Last year I was visitng Greece for the first time and also heard the language for the first time. I fell in love. I'm trying to learn it however I'm not made for the traditional way (classic teacher approach). For me watching your video and starting bit by bit recognizing words makes me feel happy and gives me way more motivation than learning the numbers because that's how you "have" to learn. I guess throwing myself into the ice water seems the best approach to me. Efcharisto for the videos!

Ευχαριστώ πολύ, Γιούλη… Ive been learning Greek now for 4.5 years and I have a one hour lesson a week with my Greek tutor. I didn’t start learning until I was 55 and I’m a lot slower now at learning things than I was 45 years ago at school! My main issue seems to be that I need to stop translating everything in my head when listening to conversations from the CD with the book I’m currently working through (Ελληνικά Α). As soon as I hear the first line then try and translate it in my head, I’ve missed what the next two lines were and I find it very frustrating. I also agree completely with measuring my progress, after all this time learning, I still feel as though I’m still at day one and I know nothing and I’m very critical of myself. I find your video’s very very useful and they make a very welcome change to learn from them rather than just having my head stuck in an exercise book all the time…

Hi Lee, listening is quite challenging especially in the beginning. I remember when I was learning Russian, I couldn't understand how many words were in a sentence. I was feeling like all the words were combined. Songs helped me a lot with this issue. Plus, I learned tones of vocabulary :)

Lee the only solution to your problem is find the nearest Greek Association, gain membership, and start discussing politics with same age citizens 😅😅😅😅 Remember we learned our maternal language by imitating the sounds of our Mothers. Time to change and start following the sounds of our partners in a Greek Club. 😊

Ευχαριστώ, Γιούλη! Your lessons are very useful and make learning Greek fun! What I find difficult is to use words that have the same root but different prefix. The words like: καταλαβαίνω, προλαβαίνω, παραλαμβάνω... or αποδέχομαι, παραδέχομαι, κατάδέχομαι... There are many words like that (not only verbs) and I wonder if you could make a video about various words that come from the same root. Or, may be, you could guide us to a table that would include all the words with similar roots. I often mistakenly use a wrong word because I misuse the prefix. Thank you again for your excellent work!
@iggo45 Жыл бұрын
Valuable question. The simple answer is to define the meaning of each prefix and the meaning it gives afterwards to the adhesive word. A rough example: Κατα: under Προ: before Παρα: in the same parallel time Examples: Κατα λαβαινω: under take or under stand Προ λαβαινω : before take (I was before scheduled time of bus departures) Παρά λαβαινω: The courier handled me the delivered box. We both raised our hands at the same time. It's very easy if you understand the meaning of the prefix. Try to give me the correct answer of what Υποσαχάρια Αφρική means.

First of all, I want to express my gratitude for the great work that you do and help me learn Greek, thank you very much. Let me express my wishes, which will greatly facilitate language study. The first is the presence of text on the screen in two languages at once, Greek and English. This makes it possible to occasionally and at the same time read in Greek and, if necessary if it is not clear to look at the meaning of what was said. Now the texts are available, but not simultaneously, and this significantly complicates the process for the student. Secondly, I would like to ask you to pause on significant words in a sentence, thereby focusing the attention of listeners on them. It seems to me that focusing on individual words or phrases significantly helps the perception of the language.
@Linguatree Жыл бұрын
I very much appreciate your words and thank you for your suggestions :)
@budgetmoss9270 Жыл бұрын
Ah that's interesting because I prefer the captions to be separate so I am not tempted to cheat and read the English before having a good go at the Greek. I find it most useful to listen without captions, then again with Greek captions, and finally with English, then go back to no captions and see if I can follow it all now. A long process but gets the best results for me. I guess everyone has a different way of learning. Focussing on particular difficult words I think I would find useful as well. I love how the words are clear and distinct with a slow pace to give us the best chance to follow it, this is different from most other Greek language videos on KZbin and it helps a lot with learning.
@manorueda1432 Жыл бұрын
Συμφωνώ... όταν ξεκινάς με μια γλώσσα, η γραμματική μοιάζει ακριβώς αυτό, ένα σύνολο κανόνων, αλλά σιγά σιγά είναι πιο φυσικό να τη μάθεις χωρίς να το σκέφτεσαι, απλά να συνηθίζεις τον σωστό τρόπο να λες τις προτάσεις.

My main obstacle is just laziness. And with Greek, unlike with the other 5 or 6 languages I have learned and speak at B2+ level, the words just don't stick. So on the one hand they require much more effort to learn in the first place, and then I forget them much, much quicker than words in other languages. Your lessons are fantastic though, and i couldn't love them more!

@@Wandering.Homebody Well, it's so rewarding for me to get this feedback, especially when it comes from fellow teachers! So thank you so very much! I speak only English and Italian fluently, but I also studied Russian and German in the past. One more critical question. How do you learn vocabulary?
@Wandering.Homebody Жыл бұрын
@@Linguatree I did some summer courses at Athens uni, up to B1, and just try to retain the new words when they get introduced, and duolingo, and languagetransfer org. I guess I don't revise vocabulary,as such. Do you actually sit down and revise vocabulary? As like, a specific task? I just try to get to A2/B1 as fast as I can, and then I start reading books and watch shows on Netflix in that language, and pick up the words like that. Initially, this is unbelievably painful and boring, but it gets entertaining soon enough. If ever you want to swap lessons with me German-Greek, I d be thrilled! Now, or at whatever point in the future :). Just say the word, and i ll drop you an email :)
@Linguatree Жыл бұрын
@@Wandering.Homebody I do the same. I enjoy podcasts a lot, and I take notes, or in general, I write down my thoughts about the topic. That's how I acquire new words and songs (of course). I barely watch movies lately. Oh, thanks for suggesting this language swap :) If I start learning German again, I will contact you :)

@Linguatree Жыл бұрын
Η ορθογραφία ήταν και για μένα κάτι δύσκολο όταν ήμουν μικρή, αλλά υπάρχουν μοτίβα που επαναλαμβάνονται. Τώρα και για τα ρήματα στον αόριστο υπάρχουν μοτίβα αλλά κάποια είναι και ανώμαλα που πρέπει απλά να τα χρησιμοποιήσεις αρκετές φορές, σε διαφορετικά πλαίσια (contexts) και προτάσεις. Το ότι γράφεις ημερολόγιο έχει πολύ μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Γράφεις για την καθημερινότητά σου ή σημειώνεις την πρόοδο που κάνεις;

@@Linguatree Ευχαριστώ για την απάντηση. Γράφω κυρίως για την καθημερινότητά μου, επειδή έτσι μαθαίνω τις λέξεις που μου λείπουν. Οι σημαντικότερες λέξεις δεν είναι απαραίτητα οι ίδιες για όλους, και ένα ημερολόγιο μου φαίνεται μια καταπληκτική μέθοδος για να μάθουμε ποιες είναι αυτές για μας.
