@@Chubblot Its a 3rd level subclass. So Lairian may give you an option. But I found her around level 3 anyway. She did however piss off my Evil Warlock. So he killed her.

Gale already gets enough to start at level 2, though you do need to manually level him up when you get him, so unless they lock her subclass it might be hard to enforce the choice without annoying people who like to have some control over companion growth. Probably for the best if your evil warlock sided with the goblins haha. She doesn't sound like she'll stick around after that anyway.

@@Chubblot Its possible they just do a recommended tag on Zealot when you get to level her to 3rd. Goblins were to low a creature for my Warlock. It was interesting talking to Shadowheart about not getting used to "saving the day"

Tiefling lady barbarian would be SOOOO cool. I've been really excited to see her added to the party roster and now even moreso, if this turns out to be true! I do love SH and Lae'zel but the ladies so far are a little underwhelming compared to the male companions atm, at least in the current stage of the game. Also hope they give Karlach a more muscled-model, I want to be fully immersed in the idea that she can crush me with her bare hands :)

@@Xemnas248 Thanks mate! I did look in to the viability of being the "datamining" guy but there are some horror stories of people having their channels shut down for sharing datamined info. One guy got I think multiple strikes because he was digging up DLC info for a Bandai game and posting vids on it. I think it depends on the company in question - Larian are cool and they probably anticipated people would mine the game, hence why they redacted a lot of lines but left the logic to trigger them in place. But I'd hate to try my luck with another developer and wake up to find the channel gone.

8:21 "A paladin derives their power from an oath, not specifically a god, don't they?" Actually, no. That is only true in core D&D, not in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Paladins derive their power from a deity via an oath. Specifically, they access their powers through indirect manipulation of the Weave, as their deities provide that power for them. For example, a paladin could swear an oath to duty (or justice). As long as they kept to that oath, Torm (or Tyr) would provide them with their powers (the paladins didn't even have to know that such a deity smiled upon them). Their devotion is to their oath, not a god (though they certainly can worship a god), but a deity is still where they derive their powers (even if they don't know it). They didn't have to worship these gods, or even be aware of their presence, just be true to the oath that was in a particular deity's portfolio. Check out older Realms material or the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Example, SCAG p.23 "Other practitioners of divine magic discover and nurture their *gods-given* power entirely on their own", and SCAG p.131: "that god can reward the faithful with a measure of divine power, *making that person a paladin*". Forgotten Realms Style Guide says: "Paladins are warriors of unusual virtue and piety *rewarded by a good god with divine power*". Tldr; paladins don't need to worship a god in the Forgotten Realms, but they still derive their powers from them. It would be *very strange* for one not to, especially when they'd be crushed forever in a wall of non-believers (though Wizards recently published an errata saying this wasn't the case). I was just addressing the first part at 8:21 that "a paladin derives their power from an oath, not specifically a god, don't they?" Ed followed up his tweet with "What makes you a paladin is a “sacred oath,” and therefore the support of the gods", which is what I was trying to say. :)

Idk man you might’ve been on to something. Zealot Barbarians aren’t necessary gifted powers (based on the wording) but inspired to channel their rage into Divine power, but unlike paladins wouldn’t lose their powers (exception: oath breakers) if fallen out of alignment or oath. If Paladin is just a place holder, it could be an appropriate one for a Path of the Zealot Barbarian.

It will be interesting to see when Karlach gets introduced into early access and how much is changed from datamined content. Barbarian and Paladin are her two most likely classes aside from being another fighter which would be disappointing as it would conflict with Lae'zel and her usage in the party. However, as you said the Asmodeus tiefling is tied to her character model which is subject to change as she'll need at least a minor model update minus one horn. That's why I think she'll change to a zariel tiefling to better suit a paladin or barbarian with free smite spells once per long rest. As for Paladin she could very well swear an oath to Tempus (Lord of Battles) as she is a battle hardened warrior or an oath to Tyr (Justice) to get back at those that betrayed her. If they go even further they could make her swear an oath to Myrkul just for the bloody warpath she is making her way down the streets of Baldur's Gate. However, the previous two options are more likely as Larian said that the remaining companions would be more on the good side of alignments. I hope she gets released soon but I'm concerned that they still haven't released bug fixes from patch 4 yet so patch 5 may end up being pretty uneventful. Although with them taking a while to release another big patch makes me think that patch 5 may have more hefty content than just bug fixes.

