You nailed it right from the beginning. People gotta stop misinterpreting this politician-like double talk from these owners and brand managers. In answers to fan questions they say things like, “We’d LIKE to make that playset” which people turn into “OMG!!!They said they’re making playsets!!! 🥰” or “More civilian characters is something we’ve definitely discussed” which again becomes “WOW! ‘Brand Manager X’ over at ‘Brand X’ toys said we’re going to be getting more civilians! Can’t wait!” No, they never said that either thing was going to happen. They just left it open to interpretation and you turned into what you wanted to hear. Similarly, “I don’t NEED more of your money” doesn’t mean “I won’t accept or take more of your money”.

I am seeing some of the gnarliest cope over this wave. Folks are defending this by saying it only comes to $27 a fig if you buy the whole bundle and use discount codes. If you only want one of the figs they tell you to spend $150 up front and then sell the ones you don’t want later. I didn’t get into toy collecting to sell figs I don’t want on the second hand market and spending that much/jumping through that many hoops is insane just to get a single fig you want for slightly over retail before shipping. These same folks keep talking about how tons of people are complaining that this is gonna be the new standard price going forward and I can’t think of a single example to back that claim. Not saying there aren’t folks doing that, it’s just nowhere near the majority and I haven’t seen it personally. No reasonable person thinks this is the new normal. They’re just pissed that this specific instance is so far out of pocket.

Yeahhh I mentioned the same thing to a different KZbinr, and he basically just said "seethe and cope, sell the figures you don't want to recoup the costs". Meanwhile I'd actually be losing money if I wanted to resell below retail.

Different things cost a different amount? Yeah, okay-so, the BAF figures that were $25 should be $40 because they happen to mysteriously be McFarlane Store exclusives? And not just one figure…but the entire wave? Anyone who buys into that excuse is just welcoming the ass-reaming that’s coming. I’m glad so many people are covering this and shining a light on it, no matter what is said, because it means that price is finally a topic of contention among the entire community. Maybe it will keep the hands out of the cookie jar a few more years. Who knows.

You've made some great points, especially with the perspective that while these are only toys at the end of the day, they nonetheless are meant to bring us joy, and most of us are not very wealthy. I don't collect McFarlane figures so the price hike doesn't affect me personally. However, I agree that this isn't good news for action figure collectors in general as it has the potential that other companies will follow suit.

Its not that the figures were produced and sitting in a warehouse before Target wouldve presumably canceled. Especially because previous Target waves have come out through the year one at a time. This likely happened months ago and we are just getting some clues about it now. What probably DID happen is that Mcfarlane had already invested in the line by developing the new sculpts and everything else associated. Target was then presented with this. And they declined. Wheter it was because they didnt think it would sell, or sales of the Flashpoint wave we obviously dont know. But Mcfarlane Toys wouldve been left with hundreds of thousands invested into this wave and no buyers. Because yes, new sculpts and molds are incredibly expensive. Now they couldve made it a regular wave but maybe they didnt have confidence in it as a full retail wave? And they couldnt find another partner for a full 4 figure wave? Or they just made it a smaller run and sell it through their own store. Which is what they did. Im certainly not HAPPY that they did that and I hope it never happens again but I do think thats probably what happened. If I was Mcfarlane I wouldve just taken the loss and sell it at normal prices. Because there is no way this bad press was worth it for them.

I'm a die hard DC fan for life. I only collect McFarlane DC Multiverse because he's the one at the consumer level with the IP license. But, even a hardcore fan (and customer) like me who has his entire collection revolve around the top priority DC Multiverse figures can't justify getting this line anymore if we're going to see significant increases in price. I'm going to find something else to enjoy collecting, OR go higher end, less overall volume. DC Multiverse had the benefit of the best "bang for your buck" novelty, that was no longer shared with Hasblow after THEIR ridiculous price increases. I don't know if Todd thinks he has that kind of rep or following, but if this is anywhere in the ballpark of the norm for the future, Todd will be declaring bankruptcy...AGAIN!

I think McFarlane sewed a seed of discourse in the community with this one. Based on how many content creators are blasting this (rightfully so). Now his past actions like the most recent $30 Wonder Woman, the Batmobile fiasco, bad QC etc. etc. are all now being put under the microscope. IMO the wave of figures look derpy, reused, and overrated. Even before this McFarlane has been gasping for traction lately. Batman and Spawn 2 pack had to be the biggest toy let down of 2023 😂

I dont want to defend this mcfarlane fuckary but the only thing that makes sense is this was target/Wal-Mart/where ever exclusive and McFarlane had made half of the total order that would've went to that store when the order was cancelled and since it's half of a production run in order to recoup the production cost and profit they have to double the price but with what McFarlane said about eating the cost of a unique sculpt he will which he's now back peddling on and if this is a one time thing then you don't fuck over the customer! I think this is a result of almost every single thing released from McFarlane dc multiverse selling out in seconds since the flash movie Batmobile and I think the reason for everything selling out is McFarlane not producing as much from the factory giving the illusion how popular his figures are even tho almost everything since the flash movie has been a home run regardless of how many was produced! but ultimately this is probably a direct result of Todd McFarlane being both a genius and dumbass at the same time, and I'll say it again he's probably sabotaging the dc line because he's throwing a temper tantrum about his spawn movie because he doesn't like to be told no!

