Μπράβο για άλλο ένα καταπληκτικό και ψαγμένο (κυριολεκτικά) επεισόδιο. Αναδημοσιεύω αμέσως! 5 ακόμα "μπουκίτσες πληροφορίας" (ωραία μετάφραση!) : 1. Η Αθήνα ήταν γεμάτη ποτάμια, από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι τα μέσα του 20ου αιώνα. Δηλαδή από κάτω από την Ακρόπολη, στο Μοναστηράκι, το Σύνταγμα, την πλατεία Αττικής, τους Αμπελόκηπους, τη Μεσογείων όοολοι αυτοί οι δρόμοι είχαν ποτάμια! Τα οποία μπαζώθηκαν (covered with concrete) και δεν τα βλέπουμε πια, παρά μόνο στις πλημμύρες (floods)... 2. Η πρώτη πρωτεύουσα της Ελλάδας ορίστηκε (was set to be) το Ναύπλιο, το 1826. Αλλά έγινε τελικά η Αίγινα. Και μετά πάλι το Ναύπλιο. Μέχρι το 1834 που έγινε τελικά η Αθήνα. 3. Η Ελλάδα έχει πάρει την πρωτιά (came first) πολλές φορές στην κατανάλωση τυριού. Ο κάθε ένας από εμάς, τρώει πάνω από 30 κιλά τυρί τον χρόνο. 4. Η αρχαιότερη ελιά στον κόσμο που παράγει ΑΚΟΜΑ ελιές, βρίσκεται στην Κρήτη. Θεωρείται 3.000-5.000 ετών. (το αγαπημένο μου "φακτ"!) 5. Το Άγιο Όρος έχει μπει στο Ρεκόρ Γκίνες (Guinness World Records) για τον λόγο που ανέφερες στο βίντεο (αυτό το φακτ το έμαθα τώρα, ψάχνοντας περισσότερα για το Όρος.) Χαιρετισμούς στη Μαριλένα :-)

@@21LeonidasZ well, it's a very long road, we have both actual and former greek communities in Romania, we also have long forgotten ties from the pelasgian era which were actually tracians who traveled to Greece before the actual greeks came, it's a very entangled history.

You don’t need to study both languages to expect that. Just study history. Latin and Greek was the official languages together in Eastern Roman Empire for centuries, long before Slavs come in Balkan peninsula. This coexistence was peaceful and if someone wanted to be considered educated had to speak fluently both of them. Also civilization and religion was and is common. Cuisine and even in some extend music having a lot of similarities. Modern Greeks love traditional Romanian music not as something “exotic” as other Europeans do but as something that sound’s as “ours”. Latin language (the grandfather of Romanian) itself is not completely foreign to ancient Greek. Even Greek War of Independence started in Romanian and not in Greek soil... So it’s not surprising at all to find similarities. Surprising was the violent cutting of centuries long cultural ties because of political reasons after WWII.-

It's a matter of context. Depending on the context, the word "fact" can be more accurately translated to "δεδομένο" (literally "given"). Fact does not necessarily mean a "tidbit", but something that is known to be true. It's difficult to find an equivalent of a word that changes meanings. For example, in the sentence "It's sometimes hard to separate fact from fiction", the word "fact" translates to "πραγματικότητα" (reality). The title of the video could have been "10 surprising things you may not know about Greece" and it would still have the same meaning (things -> πράγματα, has the same root with the greek word for reality).

Fun fact! H λέξη fact η λέξη γεγονός στην ουσία έρχονται από την ίδια σημασία (όχι ρίζα). Το fact έρχεται από το λατινικό facio, το οποίο σημαίνει κάνω, άρα στην ουσία είναι και το fact κάτι που έγινε - factum, όπως και το γεγονός!

Interesting video once again. I think, regarding the Isosceles triangle, it would not surprise me if this was done purposely. The ancient peoples of Europe were very good with mathematics. The Celtic Britons used the golden ratio to draw their art, which is mind blowing if you think about it.. and the ancient Greeks were the forefathers of mathematics as we know it today.. so it would not surprise me at all. Very interesting facts! As for the matter of Mount Athos, it depends on how you see it. Based on the teachings of the Orthodox Church, the peninsula is devoted to Virgin Mary, as she asked via a vision fron Saint Athanasios. She wanted the place to be only for her. So, you have an entire peace of land devoted to a woman. A woman is so great and important that she has an entire peninsula devoted to her. A think no one has received such an honor from orthodoxy, not even male Saints. Keep up the good work!

