I've got some more thoughts on 4K and what movies certain studios and boutique labels decide gets it. Does Box Office have anything to do with it? Does it really cost too much? Let's talk about it.

Ever since 4ks came out I've been obsessed with 4k home viewing, 4ks is simply the ultimate best way to watch movies. The picture is 10 times sharper with Dolby Vision and the audio Dolby Atmos brings the film more to life, Blu-rays are second best but 4k is the ultimate way to watch movies at home 👊👊📽

That all depends on what films you watch as most of the films i like are 80's 90's and 4k isn't all that impressive tlike the modern films made today as old upscaled films are not true 4k and isn't that much difference from standard blu ray apart from a slight upgrade in colour and finer grain with a slight brightness increase . As for the price your paying the same amount of money for an old up scale film compared to a proper 4k film made today.

Cereal at Midnight has done countless videos on this subject and interviewed many people who work at studios and boutique labels. It's very simple. 4k transfers are VERY expensive and it is very risky. If they don't think it's going to sell then they aren't going to risk it. 4ks are only 10-15% of sales so it is very risky.

Yup. A little research goes a long way. This dude doesn't pay attention to anything insiders have to say and he makes a big deal out of the most minor inconveniences to stir up controversy and get more attention. The incessant complaining and misinformation purposely handed out only for his benefit has become extremely tiresome. Hopefully more people catch on to how lame it actually is.

There's no one left at the studios who even have any idea what is in their catalog. They've all been replaced by younger corporate bean counters who know nothing about film or appealing to film fans. Even the people who knew dvd sales metrics are long gone now. That's why the boutique labels are cleaning their clocks.

Part of the reason they sell out is because of resellers buying up multiple copies solely for the sake of reselling them, which is inflated demand. And part of the reason why they don't sell more has to do with limited resources making economies of scale a challenge. There's hundreds and hundreds of movies out there but not but so many manufacturers to go around.

Great video Ken! Really enjoyed this one. I do agree the major studios could absolutely step up more on the 4K front if they really wanted to... and they could be making a killing if they handled it right (with promotional/ad campaigns, etc.). I tend to think they often just have people working there/running the show who don't know what they're doing... or at least, don't really have the kind of experience needed to be dealing with film distribution on home media.

I'm not the type of person who needs every movie on 4k, yeah, there are some movies that I think deserve the 4K treatment (like all of Christopher Nolan's movies) but for the most part, I'm fine with just Blu Ray, 1080p is good enough for me. I will say this though, I will most likely get the 4K if it comes with a Blu Ray transfer that's exactly the same as the 4K disc (just downscaled to Blu Ray) and is exclusive to the 4K package (like most of Shout Factory's 4Ks)

I mean DVD is 27 years old, with a 480p resolution, streaming, blu-ray, anything looks better than dvd Blu-Ray is 17 years old, 1080p resolution, which still looks good, but the 4K resolution looks way better and has been around for 10 years?? and the 4K Blu-Ray is 8 years old. I get it that DVD is still the best selling format, but feels weird that we keep relying on such old technologies and resolutions lol

In a perfect world every movie would get a 4K release, but not every movie needs it. I wouldn’t complain if everything had a 4K release. Haha What I hate more, which you have mentioned on various occasions including in this video, is when studios release a standard Blu-ray version and then a few months later, they announced the 4K version. It makes me a little apprehensive at times in regards to purchasing certain movies when they release because part of me is wondering if I just wait, I can pick up the 4K version later on down the line.

It does cost more time, money, and resources. Some of the worst 4K disc releases out there are because the people involved took the lazy route as to how they handled the encode.

I understand it costs a percentage more for 4k disc production but they charge a little more for that version to make up the cost. 4k movies, even though it's a smaller percentage being purchased, gives prestige to a movie and gives consumers more choices. For me, if a movie I have to have is available on all formats, I'm buying 4k. If it's not, sometimes I just wait. I'm not the only one, so that means some sales are lost due to their decision for bluray only.

The market has definitely changed over the last few years it’s more a collectors market, with emergence of more boutique labels who are doing restorations the major studio releases will get more of a pick-up recent examples Barbie and Oppenheimer which sold to a larger market. The bigger studios look at whether there is a large enough market for a 4k. I understand that an Atmos mix engineer can ramp costs for sound up to $10,000 for a theatrical physical media mix for just one film. Talking to a studio insider may reveal what strategy is used, I don’t believe it’s a random as you believe.

