As the Showdown approaches, Port fans will be salivating over the return of their beloved prison bars jumpers to the AFL stage. The prison bar saga is well documented, but it got us thinking about AFL jumpers in more detail.
How have guernseys been regulated in the past? What is the clash policy now? And finally, on a more conceptual level - what do AFL jumpers mean?

I think the real creativity surrounding guernseys is when it comes to the Indigenous strip. I always look forward to seeing every clubs new Indigenous strip because it is something different every year. I think it allows for creativity in a game where tradition and heritage are held with such high prestige.

I remember some of the truly horrible alternate jumper designs from past pre-season comps. Hawthorn's camo pattern and "horse racing" diamonds stand out as the biggest shockers. If that's what you mean by "creative", I'll stick with black and a red sash forever, thank you very much. (PS: We Essendon suppourters still consider the red shorts from the 70s a fashion disaster. At least our current clash jumper is an improvement on the grey-and-red one)

Hey, those red shorts were pretty cool. Would be cool to see clubs experiment with different shorts colours The grey was horrid tho. I despise clubs using non-club colours. For example, white is overused and abused. Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Adelaide - none of these clubs have white, they should never use them. I think the AFL has managed to sort this out in recent years tbh.

I am a Geelong fan, white is our first colour, it's white with blue hoops and thats how the club has always treated it, Geelong is happy to wear white shorts as its our dominant colour. Geelong struck this deal with Collingwood years ago when ever we played each other, Collingwoods first colour is black so the two teams struck a deal where when ever they played, regardless of who had the home game, Collingwood would always wear black shorts and Geelong would always wear white and as a Geelong fan it has been a great deal and I'm sure for Collingwood fans it must have been a great deal as well.

Great video! I come from an ice hockey background, but have watches footy for six years. I always thought it was weird how teams would regularly have a clash. In hockey, the home jersey is always a coloured jersey, like an AFL team's primary. For away games, they wear white jerseys with stripes or other details in the team colours. I think that always works great.

Unfortunately common sense went out the window with these clubs, as most are very old clubs with incredibly parochial fans that think changing the jersey at away games to prevent obvious clashes is some kind of blasphemy. Pretty childish attitude in a professional sport with so many colour and jersey clashes, and especially when the rest of the world has no issue resolving these clashes in professional sports!

No way! As someone who's tried to get into the NBA, the player movement and lack of respect to the teams colours creates too much instability for me to latch on to. I like that AFL clubs are proud of their colours, even to the point of Eddie Maguire going barney over the Port Adelaide piers. I think clubs do experiment with different designs more than this video may suggest, but I agree there could be more (your Essendon suggestion for more detail makes sense). I think the inverted home jumper design is just the current phase.

I love the inverted home jumper for clash/away. Been saying it for decades. Retains the traditional jumper that fans love, but also gives something a lil different. That said, the city jumper idea is great too. I love the idea of incorporating more of the club's history and culture into the jumpers. Brilliant suggestion. Hope it takes off. And I agree about you opinion on the NBA - I don't follow it, just love that AFL clubs have very unique and separate identities. Really makes them stand out. The purple of freo, the teal of Port, the sash of dons & tiges, the orange of GWS God i hope of Darwin ever gets a team, it has to be green and blue. Maybe a lil orange. Great Video, while I find the idea of a green Geelong jumper, I much prefer that teams are always wearing (with white sometimes an exception) their colours and them alone. Some of these clash jumpers can even double as a heritage jumper... For example my dees, our clash jumper was / is based on the jumper we wore from '75 to '86. Clash jumpers are great ways for club's to reinvent an old jumper... examples: Sydney, Collingwood, Brisbane (sort of), Hawthorn, St Kilda... Then you have West coast, both of their kits are slight redesigns of old kits.

The thing with port power is the prison bar jumper isn’t their original jumper, but they seem to have a fixation with it. Port power and the port Adelaide magpies are 2 different clubs. Por Adelaides original jumper was more like Geelongs jumper with a lighter blue, then there was different versions of the jumper with different colours until 1902.

As a Pies supporter, I have no issue with Port wearing their prison bars guernsey on special occasions; it's part of their rich heritage and they should be allowed to pay tribute to that. However, I think that's where it should stop. Heritage is important, but in the AFL, they are the Port Adelaide POWER, not the Port Adelaide Magpies.

