Reuters story today says that the FAA may issue a launch license in October, assuming everything else is also ready. So more than 2 weeks according to the FAA.

Ship 26 is the one without fins right? If that's the orbital refueling tanker, that is the key to going to the Moon and to Mars. It doesn't need re-entry, so that's one less thing to go wrong, seems like a low complication option for the next launch.
@tianshee

But it would needs to land on Earth for refueling... Is it orbit-to-orbit only? To avoid wasting ∆V moving flaps and heat shield around?

Ship 26: it's place in the starship prototype development could be a simplified test vehicle intended to take it to orbit, ie; and the hierarchy of goals, making it into orbit is one of the primary.

What do licenses look like for. Multiple launches and tank launches etc on the same day. Especially if something small doesn’t go according to exsact Nasa license layout plans. I reckon for SpaceX they’re going to have to change their methods of making out these rulings for SpaceX multiple launches on the same day. Just some thoughts for Nasa for the future.

No, it was damage from foam insulation coming off the main tank that impacted the leading edge of the one of the wings of the obiter. That led to Columbia's demise.

Is there some compelling reason they can't construct the FTS systems to be armable by a person on the ShIp QD arm and the top of the OLM? Does the point of arming need to be near the center of each vehicle?
@CavingMonkey
@CavingMonkey Жыл бұрын
Because placing it at the bottom of the ship would only punch a hole in the oxygen tank and might not instigate the rapid destruction of the ship. The FTS needs to be placed by the common bulkhead, by the methane tank and will (or should) mix the fuel and oxidizer and then ignition.
@disorganizedorg
@disorganizedorg Жыл бұрын
@@CavingMonkey Yes, the charges need to be placed as you describe. But does the control of the arming circuit need to be there too, or can they run a presumably armored cable to a more convenient location?
@jamescobban857
@jamescobban857 Жыл бұрын
@@CavingMonkey "On rockets containing hypergolic propellants, the common bulkhead of the rocket's tanks is ruptured to ensure the toxic propellants mix and combust as much as possible when flight is terminated. On rockets fueled by cryogenic propellants, the tanks are perforated from the side to prevent excessive mixing and combustion of propellants,[22] as an FTS is not allowed to detonate propellants and cause a violent explosion." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_safety Note that, quite obviously, the FTS on IFT1 did NOT cause immediate mixing of the fuel and oxidizer. The whole point of this issue is that the FTS system *did not work*, in that the vehicle continued to operate for over 30 seconds, creating the risk of a range violation. To continue with the wikipedia quotes "In some cases involving liquid-fueled rockets, shutting down the engines[30] is sufficient to ensure flight safety." This kind of termination could obviously be managed from the QDs. I believe that Starship is using a detonation cord. Is it possible that as a measure to ensure that the FTS cannot even theoretically be triggered before launch the blasting cap is not installed until the last moment? "[PETN] is a secondary explosive, meaning it is more difficult to detonate than primary explosives, so dropping or igniting it will typically not cause an explosion (at standard atmospheric pressure it is difficult to ignite and burns vigorously), but is more sensitive to shock and friction than other secondary explosives such as TNT or tetryl." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentaerythritol_tetranitrate

This is what thought as well, and while I doubt it, could be a test of propellant fueling with S28 in orbit?
@disorganizedorg
@disorganizedorg Жыл бұрын
Assuming that IFT-2 makes it past staging (very possible) and the booster makes its planned soft landing in the Gulf (much less likely) that suggests that the mishap investigation regarding ship reentry would not preclude issuing a license for IFT-3 if the plan was to launch a tanker prototype into a stable orbit. Inserting such a test in the schedule allows them to work on slowly developing their launch cadence and ironing out bugs in pad turnaround.

For a government bureaucracy the FAA is operating at lightning speed. I know that when I personally am asked for a decision even if I have already made up my mind I will lean back in my chair, pretend to think about it for a while, and only then give my response.

Why is FAA involved in Starship design? The FAA's mission is to regulate the safety of civil aviation and aircraft not to be involved in Rocket design. They are involved in the design of airplanes not rockets. In the aircraft area they are well known for making it so difficult to get regulatory approval for small planes that most small aircraft are designs that predate the implementation of the FAA like 80 years ago. Hardly any new small aircraft have been implemented since then. I don't know how they rationalize involvement in Rocket design. I don' t see them involved in Cape Canaveral! Maybe Musk should go to a more welcoming country like maybe Australia.

There is NO reason to unstack the booster and ship when testing the Deluge system. It is designed to work with the ship there
@Wheatty
@Wheatty Жыл бұрын
normally the engines would be firing that water back down and converting most of it to steam. With no engines firing you’re blasting water into the raptors for no reason. I think they could still test without a destack and just not run the deluge system at full power
@ale131296

Well, no one said they'd destack it for that. We mentioned that they need to remove the rocket if they want to test the cryogenic tank farm not the water deluge system.