Exactly. There's variability in the decisions because there's variability in the market for 4K - our interest in it may be through the roof bit the numbers just aren't prominent enough to make the decision to go for it obvious for every business exec involved for every film. 4K licensing is literally separate and more expensive, not to mention the technical requirements of encoding something to disc *properly* if you want it done right.

In my opinion it's extremely simple, 4K is the last real physical format we really need with most of the quality so high that the studious should put EVERYTHING on 4K if the source material allows for it and once it's done call it a day movie preserved, money earned and really don't have to do anything more with it ever again should the studio choose not to.
@chrisjfox8715
@chrisjfox8715 27 күн бұрын
The market the boutique labels caters to is far more inclined to purchase obscure films and pay top dollar for them than the mainstream audiences that studios have to consider/think vicariously through. On top of VS releases being expensive (2 of which I own, with another couple on the way), they charge like $1000 for a subscription and there's people that pay it. Joe Schmo with a Netflix account that just so happens to love John Wick or Barbie may or may not be so inclined to pay $30 to buy Challengers. Some people will yes, but the investment in the 4K licensing and *proper* HDR encoding is at best a wait-and-see...from the standpoint of a studio exec. Some studios go for it and some don't because interest in 4K physical straddles the fence between having a lot of potential yet being a bit too niche for its own good. Some studios look at the numbers and just don't see a homerun so they get selective.

@@midlevelmedia why do it at all if not on 4k? Is that a serious question? I remember Arrow doing Robocop in blu, then the crying and gnashing of teeth when they announced the 4K. This guy waited and didn’t have to double dip. The trick is figuring out which ones will get those later releases and those you can safely buy on blu knowing the chances of a 4K are almost nothing. Ken, great video. Just some questions loosely related. 1. Why has there not been an “affordable” 4k player been available? I get that the disc sizes are bigger and Atmos and Dolby Vision decoders,I would assume, aren’t cheap. I don’t begin to understand the inner workings of the players. But, I know that blu-ray players have become extremely affordable. I appreciate the Magnatar and Reavon players, but those are way out of my price range. I do currently have an X800 Sony 4k player, but it’s getting older and I would love to have a “fresh” player for my medium sized collection of 4k’s. 2. What exactly goes into a restoration? Is it time consuming or is it a speedy process? Are blank 4k discs expensive? Surely the big studios get a cut rate deal on wholesale discs. 3. Why do studios hold on to titles if they’re not going to do anything with them? Hy not license out your whole catalog to whoever wants them and just sit back and watch the cash roll in?

Since that you said that, "Challengers", is an MGM film, maybe there will be a Criterion Collection edition of it. Maybe also a Criterion Collection edition of, "American Fiction." The Criterion Collection did release some of the Amazon Prime Video films recently including, "Sound of Metal", and, "One Night in Miami", as well as, "Nanny."

There are so many thoughts on this topic that I don't know what to say really. I think people are now in the habit of staying home because of the pandemic years. And the fact that theaters are so expensive and there isn't a long wait for the home media release like there used to be makes things easier to see at home. Therefore I think many things should be in 4k. But, also most current movies are awful.

My strategy has been the same since I first went 4K back in July 2016 and since then I will only purchase new titles on 4K only. I have no problem purchasing catalog titles on Blu-ray but not new releases. If there is no 4K release then I skip the Blu-ray and just purchase it on digital when on sale of $9.99 or less which is always in 4K and just roll with that until/if a 4K Blu-ray is released and if not then no big deal.

Rich people corporate math is the problem. It's not their money they are losing, they just like the power and promise investors the world to get their money. And it works! When it doesn't, they get their golden parachutes. They fail to realize $1 profit is better than 100s of millions in loses every year.

Go to any store that sells entertainment products where you can sell or trade. Probably like 80% of their products is DVDs and CDs, even vinyl. The shelves for Blu Ray and 4K are very minimal. These stores know what sells and DVDs are still in demand.

Greed. It's always greed. Margins are better on Blu-rays and DVDs because they're cheaper to make, they're priced close to 4Ks, and more people are buying them than 4Ks. To the studio execs, they just take the easy money and make their quota for the year, because they don't know if they're going to be employed for another year, so who cares about the long term.

Killers of the Flower Moon is one I’d like to see but it doesn’t look like that’s ever going to happen. I mean I’m not paying for AppleTV just to watch this movie. I like to physically hold my movie. I’m old school. And when your 4K tv is calibrated correctly, you will see a world of difference between 4K and HD.

