Ploog was so great! Anyone else seethe made for TV version of Shelly's book? Michael Sarazin (Reincarnation of Peter Proud was way cool) played the monster and ended up educated and handsome only to reach the showdown in the arctic! Great stuff and there's a scene where a girl gets run down by a horse & carriage. Scary stuff for a kid. I ain't forgot it!

One of my all time favorites. I actually watched it when it first came out… I was in 3rd grade…1973…Scared the living buhjeeziz out of me!!! I didn’t watch it again until I was in my late 40s… still scary and disturbing…(love when James Mason (Polidori/ Polly Dolly) gets strung up by the monster on the mast and gets struck by lightning!!! His hands all deformed and bony…Great take on the old classic.

Ploog defenently was the best artist of these books. As I have said so many times before, horror artist aren't known by mainstream comic book readers, but some of the best creators (individually) and creative teams (for projects and company wide) were horror comic book artists.

l like Ploog's intricate line work. I know what it takes to devote that much time to drawing all those details and understand why he insisted on inking his own pages. Not a few pencil wielders in comics have been disappointed by what the inkers do with their originals. You can see the drop-off in detail work in the later issues, with simply outlines and reliance on color to fill the panels.

I think those early Ploog issues are on par with Barry Windsor Smith on Conan. His style was animated and lively, while displaying his own style of tragedy. Beautiful, timeless work.

The first Marvel Frankenstein book I bought was also #4. (Thanks to a comic book convention I got the first three.)For many issues I felt it was excellent, but after he met Dracula for a few issues I felt they were running out of ideas and going downhill. I kept buying the mag,but it only lasted 18 issues.

So cool, I didn't know Marvel did a series for The Frankenstein Monster! I knew about Werewolf by night, and of course Dracula. Great video, and information!

Ploog was what drove me to collecting WWBN and MoF. But when he left the series the magic left with him. Gene Colen was the perfect dracula artist along with wolfman as writer. An artist can make or break a book. Look at the crossover issues of Dracula and werewolf, Colan's werewolf is not good and Ploog's Dracula is "meh". Now I have WWBN and ToD in omnibus. Also have Ploogs Planet of the Apes in hardcover. Still waiting on Monster of Frankenstein in omnibus format so my Ploog can be complete.

Thanks for this, Pete. Almost the entire series came out during a personal time away from comic books so only a couple of books in the collection boxes somewhere. if memory serves, there was a collected edition published about ten years or so ago for anyone interested in that possibility. Looking forward to whatever comes next.

Odd that they didn't have Gene Colan do the art for the issues where Frankenstein's Monster meets Count Dracula, since Colan was the regular artist on Marvel's TOMB OF DRACULA. Colan's run on TOD was magnificent -- he was the perfect artist to set the mood for that book. But Ploog was also magnificent, he being my favorite Marvel artist to work on their PLANET OF THE APES magazine.

Was staying at my grandparent’s house “in the country”. Walked all the way to the Boondocks grocery store and was thrilled to find an issue of Monster Of Frankenstein! I read it under the giant willow tree in their yard, and left it outside when I went in for lunch. It then started pouring rain, and the comic was destroyed! Aaack! Got the Power ⚡️Records set very shortly afterwards. I was maybe seven?

One of my favorite comics.. I have several…including #7… (you should see who the Old Gypsy Lady ‘digs up’ from a secret cave at the end!!!) Still in good shape…50 + years later. I bought all of them off the rack when I was 9-12 years old…1973-76.

"What happened" was that it started off (as all the 70s Marvel horror series did) with care and good writing and art. A more-or-less faithful adaptation of the original novel, followed by "what came after." Meanwhile, a somewhat more predictable and inferior series began in the b&w "Monsters Unleashed" featuring the monster revived in the present by a crackpot scientist, now inexplicably mute and stumbling from one situation to another. The decision was taken to explain how the monster became mute in the colour comic and have him frozen in ice to awaken in the present, syncing up with the early episodes of the b&w series and continuing from it, with the monster a mute stooge. "Monsters Unleashed" was cancelled and the colour comic wasn't far behind it, writer Doug Moench attempted to restore some degree of intelligence and speech to the character and teamed him up with a robot before handing over to Bill Mantlo for an inconclusive final issue with a female Frankenstein descendant appearing in the final panel. In short, what happened was they started well then messed it up!