@@lukeslayer it's the AFL mate not the VFL. Port came into the league with an already rich history but obviously couldn't use the Magpie name. By your logic, the accomplishments by all clubs prior to 1990 should be erased. Some of the old NFL teams have a similar attachment to their old jerseys. They may wear something interesting once a year to have a different jersey to sell the fans, but they stick to very old motifs, following their original (or very early) jerseys pretty closely. Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants are good examples of teams that haven't ever (or only very rarely/changed back to old designs) changed their designs.

I honestly think that every away team should wear white shorts regardless of wearing the home, away or clash top. There’s slight misinformation/misunderstanding of certain other sports too. The away team wears grey in baseball (historic homage to unwashed travel kits of the past), basketball home team usually wear white. Soccer provides a bit of a different example as with relegation/promotion it’s conceivable that the century+ ago that Burnley, West Ham and Villa didn’t even know they were all on claret and blue due to geographic factors, furthermore with 100ish clubs in the same tiered soccer pile, it’s impossible to expect unique designs. But also; each club has only three shirts, like the AFL, and away strips have a lot of history themselves. There’s a lot of marketing yes; but there’s a home/away/clash format as well. Arsenal: Red/Black/Pink, Lions: Maroon/Fitzroy Lion/Bears clash. With heritage and indigenous guernseys thrown in, it costs more to collect AFL kit.

High time the league put the foot down and made every team develop a proper change strip* St Kilda are fortunate on this front, in that they have had several jumper designs in their history (i.e. well before the era of the national league). I keep trying to push the case with the club to bring back the 1919-1922 mainly red jumper - the shape of which is something like Port's current home jumper. That jumper is a thing of beauty. No dice so far. While we're on the subject, can someone get GWS and Gold Coast to design some real footy jumpers. The Giants' one is passable, but doesn't look like a footy jumper. The Suns' one is laughable. * (except Collingwood, because we're all scared of their fans)

The AFL clubs are losing huge commercial value by not valuing an alternate strip more. They should definitely have more fun with it, like the saints Yellow cross jumper from about 20 years back. It's a novelty and niche that diehards will embrace. Also, the recent trend of removing the apparel sponsors logo from the jumper is a shocking call. Most New Balance and ISC teams now have no obvious sports branding on the jumper. The Demons, Saints, Eagles and Lions jumpers all suck now cos they have stupid brands in prime positions at the center-top of the jumper. Anyone into sport knows that sponsorship from legitimate sport brands like Nike, Adidas and yes, even New Balance, elevates the status of the item. To remove this does detract from the fashion and marketability of these jumpers.

Personally, I have no problem with clubs sporting their old heritage wear (a'la PAFC with their prison bars), but any major changes that go against history (or even some in line with it) are just greed based decisions, for a supposedly not-for-profit league/teams. We don't have a sporting culture entirely ruined by money (like soccer in Europe), but we're certainly getting there are breakneck speed. The VFL/AFL is a frankly terrible organisation that has no right officiating rules and running its league, especially when it's aims are entirely driven by the pursuit of profit. I know you've raised this in the video; but we shouldn't give any leeway to the AFL and its clubs to try and rinse more money from less-than-discerning fans on supposedly 'clash' jumpers. The game is not that hard to follow with the current jumpers as is; we don't need more commercialised crap being forced down our throats. In short; up the VFL/AFL, up those that destroyed amateurism and the state leagues, up the greed-based ethos of modern sport, and most of all; up yours Oakley! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Clash guernseys are not necessary. Can we please stop comparing ourselves to other sports? Team colours are tribal. Tribalism is what we love. The saying goes: “play for the jumper.” Also, can someone please call out the fact that collingwood’s “home” jumper has only been in existence for less than 20 years? It’s completely different to the jumper they wore for over 100 years.

