the best ‘puzzle-box’ ever created, with a great lore to boot. As a plus, it has Rand Miller as Atrus (for me, he always did a great job as the player’s friend), John Keston as Gehn and an amazing OST by Robyn Miller. Too bad I just watched the let’s play of the remake and the segmented original LP. But I surely can stop here to leave my like. :)

I'm really happy to see this! And I still feel that Rand Miller's worn-out take on Atrus here fits the gravity of all the difficult work he has been doing. Come Myst III, Atrus acts like he has gotten some much-needed rest. Anyhow, we're back to the Riven where the natives get to school in a submarine train!

In 1997 I had the version on 5 CD-ROM which required swapping discs before riding to another island. How far we have come 😅

I still think this is my favourite let's play of yours, and it was definitely the vehicle from my interest in the Myst series going from some very vague nostalgia for a game that my uncle and older brother loved to something which I could really take interest in for myself. I'm a bit confused. I thought you used footage from the 2024 remake but you're using rerecorded Riven 25th Anniversary footage? What is that? I thought only the 2024 remake had randomized puzzles?

No, this is still footage from the original game, just re-recorded in better quality. The remake has too many differences to be usable with my original narration. Riven always had random combinations; it's Myst 2021 that introduced random puzzle solutions where the original didn't have any.
