Hi Jenny! Thanks for the tour to a great “candy store” of such beautiful plants and things for the garden. I appreciate that you identify the plants as well as the pricing. I visited a locally owned garden/home center and yes, things are expensive. I told the owner that I overwinter many things to save money. She totally agreed but the pricing is out of their control. I’m happy that they risk buying not sure if people will spend. I can’t wait to see where you plant your purchases!

Prices just keep going up and up.😢 It's nice to splurge on a few special things once in a while though. And I prefer to spend a little more and support local and small businesses whenever I can afford to do so. That Pink A Blue is so beautiful - I've never met a lungwort I didn't love. If only I had a smidge more shade in my yard! 😊

We have a Homestead near me. It doesn't have as big as selection as Davidson Store. I do find the prices high. It is a PW destination nursery for anyone interested.

Someone in my neighborhood has an edgeworthia and it is such a bright spot in the late winter/early spring. Really lovely!

Hi Jenny, my parents have had a Viburnum Nudum “Brandywine” for about a year. And despite the heavy deer pressure, they haven’t gone after the viburnum. PA 7a

Those prices are astronomical. But, I would not be surprised if they are as high here, too. Due to my health issues, I haven’t been to the nurseries in a few years. Here in the Pacific Northwest, deer leave my sarcococca and rhododendron alone, but they ate my azaleas. I am pretty sure they didn’t eat my daphnes, either, but daphnes are difficult to get established and I haven’t been successful yet, for the price that nursery was charging, I would think twice because that’s a lot of money. Sarcococca do smell wonderful in an enclosed area so I would recommend them for a shady spot. Oh, and deer never touch my viburnums, either, but I remember they ate yours.

Have you ever been to Patuxent nursery in Bowie MD? It is just down the road from Davidsonville. Check it out.

This season I am daring myself to not purchase any annuals. I wintered over a few calibrachoa and i am starting a lot of flowers from seed. Whoo hoo!

If you have acidic soil, the Kramer's Rote Heath are great evergreen ground covers. They start blooming around the end of November and go to about the end of April. Gives beautiful color during the drab winter months and as soon as there are some mild days, they are covered in honey bees. Mine have really put on a beautiful show this season. I am in southern PA, zone 6....not too far from you.

You will absolutely love the Edgeworthia. I drove all the way from Greensboro to Charlotte last year to get mine. Wherever you prune it will branch off in threes.

I have been planning to go to Homestead Gardens now that I am retired. How timely that you brought us with you and gave us a tour, Now, more than ever, I can't wait to go! It will be a little bit of a trip from Silver Spring, but I will make a day of it and plan on a lunch after shopping. Any suggestions?

It's just like groceries and cars and everything else. Growers have to pass on their expenses to others. That's just the way it is. I work for a garden center so I know.