It's about the money and playing catch up. They are selling nostalgia crack, collectibles, not toys. Even if you take the word that it's exclusive, limited and rare and he doesn't want to swallow the loss of a lost deal but still wants to fill a limited run, we shall see. We will see how it goes. He may have tried to balance being charitable in the past but no longer can. If I ran a business, I would probably have a hundred reasons to raise prices and possibly one or two to be charitable, unless I cut quality and cut your accessories and have cheap packaging and use a garbage art pack to make you feel like 1 or 2 dollars really matter when I'm saving a lot more than you're getting. If I had a business, I'd love to be charitable, I'd love my product, I'd love bringing joy to others. This is probably why I do not have a business.

I came across your video and thought I’d share a few thoughts Before I start let me say that I used to be in the toy industry and around it and that I’ve also had my own online collectible toy store. And I still have friends in the business at various companies and doing various jobs in toys. So while I am not privy to exactly what’s going on here (and frankly I don’t care as I don’t collect these figures) I do have some input to share. I also lightly collect toys now (I have a 7 year old now so she takes up quite a bit of my spare coin lol). I started out collecting toys in this price ranges ages and ages ago (spawn and early animated Batman figures) and later moved to pricier 1:6 and 1:12 figures as well as collectible bots ect. 1) your logic while it makes sense as a collector, is totally off base and wrong. I’m sorry but it just is. 2) this is likely a mixture of a few things. A) costs of production against figures made, plain and simple. Anything else being said is just marketing and likely McFarlane company walking the line as a manufacturer/ toy retailer and also a company that works with larger distribution channels like Target and Walmart. Your mistake is that you think you’re reading between the lines and you are not. B) you make some Great observations about other past products, product run sizes and costs. But it’s totally off because you do not understand the toy industry or actual numbers versus marketing. 3) in order for things to make sense it’s much easier today out basics and leave you to draw your own conclusions. Costs of production. Costs of production never go down. Sorry but anyone saying otherwise sounds like a damn fool. While R&D goes down thanks to 3D printing in some cases, it’s marginal. The industry typically uses professional printers like Object versus smaller grade (except at the artist stage). And while prototyping and turn around are much faster, tooling costs do not go down. Metal tooling costs were over $100k for smaller sized tooling and that was back around 2010. Add in production costs, paints, packaging and design costs, printing and the back end costs and you end up with a total cost that’s divided by the total units produced add in a small profit and you have your wholesale price. Now keep in mind your wholesale price has to also factor in license fee’s which are dictated by the holder who gets a cut, as well as the larger distribution channels / retailers (Walmarts and Targets). They know their products and shelf space and they will keep prices in line to a soft price range. Larger companies also get a small price cut, or special exclusives to drive customers to their stores (versus online retailers). These are typically special items and costs are absorbed over the toy line. Costs are always absorbed and passed on to the consumer through various means. Does it suck? Sure, but the targets and Walmarts are not going to absorb the costs and as you said McFarlene is in business to make money. Profits are used to expand and continue as a business. Taking L’s on costs just damages your company. The trick though is to use clever marketing/ promotions and product designs to give the customer a feeling that while the costs of some stuff is being passed onto them, they are still getting a value overall. This is why you have a four pack of a toy with a collectible fifth figure if you buy them all. It is also why you may have a better “gold” line that’s limited to 3000 figures and exclusive to a store but doesn’t cost more. That is totally a bit of marketing to drive sales to the retailer and was part of the exclusive order as an incentive. Thats likely 1 special exclusive figure in every ten cases ordered and a minimum of ten cases per store (that’s an example and not a hard figure). This allows higher sales at wholesale level to cover costs and ensure that those products move for McFarlane (or other company) and they can move onto other toy lines. Unfortunately this is an ideal and not always exactly how things work. Often, a former deal will impact a future deal. Low sales or a dead product line that languishes on shelves will impact other toy lines even if it’s not by the same company. A target or Walmart isn’t going to take a bath on future marvel products across their toy shelves of as a whole the marvel brand isn’t selling (or DC). Not unless they have ample evidence to show that this one toy line is flying off the shelves. And even then, target and Walmart are not risk averse. What sells in one region may not sell across their entire stores, not without discounts. So, you can have a product line that is beloved by collectors (say 3000 to 5000 collectors) but that’s not profitable for a target or Walmart, because it’s below their threshold of what they want to gamble on for profit and dedicated store shelf space. So any assertion that a company can do one thing and it somehow means they can do another is false. Often, a toy company is doing something to keep a license and to try and keep a retailer happy, and they are getting squeezed. But they cannot just come out and say, “hey we’re getting fucked, sorry” They do some tap dancing or pass the reason off as hubris. Something like “we did a whole new mold for this one, just because we wanted to” may sound good, but it could also be that the licensee didn’t like the final figure design or they had soft response from the retailer or other issues possible in tooling costs and decided it was cheaper to redo it. As for costs, yeah, those are likely going up. Last I checked, most toys are plastic. Guess what plastic is made of? Oil. Costs go up. That’s how life is, as does FOB and other costs. Things you don’t know about that come up and you’ll never hear about: Ok so might as well share some stuff here if you’ve been reading for a bit. I don’t know Mcfarlane’s company so I can’t say for sure, but typically toy companies do not own their manufacturing plants. Most that I know have a few dedicated companies they use but they are at the whim of that company and those manufacturers are also at the mercy of their employees. Believe it or not, while China has some of the worst working conditions for employees, they have a different work culture there. Chinese new year sees manufacturing across the company grind to a halt. Most people leave their working city and head home to their families city and they stay there for many weeks. When they are back in their home city they compare their work and pay and conditions, with others who are now back home and if they hear of a different region with better work or pay or conditions, they will ditch their current employer and go to the new providence and maybe see what those companies are like based on their family or friends recommendations. This is known in the industry and most smaller toy companies avoid production right after Chinese new year as the QC goes out the window, at least until the turnover is handled and the new workers are brought up to speed. Anyways hopefully this is somewhat helpful. You want to know a cost of production for a figure it’s fairly easy. Shelf price at retailer : $25 is basically $10 to $12 wholesale - FOB which means manufacturing cost is likely somewhere around $4 to $6 depending on production size, licensing ect. It’s not rocket science. Honestly you guys should be happy that figure prices have been kept at this price point for so long. In the 90’s spawn figures were priced at $9 to $15. And a large sized creech was $25 to 30. Animated Batman was priced at $5 to $7. Fast forward 30 years and you have figured that have maybe doubled in cost when tooling as more than doubled and oil per barrel has tripled / quadrupled. The only thing that’s kept this low is the retailers. But let’s keep some perspective, retailers see people drinking $7 coffee and paying $50 for coffee mugs. They also see popular 1:6 toys online selling for $275 or more Routinely. They know and understand what the market can sell at and they know what they other toys sell at (no collector toys) and they will chase their shelf space and buyers cash for items that sell quickly without markdowns in higher quantities. McFarlane selling their products at a higher cost on their site doesn’t surprise me. I’ve recently seen multiple other companies with toy lines of similar size priced at a similar price point as well and I’ve seen people worked up about them as well. Do buy them, but beware, the times are changing either way. Either prices are rising and the company will be around to keep making these licenses or the company will lose their asses on these and they’ll move their production to something that’s profitable. There’s plenty of other licenses and collectors that will buy at this price point or higher. Anime and other items come to mind. Anyways that’s my 2 cents. Cheers

