What do you think about Lorelai Gilmore? Is she a good mom, overhyped, still love her? Let me know!
I did my best to be neutral and analyzer her character, although, to me, she is one of my favorites of all time!

I think Lorelai’s biggest misstep as a mother is actually being too enthusiastic about Rory’s abilities, Rory never seems prepared to do hard things the way say Paris, Lane, and even Logan are.

Good point. Lorelai could have totally been more balanced with that. It does kinda feel like she overcompensated for where Christopher was lacking in that department.

One of my favorite moments between Emily and Lorelai is when they are looking at the house Richard and Emily want to buy for her and Luke when they get married. When Lorelai tells Emily that she doesn't think she and Luke are going to happen, and Emily walks up to Lorelai and puts her hand on her shoulder with a very concerned look on her face. That always makes me tear up.

I love that Emily and Richard were gonna buy them a house and then they gave Lorelai and Christopher an ugly painting. I personally think that they knew the two wouldn't last. I hate it, but I'm also glad that the new writers made them get married so there's no longer the idea that they would be good together. I have to admit I don't like Lorelai in her friendships, especially with Sookie! She is so dismissive of Sookie's needs and interests. Sookie is always doing things for Lorelai and praising her, and Lorelai rarely even thanks her. She wakes Sookie up in the middle of the night, invites herself over for a sleepover, and then gets annoyed when Sookie wants to make the best of it by turning it into a slumber party. Sookie gets amazing seats to the Bangles concert and Lorelai unilaterally decides that she and Sookie are giving up their seats for the girls. She's rude, condescending, and makes fat jokes! She only ever apologized to Sookie sincerely ONE TIME (and I bet you can't think of it!)
@AVintageJoy
@AVintageJoy 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the sookie parts for sure! I think showing that Lorelai was there for sookie more would have been nice to see on film. It would show more of why they're best friends. We see her babysit and when she does say that sookie has never dated so why should she give advice she does apologize, not sure if that's the part you are referencing or not, but she has some pretty hurtful things she says towards sookie sometimes and I really don't like that! I had like an extra five minutes talking about sookie and lorelai, but I cut it to not make the video like a half hour long, and now I wish I would have kept it in!

She has flaws (um, all humans do!) but I think for the most part, she's a young mom trying her best to make a great life for herself and Rory. I came late to the Gilmore’s but have watched it several times. The writing is complex and layered. It’s also funny and poignant. And, this show would be nothing without it’s conflicted relationships. The characters had no choice in their actions. That’s is all the writers. I also think one point that is always overlooked is the generational differences. Emily and Richard are born at the end of WWII and brought up with money in a conservative world. Lorelei is born in the late 60’s when the world’s women are fighting for equality, there are civil rights issues, Vietnam, etc. Of course, she rebelled. They don’t specifically address these issues in the show but it’s at the heart of their differences. Also, the writers have the same mother-daughter issues in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Just a decade earlier. I think one of the crucial points is that Lorelei is an emotionally stunted 16 year old. That’s why the show opens with Rory at the age her mother was when she was born. Anyway, the more I watched, the more I enjoyed the complexities.