@@EasyGreekVideos There sre places that men are not allowed, such as women monasteries. Also, no one can open a business at Mount Athos, not even a man. There are restrictions even for men in Agio Oros: they can go only as visitors and monks. I think it's more of a religious matter and a matter of respect than it is a matter of woman rights. I don't think our rights are trampled in any way by this. Of course, people have different opinions.

I mean, differences between women's and men's rights have good explanations that make sense in every religion, at least within their respective cultures and contexts. I guess the question is whether people should look at religions through this objective perspective or not.

I think that since there are sort of "double standards" and since the aim of fobidding women to go to Mount Athos isn't to degrade them, but to praise a specific woman, there is no women rights violation (in my opinion). As we both said, people should examine both viewpoints.

From an orthodox standpoint: to Virgin Mary, Christ, God we are all equal. I don’t think Virgin Mary would ever bother to restrict other women from entering a holy place due to shallow human feelings we attribute to her such as jealously. Jealousy and other shallow feelings belong exclusively to us humans. This decision if forbidding women to enter a holy place is however reminiscent of the way ancient greeks expressed their worship to their gods. And it’s worth to remember that this decision was a decision made by humans and expresses the opinion of a group of people who had the power to enforce it.

Καλημέρα, συγχαρητήρια για το κανάλι! Κάνετε φανταστική δουλειά, ειδικά για όσους ξένους θέλουν να μάθουν ελληνικά, και πιο συγκεκριμένα την καθομιλουμένη. Νομίζω όμως πως η μετάφραση της αγγλικής λέξης "fact" ως "μπουκίτσα πληροφορίας" είναι ατυχής. Εννοώ πως αν κάποιος πει για παράδειγμα, έστω και με τέλεια προφορά: "Διάβασα για την συγκεκριμένη 'μπουκίτσα πληροφορίας' μόλις πριν 2 μέρες" ("I read about this 'morsel of information' just 2 days ago"), ναι μεν θα καταλάβουμε τι εννοεί, αλλά θα καταλάβουμε επίσης πως δεν είναι ημεδαπός. Τουλάχιστον στα δικά μου αυτιά ακούγεται το ίδιο λάθος όπως και στην παραπάνω ακριβή μετάφρασή του στα αγγλικά. Όπως αναφέρθηκε ήδη κι από άλλους, νομίζω πως η λέξη "γεγονός" είναι η πλέον ενδεδειγμένη ως αντίστοιχη της αγγλικής "fact": "Διάβασα για το συγκεκριμένο γεγονός μόλις πριν 2 μέρες" ("I read about this fact just 2 days ago"). Ανάλογα το περιεχόμενο, μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί και η λέξη "δεδομένο" ("given") όπως επίσης έχει ήδη ειπωθεί κι από άλλους, αλλά νομίζω πως η λέξη "γεγονός" χρησιμοποιείται συχνότερα και καλύπτει περισσότερες περιπτώσεις. Για παράδειγμα: "Διάβασα για το συγκεκριμένο δεδομένο μόλις πριν 2 μέρες" δεν ακούγεται πολύ φυσικό (natural). Ίσως έχει κάποιο περιορισμένο πεδίο χρήσης, π.χ. σε ένα εργαστήριο, αλλά νομίζω πως ακόμα και εκεί πιθανότητα θα χρησιμοποιούσαμε άλλη λέξη, όπως για παράδειγμα "στοιχείο", ή το ακριβές αντικείμενο/πρόσωπο/πράξη για το οποίο διαβάσαμε, ή θα το παραλείπαμε τελείως: "Διάβασα για το συγκεκριμένο μόλις πριν 2 μέρες". Από την άλλη μεριά, για παράδειγμα η φράση: "Είναι δεδομένο πως η γη είναι στρογγυλή" ("It is a given that the Earth is round") ακούγεται εξίσου "φυσικά" με τη φράση: "Είναι γεγονός πως η γη είναι στρογγυλή" ("It is a fact that the Earth is round"). Εν κατακλείδι, νομίζω πως οι ξένοι φίλοι μας θα είναι πολύ πιο κατανοητοί αν χρησιμοποιούν τη λέξη "γεγονός" ως αντίστοιχη της "fact", και τη λέξη "δεδομένο" ως αντίστοιχη της "given". Η λέξη "μπουκίτσα" ("morsel") παραπέμπει κυρίως σε φαγητό και προφανώς στο βίντεο χρησιμοποιείται μεταφορικά ως "μικρό κομμάτι (πληροφορίας)" ("little piece (of information)"), αλλά πραγματικά πιστεύω πως δεν πρέπει να την συνδέσουν με τις λέξεις "fact" και "given". Δημήτρη, έχεις διδαχθεί ελληνικά εκτός Ελλάδας; Τα ελληνικά σου είναι προφανώς άπταιστα, αλλά διακρίνω μια πιο κελαρυστή ροή στην προφορά σου συγκριτικά με τους ηπεδαπούς.