It isn't just tradition its recognisability, clubs are united by the town, colours and mascots of their teams. What's the point in arbitrarily changing their gear? Sorry, just no. There's plenty of variation clubs can have with designing clash/alt jumpers using their current colours that can a) be effective clash solutions b) experiment with new ideas c) respect the clubs identity/history. The problem is that the people at clubs who design these jumpers are just unimaginative - which is where we get the "make it the home jumper but with side panels". Even still, fans of Collingwood for example are completely satisfied with the current jumper arrangement, with the clash being an effective solution vs any team as well as a nod to that inversed jumper once being our home kit itself. There simply isn't a need to make them wear pink for no reason when a bit part of "black and white" is the absence of colour. Likewise will all other teams, there's just so many colour/design combinations that haven't been tried with their existing club colours that would make interesting and effective alternate strips. Also that Pies all black vs Cats all white is one of the cleanest matchups in the whole league, nothing wrong with it at all.

I am not actually sure why you have used the NBA analogy and compared it back to the prison bars debate? The only grounds Collingwood actually have to deny port the rights to wear the strip is if they are 1. The home team and 2. If port is playing them. A genuine clash means that yes port Adelaide have to play in a different strip to prison bars. Obviously I do think Collingwood are laughable for denying port the right to wear the strips but only in the instance where either they play collingwood at home or port is playing any other team.

The "clash" issue rose up when Channel 9 briefly had the rights. Never any drama until then - even when the Bears were playing. It should have been made very clear to incoming teams - like Port who seem to be the only club with a chip on their shoulder about it - that the colours already in use and the patterns were off limits. Port should have been told you can be teal and silver. West Coast, Fremantle, Gold Coast, and GWS all managed it. Brisbane did a solid when they merged with the Lions and took the maroon from the Bears and replaced the Red of Fitzroy with it. So basically it's the butt hurt Kochie. They could have stayed in the SAFL.

You delibretly left out the MAIN REASON why Collingwood has an issue with Port coming into the AFL with their jumper and im pretty sure you did it on purpose. In the SANFL Port Adelaide were/are the magpies. One of the SIGNED AGREEMENTS they made to come into the AFL for them to be accepted by the league and all other clubs INCLUDING COLLINGWOOD, is that they cant market themselves as the magpies OR wear their black and white prison bar jumpers in the AFL. They accepted these terms. And since then they have tried endlessly to get it changed and try every trick in the book from peer pressure, to media hit pieces to post game switches to try and get their way instead of doing the right thing, THE THING THEY AGREED TO IN THE FIRST PLACE and just make their NEW JUMPER AND COLOURS mean something in the AFL. The Port/Collingwood jumper issue is unique but im pretty sure if another team tried to join the afl also known as the bombers or blues or demons then this issue would flare up with them too.

There’s always this claim that port signed an agreement to never wear the prison bar guernsey once they entered the AFL but neither Collingwood or the AFL have ever produced this document when port have wanted to wear it. If this agreement actually exists then why did Eddie never take port to court over it rather than making a new agreement in bad faith to let port wear the guernsey once per season during heritage round (which he knew was about to be discontinued)? Why was this document not produced last time Collingwood and the AFL didn’t let port wear it rather than the AFL threatening to take away premiership points?
@devilwarr1or
@devilwarr1or Жыл бұрын
@Alex Soundias lol that's a lie to say the document doesn't exist just because they don't show it. Eddie has stated numerous times if they dared wore the jumper without permission they would end up in court and port also has never done it in game without permission. If there was no document then there would literally be nothing stopping port doing it now then would it? The most recent contract about all this was drawn up in 2007 and it's easily available to find with a quick google search. What's so hard to understand? The conditions of them entering was they gave up their logo, song, nickname and jumper, they agreed....
@alexsoundias1974
@alexsoundias1974 Жыл бұрын
@@devilwarr1or Eddie says a lot of shit that he doesn't back up. Again, if he was adamant this document exists then why has port worn the prison bars on several occasions when we all know he doesn't want them to? Why did he make a new agreement in 2007 rather than just pointing to the old one and taking port to court? The reason port don't wear it anyway is because the AFL threatened to take away premiership points. If the threat was just a fine then they likely would've done it. Those were the conditions of entering and it's literally what they've done. Giving up the prison bars as their main jumper and wearing it once per season to celebrate the club's heritage aren't mutually exclusive.
@devilwarr1or
@devilwarr1or Жыл бұрын
@Alex Soundias haha you're still ignoring the reality of the situation that proves there must be some form of agreement in writing to prevent it! If there wasn't, they would just wear it. If the afl threatened them with taking away points, then take it to court and appeal it..... They don't...because they know they would lose in court!!!! Eddie didn't become Collingwood president until late 98! Port were trying to get into the afl for years before that and came in 1997.
@chadchadderton
@chadchadderton Жыл бұрын
@@devilwarr1or you made multiple lies in your comment, but then proceeded to act predatory online and claim that alex lied about the document not being proven to exist... which is objectively the truth. you keep on saying they agreed to this and that, but never have you once actually proven where they agreed to it... aside from mentioning eddie like he's the second coming of jesus. the same eddie who for years supporter and befriended joffa (a known and now convicted child rapist) you also asked why port wouldn't wear it if there is no agreement, but when presented with the objectively true reason why you conveniently ignored it? that's beyond weird. Port were threatened with on-field sanctions, hence why they didn't wear it... never once did the AFL (who own the IP) threaten or even mention litigation, nor have the AFL ever spoken about the existence of some magical cover all document that port apparently signed. And again, when the borderline illegal actions by eddie that also included the factually correct statement that the AFL did agree to let port wear the bars at certain points in a season was mentioned you suddenly fell deaf and decided not to mention it whatsoever... once again conveniently ignoring something that doesn't suit the argument that eddie told you to write... what's so hard to understand? collingwood are latching on to an IP that they don't own and a guernsey that they openly copied from another team... yet they attempt to gate keep a design that isn't really even that close to the collingwood design whatsoever.

