In fairness I recall the opposite being a problem when airbags were first introduced. To allow emergency services to gain access to vehicles damaged in an accident, whenever the airbags deployed it would automatically unlock all the doors of the car. The problem came when car theives became aware of this feature. Many high end vehicles were being stolen with the simple procedure of just firmly hitting the front bumper. This was enough to cause the airbags to deploy and the doors automatically unlocked. With a swift swipe of a knife, the airbag could be cut to get it out of the way. A quick bit of hotwiring and the car was gone. The common sense solution to this would have been to dissable the airbag system when the ignition was turned off. Seems common sense doesn't always prevail.

Even cars from the 80's, 90,s and the early 2000's with central looking and power windows all what you needed to do was just pull the inside door lever to opening position the door and the car door would automatically unlock and open, and even without power you still couldn't fully lock yourself inside those era cars. And if the built in rear door child locks were activated you still could get in through the front doors to try and get kids out of the car. But cars back them also had a key lock to unlock the front doors also well to you still could unlock them with out any power even with the battery fully disconnected unlike newer modern cars today with only having keyless entry.

Thanks for sharing this one Geoff. It's a great relief to have everyone survive a fire. It's awful that it seems to be so frequent for JLR products. Electrically dead-locked doors are ridiculous - what is going on with modern car design?! It's a good idea for everyone to be prepared, although you don't need a golf club. Any car with a spare tyre has what you need to break a window. The wheel brace or jack lever, will make short work of most side windows. (Perhaps not a Cybertruck window though). There are specialised window breaking tools that will also do it much more easily.

I have a Jaguar XJ diesel and it nearly went on fire a couple of months ago after a fuel line came off the fuel filter, whilst I was driving, covering the outside of the car and the whole engine bay in diesel by the time I realised what had happened and brought the car to a stop. Smoke started to pour from the engine bay and thought it was going to catch fire and burn out!! But, fortunately the diesel didn't ignite, so eventually the smoke came to nothing and eventually after 30 mins the issue had passed. A local mechanic came, as I had called the AA, but by that time I had found a fuel line off from the fuel filter. I tried to replace it but it wouldn't clip on securely? I pointed the issue to the mechanic and he said, oh yes this is a common problem as the clips aren't always reset correctly when they are removed during the fuel filter replacement. I said I had just had the car go through a major service, timing chain replaced, so the fuel filter assy was removed to gain access etc. Credit to the service garage, as I went back and explained the situation, so they cleaned the engine bay and paid for the lost diesel!! But, if the car had gone up in flames then the problem of the incorrectly fitted fuel line hose clip would not have been picked up. So maybe this could be worth checking after a fuel filter has been replaced by a garage.

A couple of notes on this. First, you should have a glass breaker on your key ring in case you need to break a side window to escape. Note: This only works with tempered safety glass (see below) Second and more concerning: There is a trend among car manufacturers to use laminated glass in the side windows instead of tempered safety glass. These windows will NOT shatter and allow escape. In fact first responders now need to carry a special powered shears to cut through windows to perform rescues.

I am old enough to remember a time when we didn't have to worry about all this security on cars and homes, we had more trust and less crime overall, people looked out for each other and the only time we had our door locked was at night when asleep, now, we have to secure virtually everything and we've become too reliant on electronics (especially in cars)for security and general operation of the vehicle. And yes, times were BETTER then! I was born in '68 and had a great youth. As time went on I saw a decline in standards of just about everything and it makes me feel sad and angry at the same time. Why do people allow standards to fall and allow our society to be much worse than it was and hearing people say, oh that's just how it is, you can't do anything about it! It makes me cringe, there's so much going wrong now, people feel paralysed, and don't know where to start to create change for the better, this includes myself! Unfortunately I know this has been done deliberately, to demoralise people, make them apathetic to what's going on around them. Problem - Reaction - Solution and here's where we are now. Increased crime calls for increased security measures but also increased risks when things go wrong due to decreased quality standards!

