The combat in this game gives me massive Golden Sun vibes and I love it for that

British/UK references: 12:58 "All creatures great and small" - from the hymn, All Things Bright & Beautiful. Later used as a book/tv show title for the works of James Herriot. 20:30 onwards All of the food is based on irl brands Hans Peas (Heinz Beans), Hilda Rice (Tilda Rice) UWU (OXO.. its stock cubes), Old Toby (Old El Paso... plus a Tolkien reference im guessing), Ziggys Bolognaise sauce looks based on Dolmio, Pompai tomatoes (Napolina Tomatoes), Green Gnome (Green Giant, obviously). 31:11 Its London (again). To the left, the pickle shaped building is called "The Gherkin" and on the right the large spire is The Shard. 51:59 The phone shown here is the infamous Nokia 33-10, As Keith recalls, it is Renowned the world over for its mythril-like toughness.

Some rpg's have unnecessary grinding requirements, but generally I have greater patience for them because if I like the general feel of something I won't become quickly exhausted with the repetitiveness. But in time I'll tire of that too. Games are a mood thing more than anything else. Sometimes I might want an rpg for a few days. Or I might want racing or fighting. Does anyone else feel like that? Like the changing of seasons almost. The big sprites are great. These look good. Guessing the yellow god is a golden retriever or actually an orange cat.

56:05 Illuminated manuscripts are texts where generally the borders are illustrated, and often they use gold inks. (Though I don't know if the gold ink is why they're called 'illuminated', might just be an antiquated way of saying 'with illustration'?)

Verm having weird flashes of talking to himself makes me think he's based on another guy with a big sword who went a bit crazy after a loss. Someone originally in pixel style who gained a cape in some later iterations. (Though I have thoughts about the inspiration behind that in itself.)

Ooh If you like turn based combat that feels like a puzzle I highly suggest the game Chained Echoes. It's probably the best JRPG-like out there as every encounter is a different puzzle to solve and there's almost no grinding for levels, as each level up is only gotten by defeating bosses. Also the story and characters and music are top notch.

Interesting that the librarian says they don't specialise in god studies and then in his next line he says their collection is mostly historical and religious texts. Because under the old way, studying the gods is a completely different thing from religion.

I think the scorpion and frog story is more-so meant to express the idea that people will not always act according to what is reasonable - but instead you can expect them to act according to their base desires, or their "nature." The frog agrees to take the scorpion because the scorpion explains that if he stung the frog, they would both drown - so of course he would not do that. He does it anyway - because people do not act blindly in accordance with their own best interest, but rather according to who they are and what they want. It is a warning against the danger of making alliances with people who are volatile or violent because they might not act reasonably but rather impulsively. The point it is trying to make has nothing to do with whether or not a person can overcome their nature, it is simply to do with whether you should put yourself in a position where you are relying to do so - and fairly obviously this is not a good idea. Yet it remains a valuable lesson because there are many people who will take on others who they know are likely to hurt them, and repeatedly suffer for it with nothing to show in return.

Hrm, might have to check this one out when my budget recovers in the new year. As other JRPGs (or well, that style of game) go wihout the repeat/random encounters go. Chrono Trigger is the obvious one to shout out. Recently awarded Indie Game of the Year Sea of Stars also has fixed ones. Child of Light (by Ubisofts oft forgotten indie division) back in the early last gen days too.