Streaming services are apprehensive to release their films/shows on physical because they don't want to cannibalize their streaming subs. Yes, we provide a market for them to release physical to that will either stream also or won't stream regardless, but they'll nonetheless be touchy about it because it's risky for them to choose which titles of theirs are worth the effort. In their mind... If they blindly release nearly everything on physical also, then they run the risk of people getting hip to the idea of not having to bother subscribing. If they only release their most popular movies/shows on physical, same concern. Which only leaves them the options of either not bothering at all, or being incredibly selective about which ones deserve the effort. Hence with the latter, the sweet spot amongst all the concerns above is to only release a handful of mid-popular things...if for no other reason than the cold hard fact that people willing to sub far outnumbers those of us willing to buy a disc.

It takes a lot of money to remaster a film. Even for Blu-ray. It's a expensive and time intensive process. This is why I think some movies will never get a 4K release. Just the cost of remastering in 4K and you have to remember that studios set aside budgets for what movies will be released in Blu-ray or 4K. There are still movies that are on DVD that are not on Blu-ray so not every movie gets that. There are movies that are VHS 📼 only to this day. No DVD or Blu-ray release.

Sometimes a bluray is so good that a 4k just isn't nessesary. My bootleg of True Lies on bluray was so good that I almost didn't buy the 4k. But I did and the difference was slight. The problem was that the bluray rollout was hit and miss. And a lot of people thought that DVD was good enough. But while 4k is a must for really huge releases for a lot of legacy stuff bluray is fine. I would be happy if a lot of titles (Xena, Buffy the Vampire slayer) were simply released on bluray.I understand that that can't happen sometimes because of the problem with special effects. But a lot of times bluray will be enough

DVDs should have been phased out as soon as the first 4Ks became available. This would have allowed for just two formats to co-exist. Now there are three formats available in addition to streaming making 4K a niche product. I still don't understand why people are still buying DVDs.

Sure, in an ideal world everything should come to 4k. But we all know physical media is giving its last breaths. So I think more asthetic driven films should get 4k. For instance, I love "All about eve". But is it a film thar screams 4k? Do we need it on 4k? No, it's a dialogue driven film and the blu ray is more than enough.

The reason why 4ks are Behind the DVDs & bluray's on the sales charts. Is bc the studios & small labels have not surported the 4k or the bluray format like they did with the DVD format. And if the studios & the small labels would have surported the 4k & bluray format. By now we would only have blurays & 4k format in 2024 & DVDs would have been phase out by now most likely. And the whole situation with what films gets a bluray only releaes & no 4k releaes. The best way to fix that is not to release everything on 4k. But the studios should ask the customers in a weekly poll vote. And ask would you surport & buy this film on 4k or just release the film on bluray only. By doing it this way the studios would know if a film has enough surport to releaes it on 4k & not be losing money on a film that got a 4k releaes that nobody hardly bought. Bc not every film needs a 4k releaes. But as long the film gets a good bluray releaes. This would help the studios pick & choose witch titles would sell & witch titles would not sell well enough to be released on 4k but be released on bluray

My overall opinion remains the same as it has for some time. 4k restorations are more important than actual 4k disc releases. However, if they are gonna do a 4k restoration, then it silly not to put it on 4k disc for collectors that want that full experience. Fire in the Sky is the prefect example. Amazing looking blu-ray of a 4k restoration that didn't get a 4k disc. Makes no sense...and always put out both 4k and blu-ray together!

Imaginary is getting a 4k release but only in Italy and Eagle Pictures releasing it. Whet it comes to other stuff you pointed out I think it is all fault of streaming. Studios like Disney, Amazon/MGM, Apple invested millions in their streaming infrastructure and they all want best possible quality to be only available via their shitty streaming services which is ofc very disappointing.

I would probably buy the 4K+Blu-rays more if they were closer in price to the blu-rays, for me blu-rays still win out with quality / price. Would I love to see everything come out in 4K, probably, but blu-ray is a fine enough format for me with a 40 inch 4K TV (and one without any great sound features) that I will generally be sticking with that. If I like a film, I am happy to go with the DVD if there is no blu-ray or 4K (or even VHS). Only moan about the blu-rays being regions, really wish they would bring it out in region free especially if it is a film that is unlikely to ever be picked up by a US (or vica versa) European, why limit it to a single market when it probably will never get a release in another region anyway Isn't unedited / rambling videos the new format for youtube now, though saying that, I have always released my youtube videos as unedited as possible, hate all the fast cutting retention style stuff.
