The problem is Jack Harlow hasn’t proved himself enough for all this hype. He’s not as bad as the backlash makes it seem but he has a lot to prove. The problem with these types of overly hyped artists is that he’ll come out of nowhere and win a rap album grammy he didn’t earn when there are rappers who put blood sweat and tears into their art just to be labelled urban contemporary or whatever typa shit they like to call it. That’s the real issue. We gotta stop hyping these mediocre rappers for doing the bare minimum and being applauded because it wouldn’t normally be expected from them. Reading these comments and I think it’s really important that people understand that this is hip hop. I really love honest’s video but a lot of what he covers is pop music and I think a lot of people commenting may not be considering that Jack Harlow is being held to rapper standards I think a pop music star can have a bad first album and bounce back or a really good first album and a bad second one but in hip hop all of the people who are considered the greats have incredible 3 album runs straight out of the gate and your first album in hip hop is your make or break. Whether or not that’s fair is up to you but I encourage you to take time out to listen to some of those artists I named first albums it might give a bit more insight into why the internet could be feeling the need to humble jack. He got a lot of love before this album which doesn’t really happen in hip hop. J Cole and Kendrick were fairly unknown and drake had hit after hit and was still looked down upon until his album so there’s a lot of nuance definitely interesting enough to have the conversation tho

Here’s my perspective on this whole Jack Harlow situation. The entire lead up to this album lead people to believe that this album would be his magnum opus. Jack and his team are partly to blame for the lofty expectations people had. He was being hailed as the next great “pen” in rap. He did interviews talking about how he wanted to be taken seriously as a rapper, and how he was the best of his generation. He talked about how was going to be the one to bring lyrical rap back. He said this album was going to show that he was hiphop to his core. Kanye tweeted about Jack being “Top 5 right now”. People were hailing him as the next Drake. On top of all that big talk, Jack Harlow got an industry push unlike any I have ever seen. At least for a rapper. This man was doing an insane amount of interviews. He’s plastered all over the internet. He was even at the Met Gala. All this push. All this bragging. All this big talk. Only for Jack Harlow to release a mediocre album. I would even venture to say subpar. The production is basic and the bars are elementary. Worst of all (in my opinion) this album void of any semblance of emotional depth. CHTKMY is probably the most hollow album I’ve listened to in a while. I agree with Shawn Cee when he said this is “I walk in, I see hoe. I fuck it: the album”. What really pisses me off is people having the nerve to compare Jack Harlow to Mac Miller. Some people even have the nerve to suggest he’s better. This is kind of an insult to Mac Miller’s legacy. Suggesting that an artist with the musical talent, range, creativity, and emotional depth that Mac Miller had is on the same level, or below Jack Harlow is insane. People also like to bring up Blue Slide Park, and how poorly it was received. This comparison doesn’t really holdup, for several reasons. 1. Mac Miller didn’t have the machine of a big label and Dj Drama behind him. 2. Blue Slide Park was Mac’s first studio album, CHTKMY is Jack’s second. 3. BSP had tracks that showed the talent Mac had, and the emotional depth he was capable of. Namely, Of the Soul and One Last Thing. Finally, Mac Milker was 19 when BSP came out, Jack is 24. By the time Mac Miller was 24 he had Macadelic, Watching Movies With the Sound Off, Faces, GO:OD AM, and Divine Feminine under his belt. He also had the work he did as Delusional Thomas and Larry Lovestein. Bottom line is Jack Harlow’s music is technically subpar, and generally uninteresting (both sonically and lyrically). Most of what I see on the internet is people pointing that out. I think the people so zealously defending him are adding to the push back. You’re immediately branded a hater for even the most basic criticism. Some people are even call your racist for criticizing him. This inevitably is going cause people to push back harder. Because most people are simply judging Jack Harlow the way he wants to be judged, as a hip-hop artist. Most of the people defending him are judging him as a pop act. As a hip-hop act he does not live up to the hype that’s been made around him, by any stretch of the imagination. Most of people defending him clearly don’t listen to hip-hop. Especially the people saying. “At least he’s not a mumble rapper”. There are tons of underground and on the fence artist, both black and non-black , that are much more deserving of being where Jack is now. Mac Miller deserved to be where Jack is now, though I’m not sure he wanted to be. All of the major artist on TDE and Dreamville deserve to be where Jack is now. He adds little to nothing of value to the culture, yet he’s being touted as the next great. That’s most likely what pisses a lot of people off.

What Jack fails to realize is that the personality should be supplicating great music, not the other way around. Even Drake, who has a similar formula, still managed to never lose sight of releasing good work, with Take Care, NWTS and IYRTITL and arguably Views. Drake had a stretch of quality material which was backed up by his persona, and even at times influenced the genre. Even today, while he may not be on top of his game over a decade later, he still doesn't slack on his feature on Jack's album, almost at a point where he's basically the shining light on the project. Drake knows he still needs to atone for hard work if he wants longevity, which is why Jack needs to spend less time in radio station pods and KZbin interviews and spend more time in the studio. But I don't think he'll get the memo. _"I been in the crib with the phones off,_ _I been at the house taking no calls,_ _I done hit the stride got my shit goin'_ _In the six cooking with the wrist motion_ _Drapes closed, I don't know what time it is_ _I'm still awake, I gotta shine this year_ _I could never ever let the streets down_ _Haven't left the condo for a week now"_ - *Drake, IYRTITL, 2015*

Figured he just make a better one later on. Takes a lot for me to just drop an artist because of a mid album. He’s got hella potential and seems like a sweet guy that got caught up in the hype, and pumping out promotions and music. Guessing because of his label forcing it. I’m sure he’s learned and we’ll see something better soon. Kinda shocked to see “hate train” when people were hyping him up like a month ago. I can’t keep up. 😂

This is what happens when you sound like Drake 2.0. I gave the album a solid listen and nothing stood out to me. Especially when you get Drake and Wayne as features. Even the songs they are featured on were "meh". I almost seemed as though they were doing him a favor. Right now he stands out as a feature artist just like G-Eazy. But they don't seem talented enough to make a full body of work.