When Lorelai said “where else did WE applied?” the moment she found out that Rory applied to not only harvard but Yale and Princeton too, that line felt wrong, if she were really supporting Rory in her way to an Ivy League she wouldn’t have reacted that way, it was supposed to be Rory’s choice right? You just gotta love Lorelai. As for the relationship side of her, I definitely agree she self-sabotages, and I think it probably stems from that side of her having a stunted development. Like, she shut down that side of herself at 16 when she got pregnant and had to figure out how to be a mother. I know she said in the show that she had dated, but I think she probably did so more on the shallow end, like enjoying dressing up and go out with someone or scratching the occasional itch, but because she was so focused on sheltering Rory from that, she never dived into any deeper relationship than that and thereby was "behind" in terms of learning how to function in a relationship. I may be self-inserting a little, because I find myself to have that problem as well (for different reasons than her - I have no kids, lol), like I've got the friendship side of me down, but I still have no clue how to function in any romantic connection to another person. If we look at Lorelai's relationships, she and Christopher had a way of reverting each other back into 16 year olds whenever their paths crossed, they just didn't know how to relate to each other as adults. With Max, I think the self-sabotage there was inevitable. He was the first proper adult relationships she had, as in the first relationship that she actually had around Rory, and I think she followed Max's lead in terms of where it should lead rather than figuring out for herself where she wanted it to go. As much as I love Max, I do think he asked for too much too soon with his proposal, it was more passion-driven than actually thought out - which makes sense as passion was the trait he and Lorelai had the most in common. Lorelai definitely did him dirty by running away, and it was blatant how not ready she was for such a serious commitment as marriage. Skipping over the whole Digger-debacle (dating to get back at her parents... yeah, enough said), we get to Luke and yeah, you're spot on about the communication issues. And I think once again Lorelai's side of it stemmed from immaturity. If she hadn't hid or tried to hide her interactions with Chris from Luke (as her way to "fix" problems before they happened, as you put it), it wouldn't have blown up as much as it did, and when it did, she learned the wrong lesson from it and continued in the same pattern. Then when it was Luke who failed to communicate about April (following a similar pattern to hers, attempting to not rock the boat and thus creating a bigger issue down the line), rather than voicing her actual feelings about it, Lorelai supressed them, choosing to wait in silence for Luke to notice what was going on with her. I'm still in complete denial about Lorelai's ultimatum and subsequent bad choices (the last disc of my season 6 box set is taped up never to be watched again, and I do not own season 7), and I have never watched the "Paris" episode (thankfully the promo for it was warning enough to stay away) and honestly never will. I do wish we could have seen them better at communicating in the revival, but at least by the end of it they learned to be more vocal about what they wanted, which gives me hope. Avoiding to rock the boat to keep things going, just isn't a good solution overall, and it did make it so they missed out on certain things they would have liked to share (like say having kids together while they still could).
@AVintageJoy
@AVintageJoy 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with so so much of this! You have seen season 7 though right?! Digger is a whole nother animal and her reasoning for dating him is so bad! She for sure reverts to being 16 with Chris, and I also agree that I wish I could have seen her and Luke grow more between season 7 and the revival when it comes to communication specifically! I have no inside knowledge, but I do think if we had walked into the revival and they would have introduced us to a 7 year old kid of theirs, people would have freaked out!
@mkitten13
@mkitten13 2 жыл бұрын
@@AVintageJoy I've watched most of the episodes, but skipped the Lorelai/Chris stuff as much as possible. It just didn't feel like the show anymore, the main pillars of what made Gilmore Girls great (the mother/daughter relationship, the core friendships of Lorelai/Sookie and Rory/Lane, the overall Gilmore family dynamic, and the town itself) seemed to just take a major backseat. Like, there were some stuff, but not the great focus we had before ASP left (the new showrunner just didn't seem to understand what made the show the show IMO). Instead the season was divided into three more isolated parts, with Luke's being the more watchable of the three (and also the one primarily featuring the townies), like if I could have edited versions of the episodes that featured just his stuff, I'd happily get them (and my favourite character is Lorelai...) I think in terms of the revival, I think they would not be able to do right by us no matter what. Because yes, as viewers we prefer to watch the big events, but at the same time coming in and seeing this relationship all these years later and have so little develop within those years, that too felt like a letdown (I enjoy the revival a lot, and think that it did a lot of good - though honestly the best storyline there was given to Emily, lol). It just felt like they had been walking on eggshells around each other for all these years instead of actually finally learning from their past mistakes and communicating. So on one hand, I do love that we did get to see their wedding finally, part of me also just wish we could have learned they married x amount of time into the relationship and actually developed as a couple.