Geoff, I often hear EVangelists repeatedly say that statistically, EV’s catch fire way less than ICE (let’s ignore hybrids for the time being). Is this still true, given the seemingly endless supply of EV fires we see these days? OR, is it just that when an ICE catches fire it only tends to burn out the one car, rather than take out the whole car park / transport ship / dealership, and so doesn’t make the news as readily as the EV’s? It would be good to separate out petrol & diesel figures too I think.
@geoffas2 ай бұрын
They're playing with statistics. There are far more ICEs than EVs on the roads ;-)
@TheLDunn12 ай бұрын
@@geoffas yeah, but it would be good to see the stats behind them. I’m sure the outright number of ICE’s catching fire are larger than EV’s, as you say, due to there being a much larger number of ICE’s on the road AND the average age of ICE’s being that much older. However, it would be interesting to see the figures and show the figures as a ‘per ice’ & ‘per EV’ to compare the two (or 3 if you split out petrol & diesel)

Uncapping one end revealed a blade for cutting seatbelts, the other end had a spring activated spike that you pushed against window glass activating a percussive action of the spike ( I remember something similar to the latter from my engineering days - a spring activated centre-punch). Although I'm a pensioner and, in my old age, wary about my personal safety (yet still ride a motorcycle !?) I purchased a couple of these advertised devices, one for carrying in my car and one for my son's car. I didn't expect to end up in a river, but as I now have a hybrid car, and many pensioner driving mishaps seem to involve cars with auto gearboxes, thought I'd be full of regret (understatement !) if I didn't have the window breaker in my car, and I ended up under water ! Looking on-line I see many variations of window-breaker are marketted. When I made my purchase it hadn't occurred to me rescueing someone from a burning car , but such occurrences seem to be quite common these days , so glad I may be able to assist someone in such a predicerment (N.B. I don't play golf !!!).

Obviously the best thing to do in a modern car if you have any issues is to immediately open all of the windows, and if you need to get out of the car to check anything, leave your door open. If you have children in the back seats, open one of the back doors as well. Also, if you have to get out of your car for any reason at all, make sure you don't leave your children inside, especially toddlers in baby seats.

The thing is that because cars need to be "cheaper" the cut some costs at other parts. Tesla is doing the same with the front sensors. Cutting some costs is more and more happening to the expense of safety. Little smaller brakepads, little thinner wires of putting a little more power on a single wire and so on. The older cars not so much and yes they can catch fire. It the numbers that count these days and not the quality of the car.

Yes F/M/S, this weight/cost-saving vehicle design is creating major hazards, but hey, profit is more important than human lives (not !) ! I have a Toyota hybrid that is less than two years old - it didn't come with a jack or wheelnut brace, just one of those (bad idea) aerosol liquids and a small electric pump. (I have purchased both items now though) but also have a window breaking/seat belt cutting devices that I have in my car's centre console storeage).

I heard that if you're going to break a car door window the rear door windows aren't as strong as the front door windows. Can anyone confirm or debunk that?

With central locking you should expect it will activate and trap you and your family in the event of fire or entering water. You should invest £5 in a pocket sized window breaker ( they usually also have a seat belt slicer).

Im guessing this is to do with either blocked DPFs or regens taking place when at slow speeds and the under bonnet temperature is causing a fire. This is a recall worthy thing surely, if only to program an engine non start into the system when the dpf is saturated. This is what happened at Luton maybe?. Can we just take a moment, before we blame the Land Rover, just think of the mentality of the mother who has left her children locked in the car unattended with the windows shut while she was shopping. If there was an engine stop light or dpf blocked light on the dash, with her mentality, how confident are we that shes not gonna ignore it and keep driving?

I think ALL cars should carry a fire extinguisher. It should be part of the MOT inspection. They are cheep enough. Mine was £13 for a 1kg.

The sad fact is that if that had been in America John would receive a bill for breaking the window!

A question. Could the 12v battery be lithium ion? They are using lithium for ordinary car batteries, not just hybrid and EE's?