People are tied of him plain and simple. The internet turned on him because he's way to popular for his own good. We used to say he was the shit and it made the fame go to his head. Now he's got an ego and he's stuck in his own head. He's acting way too cocky and confident for his place in hip hop. He's exuding the "I'm king of rap" energy, without having said status to back him up. He needs an ego check.

I think that Jack Harlow has way too much confidence to release an album as inoffensive as this He has charisma, but honestly if he didn’t he wouldn’t have been anywhere near where he is now His music is average, whether it be the production, his flow, his voice, his lyrics, none of them are special I like the guy, but he is just nothing special. If he was at a smaller level of popularity it would probably be a different conversation His work is too safe to be respected. Is he a decent enough rapper, yes. Top 5? Nowhere near

he hasn't proved himself enough as a rapper for all his hype. There's all this hype about him making him seem great and mighty when he's not. He's no different than every other mediocre white rapper but he's being treated like the "new version of white rap". He's the type of overhyped artist to come out of nowhere and undeservedly win a Grammy or some shit. He's got a way to go before his musical track record matches the hype he's gotten. Another reason he's getting hated is because he got pushed in our faces since What's Poppin' and people are tired of hearing about him and seeing his goddamn face everywhere we go. There's only so much you can hype someone before people get tired of the hype.

Jack Harlow is a very likable artist but I think people have a problem with how fast is come up has become . It's almost like the industry is trying to set him up to be the next Kendrick or Drake and he hasn't had the accolades or been in the industry that long. His fan base is just getting off the ground. Industry baby was a huge song but let's be very clear that is not his song that is a Lil Nas X song. We need time to like get used to him instead of the industry pushing him on people that's what's everybody rejecting this.

I think it's cause most rap fans didn't like him very much in the first place. He was generally considered the poor man's Drake, and Drake has not been seen very well for the past few years. He raps like a boring Big Sean on an uninteresting Drake beat, and that's a terrible combo(This can be heard on Way Out and Churchill Downs, where Big Sean and Drake both wash him in charisma and lyrical skill). The internet was drowned in Harlow love based on his flirty vibe and assumed this would translate to his music. That did him wrong I think in the end. He called himself the best, got a Kanye and Drake cosign, and released a bad album. The rap community can't let that go. At the end of the day, Jack is just a less cringey (and at this moment less talented) G-Eazy.

I’m honestly so disappointed that First Class was his first individual #1 hit 😂 I’m a HUGE Jack fan, in no small part because I’m also from Louisville, and I guess I’m just a sucker for a hometown hero… but First Class was atrocious to me 😅 I still listen to it bc the Fergie sample is undeniably sick, but the lyrics make me cringe and I feel like his flow suffers on the song. He has much better songs, and I’d even go so far as to say there are better songs on this most recent album, even though it seems like everyone hates it lol. I’m literally embarrassed for him that this album is the one that came out at the peak of his popularity. Add to that First Class being a #1 hit?? Ugh :p No wonder ppl are writing him off. Like many of his fans though, I really just hope that all this lights a fire under him to get serious and go hard on his next project!

I don’t think people should be taking his success that seriously or deeply simply because there are endless artists who came before jack that got meaningless songs to go viral and or their personality was the main show over the music. As much as drake is good he too relies on viral songs to lead the album in sales and in popularity. So it’s not really that different in terms of strategy but again someone like jack Harlow’s success shouldn’t be taken that seriously to point where people are bitter on Twitter over his success. Just let him live his life.

@chichilafemme63362 жыл бұрын
Honestly with the amount of people and reviews I’m assuming his album wasn’t that great tho some may be exaggerating bc it’s just mid not horrendous. I think that’s what happens when something gets hyped up a lot, if it isn’t amazing, it’s gonna disappoint even if it’s not bad but just mediocre. Which is the case with him, between industry baby, and of course and most importantly first class, with the hits, and him being hyped up on social media, it was bound to happen. it sucks because the hate is not deserved but unfortunately when a celeb makes it big, starts gaining a lot of fans, mainstream attention and starts appearing every where, people start to get “tired” of them, and are just waiting for the celeb to miss the mark with a project so they can justify their hatred. I don’t think this is career ending tho, bc if there’s one thing i see, once they public’s perception of a celebrity goes to one extreme it’s bound to swing to the other extreme. Just watch, people are gonna be over hate him and then he’ll gain sympathy after awhile and eventually he’ll be well liked again as long as he stays in the spotlight. It’s happened to lil nas x, it’s happened to Taylor swift, Beyoncé, Ariana grande, Anne Hathaway etc. it’s just apart of the journey unfortunately. I do like him, he’s one of my celebrity crushes so I would like to see more of him. I think him and his team just needs to regroup for the next project but at least this album sold well. He needs to focus on creating a more solid artistic direction that still performs commercially well.