Όχι, γεννήθηκα και μεγάλωσα στην Ελλάδα, απλά μεγάλο μέρος της οικογένειας μου είναι ή Έλληνες που έμεναν έξω πολλά χρόνια ή ξένοι που ήρθαν στην Ελλάδα κάποια στιγμή, όπως ο πατέρας μου. Σχετικά με το fact: σωστά όσα γράφεις. Παρ' όλ' αυτά, επειδή η λέξη "fact" όπως χρησιμοποιείται στον τίτλο του βίντεο συγκεκριμένα δεν έχει ακριβή μετάφραση, προτίμησα την ελεύθερη και περιφραστική μετάφραση. Το 'morsels of information' και οι "μπουκίτσες πληροφορίας" ακούγονται αφύσικες, αλλά εξηγούν με ακρίβεια και χιούμορ το τι σημαίνει στ' αλήθεια η λέξη 'fact' σε αυτή την περίπτωση μ' έναν τρόπο που οι λέξεις »δεδομένο» ή «γεγονός» (η οποία είναι στ' αλήθεια συνώνυμο της λέξης «συμβάν») δεν καλύπτουν. Νομίζω ότι είναι κατανοητό στους θεατές ότι πρόκειται για μια δική μου επινόηση και όχι για κάτι που χρησιμοποιείται στη γλώσσα εν γένει. Σ' ευχαριστώ για το σχόλιο, Harry!

Ναι, καταλαβαίνω απόλυτα πως και γιατί χρησιμοποίησες μεταφορικά την "μπουκίτσα" στο βίντεο, όπως πιστεύω το καταλαβαίνουν αβίαστα και οι περισσότεροι Έλληνες με επαρκή γνώση αγγλικών. Απλά θεώρησα καλό για τους ξένους να διευκρινίσω πως είναι κάτι που δεν το χρησιμοποιούμε στην πράξη. Ίσως "things" αντί για "facts" στον τίτλο να ήταν λίγο πιο ακριβές, αλλά και πάλι το "things" αφαιρεί από την βαρύτητα που δίνει το "facts" στην εξακριβωμένη φύση των πληροφοριών που ακολουθούν. Δεν βοηθάει και το γεγονός πως και η ίδια η λέξη "fact" μπορεί να σημαίνει ελαφρώς διαφορετικά πράγματα στα αγγλικά, ανάλογα τα συμφραζόμενα. Οπότε ναι καταλαβαίνω απόλυτα :) Σχετικά με την κελαρυστή ροή, όντως το διακρίνω. Ελαφρώς βέβαια, αλλά ναι μου κάνει λιγάκι σαν μικρή ιταλική πινελιά των ελληνικών σου, που φυσικά είναι άπταιστα. "Gegonos" and "fact" have exactly the same meaning. Something that has been done, finished, completed. Zero difference. Gegonos is the participle (metohi) of the verb gignomai in the 'parakeimenos' tense. Fact is the same in Latin Mpoukitsa pliroforias? Pou xanakouses afti tin ekfrasi?

Good video. However the concept of how the buildings and statues were painted is not entirely accurate. Yes they were painted to a certain degree. For the buildings not everything was painted but selective parts such as pediments, they were. As far as statues: There is no evidence that they were painted with such strong colors. Yes we have found pigments (scientific fact) but the idea they were painted like totems with very bright colors is highly interpretive and misleading. I am a mathematician so I think logically and will pose the following: What clear evidence we have from the statues especially those from the classical period? They were extremely realistic. So why wouldn't the coloring abide to that of realistic coloring as well? Given what we have from the physical forms preserved today, we can only stipulate the coloring was natural in all spectrums so as to accentuate the realistic form of the statues as well.