I said it on the Rory video, I'm going to say it on this one: Lorelai is co-dependent on her daughter. And vice-versa. I also think, though I'm not a psychiatrist, Lorelai Gilmore has Borderline Personality Disorder. That's my opinion, from what BPD is. I could be wrong, but just voicing it. I love Lorelai Gilmore, but i have issues with her relationships as well: ergo, and this is mainly about Christopher. You should do one on Christopher. Christopher, why do we hate him. I firmly believe at the end of everything, he's probably like Jess and has Matured. And no one wants to give him the benefit of the doubt and when the world sucks, aka Sherry getting pregnant, the world sucks. And Lorelai, I know is scared for Rory to have a relationship with her dad, he's still her dad. And she deserves to know and understand his side. Lorelai, never pushes that on her daughter but Rory has to deal with her mom's fall out because of it. Lorelai, in turn does not say for her to not have a relationship, with him but because Rory, does take her cue from her mom... and she does, doesn't vocalize to her mom whenever Christopher contacts her via email. If you think about it, Lorelai has strung Christopher along. I know he's not the most initiative with Rory, but I will say, like Rory, Christopher does take his cue from Lorelai. Lorelai just wants him around whenever she needs him. He's her cushion. However, when Chris needs Lorelai... I bet anything he's always needed her... and never had the guts to do anything about it. Because he doesn't want to rock her freaking life. Except when he does come around the world does its job. Except here's the thing, if you're not willing to work through the world with that person, then you got nothing. Chris doing the right thing is not what's needed nor wanted. However, he has matured away from Lorelai, which is a good thing. And became very independent and stable. The problem is... Lorelai had such an influence over Rory to deny those aspect and look at his weakness instead of his maturity. I'm going to say this once again, he might not have always been there and he wasn't. And even though there have been some cases where he tries, it's like the Gilmore Girls don't care where he is at all. Not as a man or a father.( Once, when his father died, did they ever show up in his life, his life. Relationships are a two way street.) It just seems to spell out, that they don't want to know him. And he's left hanging there, until one of them is reminded he even exists at all. And here's what's sad: He wants to know them you can see that, and feel it. But they put up there walls. And when life comes, they would rather Christopher wasn't there, unless Lorelai had a fight with Luke. ("That's happened twice by the way." Lorelai turning to Christopher, after a flare up with Luke.) However, she made her choice, and to be honest. The best times in her life is never with Christopher, only in the spiral moments do we see her clinging to him, in other words she does string him along. If she doesn't want to be with him, long terms, she needs to tell him and not do that. ( I am not talking about season 7 as a whole. Just the ending of season 6,) but it is true, it's there. I think, Christopher knows that, and that is the reason he's never there. Which is sad, because out of her relationships he's the one her knows her well. The best things about her, the dynamics between her and her parents, and what she knows about him and his parents. They know each other very well. I do like her relationship with him. They've both grown over the years. He's never disrespected her. However, she uses him only when its convenient for her. He's a consolation prize. He doesn't want to be that. He shouldn't be. And he's a great guy, in the end. Everyone hates him, just because Rory made her decision to not be a part of his life. He wants to be a part of her life. And you know that. There's a season five episode that still haunts me about Rory and her relationship with Chris. She asks him to not be anywhere near Lorelai. And he respects that, until Lorelai calls him. He accepts to see her, and that feeling between them at the table, in the Dragonfly Inn, it has stayed with me. Even the end of that episode still stays with me. He calls up Lorelai to talk to her and leaves a message. Lorelai, doesn't care. She walks upstairs. And away from it. Away from him. Everyone can say what they want, about Christopher. But can we also see how they blatantly treat him, it may be their show and not his. After everything is said and done, relationships: Lorelai and Max. Lorelai and Christopher. Lorelai and Jason. Lorelai and Luke. oh and Lorelai and Alex. it's all a two way street. They don't make an effort on their part to have a relationship with him, unless the writers want him to show up.

I am planning on doing two videos, as of now, on the Gilmore Guys. One about Lorelai's boyfriends and one about Rory's boyfriends. I agree that Lorelai saw Christopher as a second choice and never her first choice. One of the heartbreaking moments in the show, for me, is when Lorelai says "You're the one I want to want." I think that sums up their relationship totally, and does break my heart for Christopher. I wish we had more to go off of when Lorelai left the Gilmore's and went to the Independence Inn. Did she tell Christophers? Did he try to find her? I don't remember a part of the show that answers those questions. We know Rory was at least one before Lorelai left, so was Christopher in her life then? Did he try to be and wasn't allowed? Did he try to take any extra steps to say "no this is my daughter I want to be with her"? I don't know. The small glimpse we see of him in the reboot he seems to have his life together, but I wish we had seen Gigi too and had seem more about how that relationship had grown or not grown. I think that would give us more insight on if it's a Christopher thing or a Lorelai thing with him not being as involved in Rory's life.

@@AVintageJoy From what I understand, the actor that portrayed Christopher, had been in another tv series in season four of Gilmore Girl's aired. (I know this response comes late. And I might be slightly biased. I don't know.) However, the statement when Lorelai says it, "You're the one I want to want." Does fit their relationship, I do agree. I do not however agree with the timing. Or perhaps what I should say is that I do not like Season 7. Having them get married the way they did was hurtful to everyone involved, not to mention seemed uncharacteristic or very real to me and so when she says that - even though I agree with you - it comes at an awfully big price that ultimately ruins their relationship. It just seems that when she finally does tell him that, it's too little too late, with them being married. Which is the writer's fault. (I will not apologize for hating on season 7, because of how things happened. ) And even though, this is about Lorelai, I got a put in here, Rory graduating at the end of seaon seven. No. She needed another year in order to graduate. No matter how much of a good student she really is, that was the most unrealistic thing to exist in that show.

