He says that because when you draw a smile, the eyes play a part to what the context and the feel of the image is. The smile was drawn with eyes slanting upwards, humble looking, that's why it sent a "friendly" image. The context and the drawing outside of the smile is a different topic.

The way they translated him saying "The siren head gets me right here" was something along the lines of "The siren head really resonates with me in my heart" in Japanese, which is so pure. He really does give off supportive dad/mentor vibes. What a fascinating man.

i love how ito immediately knows that long horse is a friendly creature. he describes long horse as fantastical rather than scary which is very fitting. for those who don’t know, long horse is a protecter who warns humans from harmful events and disasters. oh and he smells like cinnamon! one of my favorite creatures from trevor henderson.

I notice Junji Ito finds situational horror more effective than than simple visual horror. While complimenting all of the images, he seemed to be more interested in ones that showed more than just the monster, i.e. Siren Head out in a cemetery or Creature Redacted after realizing the smiling monster has consumed a person. Additionally, while pretty much all of his art is unsettling, it's the stories they're telling that make them into horrifying. The twisted bodies at the end of Amigara Fault are frightening, but knowing the full story of how they ended up that way makes it stick. I wonder what his reaction to something like All Tomorrows would be. Many of the drawings of the imaginings of man's future are gross and scary, but adding in the story of how they came to become that through evolution or genetic manipulation brings it to the next level.

I knew immediately he'd like Siren Head. So much of his own work involves the idea of "ominous forboding", the horror that let's you know it's coming for you instead of just jumping out from behind a trash can or something. He likes the "message of horror", and what is a more grounded, realistic, and ominous signal of the awful that approaches than a siren? Let alone a siren that can come after you so you can't get away...

When he said うん,そうですね, that was the most scared I’ve seen a Japanese person. On a more serious note he probably found the scariest to be the siren head because in Japan; earthquakes are frequent and the sound earthquake sirens makes become associated with fear.

I dunno. I know he's very mellow, but I don't think that means he's not afraid of things. I really think it's impossible to write or create anything truly frightening if nothing scares you. Horror is one of those things that's too personal to do well if you don't write or create out of the place in you that is also afraid of things. It's what makes it feel really electrifying. At least, as a writer, that is what I personally feel to be true. :)

To be fair, this is some weak horror content on the internet. Trevor Henderson has more "unsettling" art, rather than just full-blown psychotic horror art that makes you lose sleep. Really? I honestly thought that's exactly how he'd be, at most, i'd find him a bit more critical of people's works but not much else. The people who really know what fear and emotions are don't show them in needless situations, they told him to judge some scary pictures, and that's what he did... You wouldn't be scared by a jumpscare if someone told you "i'm going to jumpscare you" right?

I love how as an artist he looks I to the details and comments on the symbolisms of a peice of art when he can see it rather than just plainly describing the image. Even with the ones he does just describe he points out the smallest detail and describes why he likes it.

I love how he just quickly assesses what the picture is, gives a quick summary, and moves on, all whilst saying at least one kind thing about each piece. This man's brain is beyond comprehension, none of this scared him, but he was humble enough to play along, and that is part of what makes this dude an icon. Just so grounded yet so from outer space at the same time!

I'm more interested in his view on horror and how he sees other horror media. He's very... imaginative and poetic when talking about it and it's eerily fascinating.