Its not difficult is it. Don't wear white shorts away. Think of the whole strip. Its stupid for the Eagles to wear white shorts when they're playing a team with white on their jumper! Why would Carlton wear white shorts. When it just looks more like Collingwood/Geelong. They should both always wear their historic jumpers with white shorts. Melbourne played Collingwood with a light royal blue jumper and white shorts. But why white when Collingwood wore white! Wouldn't commonsense say red. If they get the shorts right you may find that teams don't end up having to wear alternative jumpers as much. Also Essendon and Richmond could more often wear their home strip but tinker with the design. For example Essendon wider sash, red trimmings and collar red shorts. They'd look a lot less than Saint Kilda who already have white on their jumper. End result is that both teams benefit and wear home strip. Richmond vs Carlton/Bulldogs shouldn't be wearing whte shorts clearly. They should be yellow (or black) with the home jumper tinkered a bit with a wider yellow sash and all the trimmings. Similary Bulldogs can wear red shorts against Collingwood, not white...

I live in Brisbane and when I go to the Broncos Leagues Club they have a wall filled with all the different geurseys they have worn in their comparitively brief period that they have been around, and it makes me feel sad for their supporters that they dont have a long and proud tradition of wearing the same jumper for over 100 years. oh wow, you clearly aren't educated. Prior to the 1997 season the AFL awarded a license to Port Adelaide... the SANFL club. What happened was the SANFL club entered the AFL and refounded a new entity to hold a SANFL licence as at the time the SANFL did not allow an AFL club to hold a SANFL licence (including the crows funnily enough). So actually the AFL club "Port Adelaide" is the 'original' team foudned in 1870 whereas the current "SANFL club" was actually founded post 1997. The AFL and SANFL entities were also separate because of forced separation by the SANFL (mentioned previously) until some time around 2010 I believe (can't exactly remember the year)... where the SANFL finally sorted out their issue with PAFC and allowed "PAFC" to hold both an AFL and SANFL licence, the entity now also holds an AFLW licence. make sense?

You can't have your cake and eat it too. The Port Adelaide Football CLUB was granted an AFL licence, it formed a new squad and assembled a new TEAM. The club, its money, its board, its home, its facilities, its supporter base, the enemy hatred, the HISTORY all moved with the CLUB which owned it to the AFL. The TEAM also once dressed in Blue and White and Magenta after that, the TEAM was also known as the Portonians, the Seaside men, the Magentas among other names. These TEAMs all belonged to the one club, and doesn't mean each nickname change equals new CLUB. It's all well and good to troll Port supporters, and have a good laugh about it, but when you actually write things like this as if your trolling lies are factual all you do is make a fool of yourself.