The Target thing is complete BS. McFarlane themselves in responses have said it's a limited release so the cost to produce is higher on this run. If it was a Target exclusive it would have been massive. There are a crap ton of Target stores in the US and then they would also be released in whichever stores sell Target exclusives in other countries. ToysRus in Canada for example gets G.I. Joe Classified Target exclusives to sell because we don't have Target stores. People are not using logic when they come up with excuses. McFarlane created the exclusiveness, they created the limited run, they created the reason for the price increase. Let's point the finger at the right people here folks. The way companies work when it comes to price is push, push, push and stop when the pushback is too great. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
@mommasaidpopyouout6302
@mommasaidpopyouout6302 6 ай бұрын
I don’t know that it’s complete BS. Clearly there is no proof out there about it but for the past 3 years target has had a year long gold label wave where they released one figure quarterly. We should have seen the first figure for 2024 by now if they were doing it again this year but we haven’t. Then out of the blue they drop a random wave as an exclusive. The timing lines up. Target could have pulled out before or very early into production and they couldn’t find another buyer to take the order in a quantity that would equal what target would have so they cut the production run down, made it exclusive to MTS and jacked up the price to recoup the costs they were expecting from the larger target order. Don’t take my speculation above as justification though because like most I think those prices are highway robbery. I just think there is something to us not seeing a 4th year of the years long Target BAF wave this year and this wave randomly showing up. I feel there is a correlation there.

It’s almost like Todd McFarlane is some type of idiot and bad businessman or something. Weird.

Naw didn’t came up with a reason to justify it, there’s Mcfarlane emails sent to folks reassuring the price hike. Plus I just wanted the wave. If you want it get it if you don’t you don’t.

Youre an addict. Its okay, just admit it. Thats the ONLY reason you buy his crap to begin with, let alone when Todd price gouges.

@@joeyr.cannoli my guy came in like a knight to save the comment section 😂🤣😭…that’s hella funny, guess I’m an addict because I bought this wave. I gots around 30+ figures in my entire collection, guess that makes me an addict 🤷🏽‍♂️. Never said that I’ll buy everything Mcfarlane releases, just said I hella like this wave so I bought it. You hella weird. Bet you call the police manager when someone says something you don’t like.
