Same here! Always easy starting saws, and seem to be very reliable. The 460 started to run lean, and high idle, some time after this video, replaced the carb with an oe part, runs like a champ once again! They’re probably to most dependable saws that I own, and always come with, as a back up saw for our fire wood cutting outings. Thanks for the sub and comment!

how exactly do you do a muffler mod on a chainsaw because i have a 455 and it would be nice to get a bit more juice out of it. My guess is that it has something to do with taking out the spark arrestor with that other piece and then tuning the carb. but i cant figure out what the tool i need to unscrew the screws in those 3 holes are

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnvSl36ml7-Aesk Here’s a link to one of my videos, shows what I did to open up the a 455 muffler, it’s a little bit more advanced mod, welding required, also to remove the muffler, there is 3 allen bolts, either 4 or 5mm size, remove those with a “long reach” allen tool, muffler is off, there should be a muffler gasket, and heat shield behind the muffler, note the orientation in which they come off, will need to reinstall them upon re assembly, hope this helps. Some guys drill or make another hole in the muffler, and screw a side deflector on it cover the new exhaust outlet. There is a few company’s out there that make chainsaw muffler deflectors that can be ordered, don’t forget the carburetor will need to be tuned, normally a muffler mod will make the saw run lean, can adjust or fatten up the high jet, probably won’t need much but ever saw is different

That’s a good question, I’m not exactly sure if the carbs are the same, one would assume that they are, but I am not an expert saw builder. I here ya, once the 455s top end goes, it will definitely get a 60 top end, no questions asked. Looks to be a direct swap.
@Daniel-y1l9y Жыл бұрын
I'm just wondering why do you keep taking your hand off the top of the saw and putting on the side while you're buried in wood. That totally takes away any safety from the chain brake and makes it a lot harder to stop the saw from kicking back and ripping your face off.
@tfloutdoors327 Жыл бұрын
Safety is number one when using a saw. I guess it must be a habit of mine, that isn’t that good of one. You make a valid point, there really isn’t any reason to grip the saw on the side bar, when bucking, but glad your concerned about this very issue because I see these one handed bandit in log piles using greater more powerful saws than in this video. Trust me I’m well aware of kick backs, and luckily I’ve never been hit, there is no danger of a kick back here, the wood is 12” from the saw horse, and the bars tip is out of the wood by a few inches or more. The chainsaw manufacturers build all saws with “handle bars” to use, if it was a huge issue, they would make them with only 2 gripping points, not multiple.

@@tfloutdoors327 Chain brake is not old school. Didn't use to be a thing.
@deepsticksbushman8698Күн бұрын
@tfloutdoors327 the manufacturers put handles with multiple gripping points for cutting at different angles, not to look cool while cutting. All it takes is one kick back. Happened to my uncle. When cutting down on a piece of wood, your hand should be on the top gripping point so if you do experience kick back, your wrist will engage the chain brake. Safe is better than cool.

Can you mod the 460 muffler?
@tfloutdoors3273 жыл бұрын
For sure, same muffler as on the 455, beware or some slightly tricky tuning, especially if it’s an x-torque model, the idle will need some dealing with, and depending on temperatures and climate and such, in my experience the pros to a muffler mod on a stock saw will be greater throttle response, more hp in the cut, and a cooler running saw in summer months, the cons will be greater fuel consumption and a louder running saw depending on how you go about it.

2 seconds faster and a 4cc difference is far from superior. None of that is enough to justify the price of the 460 being $100 more. Also, a 2 seconds faster and a 4cc difference is a waste of a saw model. No need to produce both models with such a small difference. Keep one and discontinue the other. The 455 has been the biggest selling saw of the two for over a decade. Look what happened to the 465 rancher. It lasted about 2 years then was discontinued because nobody wanted to pay that much for a plastic saw. The 555 and 562 were responsible for the 465 disappearing.

@Bryan Titus The Stihl 290 is a turd. The 455 has it beat every time. The 290 was Stihl's number 1 selling saw model for a long time. @@zeromark202 when I am cutting mostly just firewood, my muffler modded 590 with a 24" is my go to. I'll limb with my jonsered 2245 or husky 50 and once I get done the limbing, I block the smaller limb wood so I don't have to reach as much with a heavier saw, then switch back to the echo. When I'm feeling froggy I run the 394xp in anything over about 8-10" but that's more for the fun factor than necessity as I have blocked 30+" wood without issue with the 590. @jlc11673 ай бұрын
A 2 Stroke engine isn't like a $ stroke. A 2 stroke needs a certain amount of back pressure from the muffler in order to run correctly, if there's not enough back press. and its not timed correctly you will lose air fuel mixture through the exhaust. you time a 2 stroke mufflers back pressure by the speed of sound , you exhaust length, the RPM you'd like to achieve most power at. blah blah blah there's a shit ton of math to get a 2 strokes performance to increase through exhaust.