Well she could be an Oathbreaker archetype since she deserted the Blood War after she was drafted. And this would make her good alignment make sense. And depending on our interactions we take with her she gains a new oath. Could wind up taking an Avenger or Redemption oath. That's my guess anyway. PS - You do address this but as a DM we are the final say on what we permit. In this case Larian is the DM and is permitting this archetype temporarily. Also alignments don't dictate who can become a paladin in 5e. You are just as likely to see an evil paladin as a good one now. Frankly I think it's an interesting idea to potentially give us the freedom to influence this oathbreaker.

This is a really interesting idea and well made video. Personally I think she'll be an oath of vengeance paladin. The dialogue you referenced does make her sound angry and strong but barbarians aren't the only ones known for being angry and strong. A paladin of vengeance still fits that description pretty well. Also, paladin's don't swear their oath until level 3, so maybe she was a paladin of Zariel in hell, but lost her power when she left, and at level 3 will swear an oath of vengeance against Zariel. New oath would probably need a new god so maybe she doesn't have any voice lines about her god because 1: it's still a new change to her, or 2: Larian hadn't decided what god she worshipped when those lines were recorded and the lines where she talks about her god haven't been added yet. As for the bracers being attached to her model, I mean so is her extra horn and we're expecting them to remove that so there's no reason they can't remove the other as well.

I totally agree that Paladin is more likely, but I think they're going to make you choose your god during character creation. When a Paladin speaks to Gale they can tell him that their god gives them healing magic, meaning a level 1 Paladin needs to already have sworn themselves to a god. They might change that moving forward but if they're keeping Paladin and Cleric responses linked I doubt they will. It still strikes me as odd that a Paladin wouldn't have any references to their god or their divine power, with Karlach attributing her power to Zariel and then saying that after leaving Avernus she's back to using "muscle and steel," which I feel like fits a Fighter or Barbarian better than a Paladin (who I assume would be open about the divine power they're using to fight).

Interesting! I couldn't find any references to Paladins of Zariel alongside the other tags and most characters when talking to a Paladin mention the Paladin's deity. I know she was an angel before, but would Zariel double as a deity at this point? Could she even have Paladins of her own without ascending? The plot thickens...

@@Chubblot She's a ruler of a circle of hell lore wise so I think being able to have paladins is not that much of a stretch. It not being in the tags doesn't support my theory but might be explained by that Karlach is unique in this regard so any trait interaction could be instead showed into "Karlach". Similary to how Astarion is a vampire but the game has no "vampire" tag.

A barbarian paladin oath-breaker. Now that’s a class to give to someone. Can’t case spells in rage but you can cast buffs and longer duration spells before going into rage to really stack some exstra zing into your stacking. This would also alow her to wear heavier armor then a standard barbarian. So something like a juggernaut who can use magic. Plus she’s an oath-breaker with fire in her vains and that means her spells might not be the standard fair. so she might be able to cast things a paladin would normally not be able to cast. even thou her paladin skills are most likely weakened her pyromantics are most likely naturally strong.

Even though it says she’s a “Asmodeus Tiefiling” , but she seems to lean more as a Zariel Tiefiling. Because the way she acts has strong ties to having the bloodline of Zariel, also having the martial strength and ability to burn their foes. Idk that’s my theory, might seem a little crumbly.

Very possible Deadgun! I has assumed she'd stay an Asmodeus Tiefling because unlike Barbarian/Paladin the Tiefling subraces are currently in-game and someone went out of their way to make sure she had that subrace tag when it would've been just as easy to make her a Zariel Tiefling. But it's all up in the air at the moment!

I hope she's a Paladin, but a Barbarian works just as well. I'm biased as a huge fan of the Paladin class.

Oh btw, in Forgotten Realms(the dnd setting of Baldur's Gate, if I'm correct), Paladins MUST have a deity. Some other dnd settings don't require Paladins to have deities, but Forgotten Realms do

Is it possible that Karlach was part of Zariel’s original celestial host that attacked Avernus, and then got “transformed” into her current form after Zariel’s “arrangement” with the Big Boss? I know it is a long shot but it would be a fun story arc for her.
