He says that because when you draw a smile, the eyes play a part to what the context and the feel of the image is. The smile was drawn with eyes slanting upwards, humble looking, that's why it sent a "friendly" image. The context and the drawing outside of the smile is a different topic.

I notice Junji Ito finds situational horror more effective than than simple visual horror. While complimenting all of the images, he seemed to be more interested in ones that showed more than just the monster, i.e. Siren Head out in a cemetery or Creature Redacted after realizing the smiling monster has consumed a person. Additionally, while pretty much all of his art is unsettling, it's the stories they're telling that make them into horrifying. The twisted bodies at the end of Amigara Fault are frightening, but knowing the full story of how they ended up that way makes it stick. I wonder what his reaction to something like All Tomorrows would be. Many of the drawings of the imaginings of man's future are gross and scary, but adding in the story of how they came to become that through evolution or genetic manipulation brings it to the next level.

I knew immediately he'd like Siren Head. So much of his own work involves the idea of "ominous forboding", the horror that let's you know it's coming for you instead of just jumping out from behind a trash can or something. He likes the "message of horror", and what is a more grounded, realistic, and ominous signal of the awful that approaches than a siren? Let alone a siren that can come after you so you can't get away...

I like how almost every time he know exactly what part of it is scary and says he already made a Manga about the same thing

The last picture is from a webtoon called „Nocturne“. I highly recommend it - it’s very scary and very Junji Ito like.

I like the fact that he doesn’t need to tell which of his works remind him of some of these images because we already know it ourselves. He likes Siren head, yeah that’s cool and all, but the real horror is hearing the sound it makes.

I'm more interested in his view on horror and how he sees other horror media. He's very... imaginative and poetic when talking about it and it's eerily fascinating.