@@cat2helen Totally agreed on both fronts! I think the timing of being married and then having Lorelai say that was so so hurtful, even for the viewer for sure! Also agreed, Rory would have had to have a full class load in the summer and then extra classes her senior year to make that work, and we already learned from freshman Rory that a 5 class schedule doesn't work for her. Honestly me either! 5 classes would have been way too much for me in collect to try to balance with friends and work! I totally agree with you for sure!

Rory's birthday is on October 8th 1984. Lorelai's birthday is, as I remember from the show, either in May or June 1968, and according to "the internet" in April 1968. Lorelai was clearly only 15 when she got pregnant. I find it really peculiar how everybody who talks about this show claims that Lorelai got pregnant at age 16. Even the show features only one moment when Lorelai mentions being "about 16" (not her exact words) when she got pregnant. And it's even possible that in that moment, she, too, simply confirms the notion that she got pregnant at age 16. Which is simply false. She might have found out for sure that she was pregnant after her 16th birthday if she found out pretty late, but her pregnancy started before that.

I just stopped rewatching GG because I was just too annoyed with Lorelai and her double standards, already in Season 2. I remembered that she had annoyed me greatly at some point when watching for the first time, but oh my… She keeps telling Rory about her wild adventures sneaking out, the boys, the alcohol and got pregnant with a boy at 15, but Rory at 16 would apparently never drink and is shamed when hanging out with Jess and Rory should do everything with her and never want to be alone. Rory is shamed when asking about the Luke conflict and her mum keeps on talking with her boyfriend Dean, interfering, instead of letting Rory figure out things for herself, telling her to communicate about her issues… She controls so many aspects of Rory‘s life and when Rory confronts her she just says I‘m your mother, I‘m allowed to. And don‘t even get me started on the whole Harvard thing, that she has apparantly wanted to go there since she was a toddler - I mean… And always getting so angry at her parents wanting to help her like in the case of the termites in the house. Completely embarrassing Emily in front of her acquaintance and not even expressing her gratitude for having a mother who covered her - not everyone has that luxury. Additionally, further shaming Rory for spilling, like she can‘t share details of HER life with her grandparents. Lorelai could have also taken Luke up on his offer, but was rather ungrateful to her mother.

I am confused why people are so weirdly judging when it comes to the GG characters as if the show was ever truly organic... Almost any time we saw a character change it was due to cast changes not writers intent. Almost all male cast left the show at different points leading to story lines that were never! supposed to happen. "Tristan" was supposed to stay on longer and have a story line a la Logan. Jess wasn't supposed to happen as he did. Logan was never planned as originally the show wouldn't even run that many years into the story line. Jess ran from Stars Hollow because he left the show. Why did Lane end up w Zach? Because Adam Brody left and he was the next best actor who could readily function as love interest. Emily & Richards separation happened because Ed Herman left for a while. Rory went to Yale not Harvard to allow the Stars Hollow and Grandparents story lines. There's no other reasons than that..plain necessity not character driven. The characters were twisted to make the story changes fit! Not the other way around as it should be to allow character driven outcomes. And we know that because ASP flat out said so in multiple interviews back then as to why stories went the way they did. So whyyyy are people arguing and judging fictional characters by actions that never properly developed nor were even meant to happen but were just fixes and rewrites? Truth is we never saw the story or even the characters ASP envisioned in the beginning but altered versions that are not even close to being developed organically. Literally every season one or more big story lines had to be altered due to cast changes and the characters and behaviours were molded to make it fit... ...

Yeah I get what you're saying, but also the writers I would say did a great job and allowing the characters to grow and develop in the most organic way possible! I think most shows and movies had parts in them that end up differently than the writer first thought, but that's kinda fun though isn't it! It's a fun little almost magical world and we get to visit for a while!

Lorelai Gilmore was someone who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. She had everything given to her by her parents and she was ungrateful for it. Even after becoming a teen mom, her parents had a plan to help her succeed anyway. This character is the opposite of most motivational characters. Trying to be Rory's best friend contributed to Rory's downfall. Lorelai also misguided the audience. When she got mad at Rory for having sex with Dean, she encouraged the audience to do the same. Rory did not deserve all the criticism for her sex with Dean. That was fully consensual between adults and not the source of Rory's downfall. If it was a mistake, it is pretty much the same kind of mistake that most adults her age make.
