Homemade mini saw pipe vs a stock style, dual port chainsaw muffler. I’m a little confused by the results. Possible carb tune in between may have been all the difference. Might have to revisit this idea in the near future.

Nice Pipe. I'm building a 372 muffler now. It has about the same taper. I'll cut out the flange from a stock muffler and then weld in my new flange and taper cone. It will look totally stock when finished pretty much.

This issue with the homemade side pipes is that most of us don't have a solid understanding of the Cadenacy Effect and the importance of back pressure on 2 stroke engines. A 2 stroke is very very different from a 4 stroke and a purely free flowing exhaust isn't ideal. But an out of tune expansion chamber is worse. Both probably better than stock, but if youre gonna make a side pipe you need to know the appropriate length of the chamber.
@eurokid83
@eurokid83 Жыл бұрын
The back pressure thing is a myth that a lot of people still believe for some reason. Less back pressure equals more performance period. Two or four stroke doesn’t matter. Never heard of cadence in internal combustion engines, I think what your referring to is pressure wave tuning. Without doing some complicated math there’s no way to tune these “iron horse” pipes or any other pipe to work on a saw. A properly modified can/factory muffler in general will perform better than any homemade “pipe” unless we’re talking about properly made/tuned resonators.
@VinnyMartello
@VinnyMartello Жыл бұрын
@@eurokid83 I didn't entirely misspell that word. Its called the Kadenacy Effect (after the engineer who discovered it) and it has to do with pressure waves and timing. The exhaust situation is VERY different for two strokes and four strokes. Thats why you see expansion chambers on 2 stoke dirt bikes and straight pips on 4 stroke. You need pressure waves timed to force fuel and air back through the ports of a 2 stroke for best performance.
@eurokid83
@eurokid83 Жыл бұрын
@@VinnyMartello yes the Kadenacy effect explains the effect of a properly timed negative pressure pulse used to scavenge a cylinder for example. Two stroke pipes are resonators and use sound waves to accomplish essentially the same thing. There may also be a pressure wave effect but I believe it’s primarily a sound wave thing. I’m not a engineer or mathematician but I have a better than average understanding of two and four stroke engines.

My observations of my own modified pipes/muffler tends to support Barry the chopper. But like you I believe there is a sweet spot to be found. I'm not a fan of super low backpressure muffler mods. I think they drink fuel and do little for power. A little less back pressure than stock is my current sweet spot. Just building a can muffler now that effectively has this pipe inside a can. I was recently sent a pipe...in fact 2 from 2 different guys. Neither went as good as my muffler mod. The Novice Lumber Jack on YT did a pipe a year ago and the seemed to really work. It can be done.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I thought a more open free flowing muffler made a saw run a little lean compared to stock, so usually after a muffler mod the saw needs to be richened a little bit to compensate. The second lots of cuts with the pipe sounded a bit richer indicating to me it is more restricted than the twin port can.
@tfloutdoors327
@tfloutdoors327 Жыл бұрын
Correct! Most of the topical muffler mods to stock can mufflers normally makes the saw run lean. I thought the same with the pipe that it was four stroking a bit more than the canned muffler in the second cuts as well. That’s why I didn’t do a carb adjustment between the two. They say if the pipe makes the saw go rich, then it’s actually working better than the other muffler.
@rpetersen709
@rpetersen709 Жыл бұрын
Agreed if the pipe makes it go rich you’re onto something, but tune with the pipe was definitely what hurt the cut time. Saw seemed better tuned to the modded stock muffler. I think you may have seen a totally different result if you had taken the time to tune it. It is also hard to tell for 100% sure on video if it was more rich than the can, given the totally different sound. so really you being the one there is the one that could tell. Good video though.

Did not tune the carb after pipe swap, want to see if the pipe changed anything, for the good or bad, seemed to be slightly 4 stoking a bit more running the pipe in the cuts under load, yep thats why i thinking it wasn’t a loss for the pipe, could have leaned it up a tad 👍

Only way that the pipe wins is if it's in perfect tune with the saw motor, which is near impossible to hit apon. This the empty can wins more times than not. If that pipe is to be used for any length of time, a support bracket should be fabricated, so as not to pull on the threads on the cylinder. Interesting take in the pipe though, I liked where you were going with it. Never know when you might hit upon a good thing, maybe some tweaking of the design is in order...

@@tfloutdoors327 Well then, fuck. I had to spend a lot of hours training my lefthanded self to be mostly right handed (along with buying all those full wraps) and now they just MAKE a lefty. :-D Nice video dude. Unless you are dipping into (impractical) tuned pipes they all make kind of similar power unless poorly made (i.e. way too open) Power bands might be in different spots.. some a little higher hp.. some a little lower hp.. Seems to me that as long as you aren't running one of the newer super-choked mufflers or, poor homeowners, one with a cat, a good mod OR pipe will help get heat out and give you a little more grunt. I personally prefer a modded muffler, as I can incrementally open until I get the noise level i'm comfortable with. At the point where my brain is saying "yeah that's still pretty comfortable" I've managed to squeak out a decent amount of chooch. With MOST saws a decent exhaust modification, a compression increase, a good tune, and a sharp chain will make a hell of a worksaw.

1" hole is a safe start... 1-1/4" if you're using a medium screen. On these 2 strokes, finding the correct can volume to stinger size/length can be time consuming as A lot of timed test cuts will be needed. The vintage saws have pipes inside their cans with minimal stick out... but, they were more geared towards torque in a specific powerband. Newer saws are geared towards more speed with ok/decent torque. Find out the cutting rpms and then figure your cylinder volumes, air transfers (in/out) and then dabble in the mystic arts of tuned exhausts with trial and error. Or just Google formulas used to calculate all of this... lol. ORRR.... find a vintage saw scale up their exhaust and add 40% to the calculations. Lol

The way you run the saw will probably make more difference than the mufflers will. If you just lay that saw up there and let it cut straight thru it will cut faster every time than rocking it over the top and cutting the back side. Rocking it over just fools the mind into thinking it's faster because you're moving and staying busy. Lol You had plenty of bar length to cut straight through. The quickest way from point A to point B is a straight line. Time the two different styles of cutting sometime and prove it to yourself. When you are rocking the saw around it quits cutting for a few seconds while a saw staying in the cut doesn't give up a second.
@tfloutdoors327

So many variables my friend, from one cut to the next, saw placement, human error in the cuts, saw tune up, raker depth’s, moisture w/in the actual wood, and so on. So debatable, which make testing a particular replacement part on a saw so difficult in real life senecio. Kinda the point of the vid was to try to make similar cuts with both pipes w/o tuning in between, not to cut the log in the fastest way possible. Great point, could have just cut straight through, for sure but didn’t, thank you for your comment, and watching my video! Cheers!

Running a saw lefty ain’t safe. You’re just living your life in the kickback zone. A good cutter is ambidextrous but predominantly righty with the arc of the cutback potential on the right of the body. At the minimum you should wear a face screen if you’re running a saw backward.
