Retired Planetarium guy here: Let me point out that the very bright light in the southwest after sundown is Venus. The almost as bright light in the northeast is Jupiter. A few hours later, the bright star Sirius rises in the southeast. When it is low in the sky it tends to rapidly twinkle all sorts of colors. This is an effect of our atmosphere. When I was working, I always got calls about it at this time of year.

Only problem is there ARE actual drones, big big EXPENSIVE drones, that shouldn't be out flying at night, in clusters, and shouldn't be flying near military bases, following military ships, or shutting down airports. This many people can't be just "seeing planets and airplanes" I'm a skeptic, but I just can't dismiss all that. It bothers me how much Elon is deep in all Americas business, so many documents stolen kept in a resort bathroom, foreign billionaires in and out of such resort. As a landscaper, I encounter drones fairly often, and I'm always surprised! There are countless ways to react. I try to summon my curiosity, in those moments, to outweigh my fear or anger. From a curious state I'm ready for anything but I'm less likely to respond to a threat that doesn't exist. That said, I have it on good authority that the aerial phenomena currently being observed are (mostly) Sasquatch. Although Bigfoot are quite large when they appear in that form, they can travel as a ball of light and take any shape or size when doing so. Any kid can own a drone that does formation flying. It doesn't require a company or even a large commercial drone. Otherwise, though, anyone who has seen a drone show (they're pretty cool!) knows that stuff like this is easy to do and relatively inexpensive. Besides, most of the sightings were obviously airplanes and not drones. The NYTimes did a piece yesterday and the first picture they showed were lights in a pattern at night. Guess what it was? It was a picture of the skies over a small airport and the patterns were airplanes in landing patterns getting ready to land, plus a few taking off. So... there's no point interviewing anyone. These might as well be people reporting that thousands of other people they don't know are walking down main street.

Florida Man story. A police drone was deployed looking for a suspect in some criminal event. The drone was near our Florida Man's residence, so he assumed it was looking for him and shot it down. I discovered this 20 years ago doing a morning radio in a major city. I would say "Did anyone see that UFO sighted near the airport last night?" Then I described the colored lights on an airplane. Calls would come in by the dozens from people who "saw" the UFO.

Likely, there exists a DoD contractor test-deploying a prototype drone. Similar swarms have been reported in various rural venues in the west and southwest during recent years. Bad actors would simply just strike, as opposed dithering about.

Sometime in the 60's there was a UFO sighting mania in North Alabama, probably helped by our proximity to Huntsville and the space race. One of my buddies family ran a dry cleaning business so had access to unlimited very light clear plastic bags. We'd tie the top closed with sewing thread, expand the bottom with a cross of sericea stalks, and glue a bottle cap at the cross. A cotton ball soaked in denatured alcohol made an eerie glow that became the only part visible when the miniature hot air balloon lifted off. Not sure how many UFO sightings we created. It was irresponsible but hey, we were 13 year old. Now everybody and his/her brother has a drone, it's likely much if this is due to pranksters of all ages.

The more credible reports seem to be concentrated in restricted airspace around or near various military installations. Where else would the military perform test runs of drones that would be high enough to provide a potential hazard to aircraft?

It would have been helpful if people like Alejandro Mayorkas hadn't done public media events where they told us they didn't know what was going on. That just feeds craziness. It also didn't help that the officials seem to have two ways of "counting." One is counting every report (even though some may be reporting the same thing) and the other is just counting events (but combining all the reports.) Another thing that didn't help is people reporting these "drones" as targeting military installations and the Pentagon. It all leads to a lot more questions and not enough reasonable answers.

I live in northern NJ surrounded by supposed "drones". I'm also a aviation enthusiast whose been looking up at the sky for as long as I could remember watching planes, as I live a half hour from Newark airport. I have yet to see a drone, but I'm surrounded by people that claim to have seen them. A simple flight tracking app can confirm if what you're seeing is a plane. I don't doubt there may be real drones, but I think a HUGE amount are misidentified and just aircraft, both civil and commercial.

The FAA should have all the info needed to explain everything since all drones are supposed to be registered. Drones are now allowed to be flown at night with some restrictions. If the initial effort was not government based then it is likely corporate based. If so, revealing that information might affect companies and the stock market. It's just a thought.
