@JG-bw6lu Ok, firstly, who the fuck asked? Jesus, soccer fans are insufferable. Anyway, with the best Australian soccer players going to the big stage in Europe, there's no way that the A-league can outgrow the AFL, and without the personal connection to cities or areas, there's no way the premier league or any other European league will gain the same cult following by the masses in Aus like the AFL does. AFL isn't played on an international level and it probably never will be, so every football fan is a soccer fan when the world cup or the Olympics is on, but just like how soccer has been a way of life for most of Europe, AFL has been the sport for Australia for more than a century. despite being popular only in one country, it's the 5th highest sport in average attendance, the MCG, the home of Football, is the third most attended stadium in the world, and every year the AFL grand final pulls attendance greater than any domestic soccer league game in the world. So no, I don't think soccer will overtake football in Australia. Thank you for your take.

I was born and raised in Brisbane, and was just appalled at how 'our' new club's birth was bungled by Cronin and that soon-to-be criminal Skase. Awful jumper, a 'Koala Bear' (!) as a symbol, and not even playing in Brisbane! My now sadly departed Dad swore never to go to a match until they moved to the place they belonged. The first season had some encouraging results but Skase was spending other people's money and we nearly folded when he went bust and skipped the country. But three years after the members took over, and two years after we moved to the Gabba, we were in the finals, giving the eventual premiers Carlton a good run for their money.

Fitzroy tried to be privately owned by a company instead of opting for a relocation to Brisbane at the end of 1986. Ross Oakley quickly squashed that & the relocation proposals to Horbart & Canberra in the early 90’s.
@MRHenHen4 жыл бұрын
MisterTeeBag You the club & it’s history is far from dead just because the name Fitzroy doesn’t exist anymore in the AFL. After the merger the club still retained it’s board of directors, shareholders & social club members but had no team & went into recess until 1998 when the University Red’s who played in the VAFA at Brunswick Street Oval went broke & the Fitzroy took over the club & have since then won premierships in the VAFA. The Fitzroy Football Club has been financially stable for a while with a seniors, under 18’s, women’s & children’s sides. All the money from memberships, merchandise & sausage sizzle & raffles going directly back to the club. They have even built a healthy relationship with the Brisbane Lions where they have held joint family day’s together at Brunswick Street Oval. www.fitzroyfc.com.au/

When North Melbourne won the flag in 1999 they where still partially owned by Carlton who eventually sold all of their shares back to North Melbourne to pay for the legal fees from the salary cap breaches in the early 2000’s

@Suq Madiq Western Sydney Kangaroos would've sounded better. I don't know how NM missed those opportunities.
@ianhinson28294 жыл бұрын
@Suq Madiq Bert would be the exception to the rule, or has since changed his mind. I remember Fitzroy supporters feeling angry and disenfranchised when their team was forcibly shut down and "merged". The few I spoke to around that time said words to the effect of "I no longer have a team.😭I'm NOT going to barrack for Brisbane. They're not Fitzroy." (I seem to recall even Bert saying that back then.) So if you think Brisbane inherited an instant Melbourne supporter base you'd be very wrong. Lack of support in Melbourne plagued them for many years and possibly still does. South Melbourne's relocation on the other hand was quite different to that, and South's supporters (mostly) continued to support the Swans.

Would love to see a video on West Coasts entry into the league. Not sure if true but the debt they had in the early days was attributed to the VFL requiring them to pay large sums to enter the VFL which was going through financial problems themselves (steming from overpaying players to steal from other state leagues?).

I can tell you (remember your post?). Eagles had to pay $4m in 1987. Also from memory had to pay for all travel for themselves and opposition team. So 22 weeks of travel. Eagles basically saved VFL clubs. Richmond and Collingwood had for example been stealing players from each other and over paying and were in real financial strife. So VFL had no alternative but to give licenses to interstate clubs and then tried their best to rip them off. I'm a big Eagles fan and I reckon they've done it harder than anyone apart from qld and nsw clubs and they've survived and the biggest club in the league now.

@ibd1977 Жыл бұрын
Both clubs were formed and controlled under the SANFL sub licence into the AFL until 2015. The SANFL purged both clubs of revenue, leaving them with significant debt after they were handed over to the AFL as a part of the Adelaide Oval deal. The AFL will not release the clubs until the debt is cleared and the 2 clubs can stand as independent entities. To be honest I am not sure what's holding back the Crows from membership control as they have been in better financial position than Port for the last decade or so.
@BDub202411 ай бұрын

Yes looks like the democratic rights of the fans are paramount in club policy’s , that is great !! One Question though who controls the AFL .??The competition organised is not a league in the true sense , there is no formal arrangement that teams play each other twice in a season , there is no draw for the fixtures merely an orchestration of the games program to maximise profit.. Even the Finals venues are arranged for what ever reason the “League”. decides at times leaving clubs that have earned a home final seriously disadvantaged. !! That is not the fair go expected and respected in Australia !!
@TheJonkerr74 жыл бұрын
Oh god...yawn... "not a league in the true sense" - just in a sense that people got used to, no true about it, all a league is is a group of teams that play in the same competition regardless of how the comp functions, whether they play each other twice is immaterial. The maximising of revenue is responsible management. It allows players to maximise their earnings and funds directly and indirectly the jobs of a hella lot of people...it also means that when clubs need it there is funding available as well as funding for game development etc. Run it like the old days pal, and it will not survive.
@billymorrison79194 жыл бұрын
Jon Kerr What a load of bullshit, any competition is a nonsense if orchestrations are required for survival . The very word competition imply’s striving for success from an even footing!! Orchestrations on the other hand guarantee biased interference at all levels . Where could there be satisfaction for anyone following a sport where outcomes are influenced by other than skill and ability !! Have another Yawn noddy !! , Your way would be a nightmare for normal people !!
