As a professional yapper, i can confirm that literally all of this is true. I make the exact kinds of videos Garbaj is talking about here. I play a game with the idea of making a video on it in mind, and I if I like it, I make a list of things I like about it, and if I don't, I do the opposite. Usually I'm one of those KZbinrs who try and come off as genuine, but often I think that I lose that somewhere along the script writing process. I can confirm that the main reason I make these videos is for the views and watchtime that come along with them, as that's the only thing I've found to work for me on youtube. Id say that most people who make these types of review videos don't actually feel even half as strongly about something as they portray.

Kinda funny that you mention Blametruth. I was about to write about how 12 years ago (or more), there was basically like an epidemic on youtube of specifically COD commentators who CONSTANTLY complained about COD, and at the same time complained about other shooters and how they "wont overtake COD". It eventually evolved into people complaining about everything, their lives, money, etc. I cant say how things are now, but back then I believe most of these professional complainers were genuine. But a lot of them also only uploaded COD content, because that was the only thing that gave them views and money. Sometimes it feels unreal seeing the people that came out of that COD Machinima scene and what they are doing today.

I see this with almost every content creator, not just in gaming. Always exaggerating things, events, always about the hype. That’s why I would never be a content creator, the pressure to stay relevant can force you to do that kind of thing. The sad thing is that it works, most viewers keep coming back for more nonsense. But when you, as a spectator, start to see these patterns and clickbaits, you get fed up very quickly. It becomes very easy to spot the truly good content creators from the bad ones.

For Path of Exile you can be hyped to the max (trailes and announcements for a new leagues brings me joy in life, no joke - not many, if any, AAA product can do this), but you can still lose you soul and joy when you enter the toxic territory of PoE subreddit. Visit it too much and you can even stop enjoying the game - even if objectively it's in a good state and new league delivered. Years ago it was very pro-PoE subred created by big boss himself (Chris Wilson) but after one of the leagues (Lake of Kalandra) that did so much damage it caused complete 180* turnaround and caused the devs (and any GGG-related people) to escape and avoid it like a plague. I have seen enough people complain about a game all the time, for example, let's take BetaSalvation's "review" of the Roblox roguelike "Decaying Winter", in the review, BetaSalvation basically complained about Decaying Winter being inspired by other games, the game's difficulty with absurd lines like "I don't get why sledgehammer scavs are so tough" while if you take ONE look at the sledgehammer scavs in Decaying Winter, you can see they have protective vests that somewhat protect their chests, motorcycle helmets that protect their head and a sledgehammer to do tons of damage, if you don't like a roguelike for it's difficulty, don't play the game, not to mention BetaSalvation put something COMPLETELY unrelated to the game which was making the game's creator, Archeximus look like a.... Y'know, and it wasn't even good proof, it was just screenshots taken out of context

I'm not professional per say but i do find myself complaining a lot with most games i play. I like to point out small nitpicks or complain about design choices and certain issues, yet how much i complain about a game doesn't usually determine whether or not i actually like it. There are many things i dislike about elden ring, from optimization issues, to limited controls, not particularly appealing art style, various gameplay design choices etc. but in the end i still enjoyed the game, just that it was no masterpiece. On the opposite end of the spectrum there's games like Skyrim, which despite all the factual design issues and bugs in every aspect of the game, i complain very little about it as i've accepted the issues. Or i mod the issues out.

While I'm all about everyone getting their bag, I do tend to draw issue with the professional complainers of the world. Since you mentioned BT, I will admit he can have some witty remarks with the character he plays, but my issue stems from how his extremely reductive points can quickly be taken literally by his audience. As an example, there was a controversy about AI bots apparently flooding Modern Warfare III, and he was citing things as evidence that he (or his character) believed to be bullet-proof evidence of his claims. Players behaving like bots and killcams that purpoertedly showed glitchy AI behaviour. It took me 5 minutes to dig deeper and debunk things because BT was only looking at things from a surface-level. Yes, listening to rant content can be cathartic and is ostensibly content junk food, but it does strike a nerve with how quickly and loudly he'll go about spreading information which can be effortlessly challenged because his approach to sharing information can be so reductive and surface-level. So, as a whole, not a fan of the guy

Anything after that is either "That's it, I'm done" or "Call of Duty devs want to MURDER YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY in real life" with the occasional "give credit where credit's due" to gain credibility, the character became too exaggerated, it's no longer believable.

I used to spin around in an endless circle of watching these kind of videos about balance patches and how "the developers are willingly destroying their own game" and complaining myself about those same things. Only when I pulled the plug on this doom spiral I realized that I was hurting myself and my enjoyment of said games. Costructive criticism is important for the industry and the developers. Criticism for the sake of criticism (or worse, for the sake of drama or views) makes even the most polished, most balanced game seem unfun and unplayable.

idk ... I see it mostly as real intersection across the society ... there is not a single thing all of society would 100% agree on and like ... not unless youre in authoritarian society where everyone is under command and their preferences are dictated. And yes there are things more controversial than others and some ppl are less open ... but unless you see an agenda pattern, Id say its just someone being vocal about their preferences. Not every game can be Disco Elysium where ideologically it caters towards almost every major ideology and that's fine since there is difference between a bad game and game not meant for everyone ... sadly most rating systems are linear and don't take this into account and I feel like that's where the problem lies;

Good question. I was about to mention AVGN and the whole online reviewer space from 2007 to around 2013, but given how much that was a played up character and skit show, I'm not sure it does count. At some point there's a line between "complainer" and "comedy act", and I would say AVGN and the like falls on the "comedy act" side of that.

@@dominiccasts I agree. I wasn’t 100% sure because the AVGN is obviously a skit character and the things he complains about or critiques are very understandable. The best way to enjoy something for yourself irrespective of the social or political views of the product is to stop listening to these grifters in the first place.
