I invite you to imagine this: Star Fox Adventures only Krystal doesn't immediately get taken out of the plot as a giant bait-and-switch, reducing the story to "Rescue the Princess" and rendering her character completely irrelevant. And instead Fox and Krystal work together to achieve their goals, slowly and organically building a rapport in the process, based on mutual respect for each other's abilities and values. There might even be romance if it was done right, though it isn't necessary. There could be an opportunity for local split-screen co-op with one player controlling Fox and the other Krystal. And they would have different abilities that have to be used together to progress. And for solo play you could switch between Fox and Krystal. Just imagine how much better that would have immediately made the game. In terms of gameplay variety, in terms of character development, storytelling and worldbuilding, in terms of adherence to tired stereotypes, in just about every way imaginable. Part of me has fond memories for this game which is why I won't replay it any time soon (or watch this, to be honest) but I always felt that it could have been so much more and I was playing more for the game it could be, just barely visible beneath the seams of the game it actually is...

Johnny, if it makes you feel any better, they renamed the planet to Sauria in the later games of the franchise - apparently even they agreed that "Dinosaur Planet" sounds way to silly (also Sauria is a pretty fun mission / multiplayer stage in Star Fox Assault)

It was very sad to watch Johnny's happy childhood memories of Starfox be subsumed by horror when playing this game. PS, you were great on the Outside Xtra stream. Hopefully you will bring back some tips for the Darksouls finalle. Good luck.

So, I persevered with this when it came out. I'd been waiting ages for decent Ninty titles to hit the Gamecube and this was such a huge let down. I'd watched mates on the N64 having an amazing time on the classic N64 titles and thought "aye, I'll go for some of that in my next console", shopped in my PlayStation and used the money on a 'cube. And this is what I got... Ugh. One of the very few titles I've bought not completed. I got to a point where you're flying around a totem pole on a pterodactyl, shooting at something. That was the end for me, junk controls, huge disappointment. Omitted from memory.

The only things that are good about it are the music and graphics. Everything else is absolute garbage - the story , the annoying characters, the dull gameplay (inferior zelda clone with the most boring combat system ever). I got this game for Christmas in 2002 and it was such a letdown that seeing people stick up for it makes me irrationally angry. Would have been interesting to see how it had turned out if it had been released on the N64 instead, and without Starfox shoehorned into it.

Assault is pretty good imo, the ground fighting isn't that bad and about 40% is Arwing stuff. Command was ok, I guess. And Zero is... well, I like it I guess, but I can see why most people hate it.

I don’t want a dark gritty game at all. D: Assault was OKAY, but I really hated the tank and on-foot missions, so it actually ranks below Adventure for me. I didn’t hate Adventure because I knew going in that it was a Zelda clone. Hell, it tells you as much in the title. I think Zero is probably the best Star Fox game since 64. Had they offered the option of classic controls, I think it would have been received a lot better. If they were to port it to Switch minus the motion controls, I’m sure it’d sell better.

Mature star fox? We're getting into shadow the hedgehog territory here. I loved Starfox 64 as a kid, but the world is pretty lame. An anthropomorphic fox with attitude is the sort of thing that only a ten year old would think was cool. It's like Poochy from Itchy and Scratchy. Starfox gets away with it when it's married to a great game ant not focused on the characters. Otherwise.... urgh.
